Drinking Very Little Formula

Hi, my 8 month old does not like formula. I breastfeed for about 2 months. When I started her on formula, (similac) she did not like it & would rather drink water. I thought she would out grow this but up until this day, she hates it. She usually gets 4 bottles a day & I'm lucky if she drinks 4 ounces from each bottle. She is a great eater & loves water. She usually just drinks 2 or 3 ounces of the formula at each feeding which I find too little. Her doc says it's okay & to give her yogurt which replaces 2 bottles. I tried to change her formula but that did not work. Does anyone else have this probelm?

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

I am with you. My daughter does't like formula or regular milk. However she is still nursing about three to four times a day. I just bought last night some rice milk to see if she would take that & no she doesn't like it. Have you tried to warm up the milk in the microwave for a few seconds to see if maybe she likes it warm? My daughter doesn't like it warmed up. I'm thinking of trying soy milk or almond milk. But she loves yogurt & I'm ok with her supplementing with that. But I'm worried about my daughter because she's only in the 13th percentile for her weight & 30 percentile for her height. Let me know how you make out. If I can think of anything else I'll let you know.
Best of luck,
M.

If the doctor says it's fine, then I'd let it be. Give her the best yogurt you can with the least amount of sugar. I buy plain Dannon (good cultures in it) and mix in a little jam - I guess jelly would be what she'd need.

Yogurt, cheese, etc. will give her what she needs. As long as doc is not concerned, you
should not be. She will grow up to be a healthy little girl.

I would definitely cut out the water. Can you give her yogurt like yo baby or yogurt with fruit?

Do not give her water. Babies should not have water and do not need it. It is filling her up and giving her ZERO nutrition. Formula is not a drink for babies, it is their main food. Water is not recommended for babies. If you're saying that you started giving her water at 2 months, this was a mistake. I would cut out the water, today. It's okay to give it at a year, when their primary nutrition comes from food, but babies don't need supplemental "drinks." Your doctor should have advised you that water serves no benefit to your baby and can actually be detrimental. If she's eating solids and not having much formula, I'd cut out the solids too. Yogurt can replace milk when they are over a year, but formula is not a serving of dairy for a baby. Yogurt or food will not give your baby the nutrients that she needs, which are in her formula.
