Dress up Dolls for My Toddler

My mom had a Ginny Doll when she was little and then I had one when I was little. We had a bunch of different outfits that we'd dress the dolls up in. Recently my 2 year old daughter has been wanting to play with them. I love this! However, both dolls have seen better days and some of the clothes are from when my mom as a little girl back in the early 50s and are in seriously bad shape. I would love to get my daugher her own Ginny doll with some fun clothes but I don't think they sell them anymore. Can anyone tell me where I might find something similar? I don't do any of the Barbie/Bratz dolls as I don't like the way they dress and the messages they send. I'm looking for something sweet and wholesome! :)

What can I do next?

My daughter is getting Only Hearts Club dolls this Christmas - they are a good wholesome Barbie alternative! Also, my mom-in-law got her a Skipper doll, which I tolerated since Skipper has much more realistic proportions and more modest clothes.

Another idea is magnetic dress-up dolls (Melissa and Doug make a nice set) - they are easy for little ones to manipulate since man doll clothes require good fine motor skills.

Hope that helps!

I agree with the other about the New Generation dolls at Target. The sell clothes and accessories to go with them. My daughter has a couple of these and she loves them. To me they are prettier than the American Girls dolls. If you really want an Am Girl doll check ebay. They have some used ones on there in excellent condition for a fraction of the catalog price.

Good luck!

Hello! Have you looked at "Groovy Girls"? They are well-made by the Manhatten Toy Company and look like normal girls with normal clothes, They are soft dolls with clothes you can change out via simple hook and loop tape closures, perfect for small hands. If you want to go all out, there are accessories and furniture for them as well. Some of them are faries etc, but they really started out as regular girls, and they even have a brownie troupe. Hope this helps!
Good luck :)

I don't know about the Ginny dolls, but what about the wanna-be American Girl type dolls sold at Target?

$31.99

There are several different dolls, each with a name and a story that goes with them. There are a lot of different clothes you can get for them, also.

They are 18" tall....

The basic doll, without a story or all the accessories, is $22.99 .....

There is a Build A Bear store in the Chandler Mall (and maybe others in the area). My daughters loved going there, choosing their own animals, and an outfit for them. (Build A Bear makes it a whole experience...they would let your daughter choose how firm she wants her animal stuffed, and she puts in a heart and sometimes they have them blow kisses in there.) They are far easier to dress than any other doll, so would be easier for your 2 year old to do it herself.

A bonus...some dollar stores carry knock-off clothes that fit! I know it's not the same as a doll, but almost and their clothing is more modest as well.
