Good morning- I figured that I could sort through 1000 online reviews or just ask the experts...

I am having our second child in April and our older will turn 4 in May. Double stroller... worth it? Waste of money?

If you have one that you recommend, please share. If you have one you don't like, please share that too!

This is a topic of debate in my house right now, so we'll both be interested in hearing what you have to say!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the feedback! We are the walking/jogging types- walk the neighborhood every night until it's too cold to do so, walk to the town library, town festivals, etc. We also travel a lot (day trips, etc), but as several of you mentioned my 4 yr old won't want to be "strolled" for much longer. I have several infant carriers (loved them) from my son, so maybe we'll do an umbrella stroller to keep in the car in case the "big boy" gets tired and just use what we have!

My husband will thank you... as I was about to order a $500 stroller.

I would 100% say the City Mini double. I know that you have a 4 year old, but sometimes just to get errands done and just to go for a walk it is nice to have them both sitting and relaxing.
I know everyone says.. "Oh 4 is too old to sit in a stroller"... well, you know what, I am 32 and if someone offered to push me in a stroller, I would!

We bought a sit and stand with #1 & #2. Now #2 and #3 use it. We love it. I love that the older child can hop on and off with ease. All 3 kids will ride it sometimes (kids are 1, 3, and 6).

I have a big almost 4 year old and a 9 month old. I agonized for months before #2 was bornm, as to which double stroller to get, especially because of the weight maximums for a lot of strollers, some only go up to 40 lbs/seat, which my older was at already, plus we were limited also because we had a Chicco infant carrier, and needed something with an adapter for it. We finally settled between the BOB duallie and the City mini baby jogger. The BOB was roomier and therefore wider, and my husband hated it when we tried it out in the store, so we got the City Mini with an adapter. The adapter took a while to set up (though probably we were sleep depreived at the time, it arrived the day after we came home from the hospital, #2 was 3 weeks early) and didn't seem like it clicked properly, it even has some straps to put around the infant carrier, but it worked, and we had no problem going to the zoo and parks and places like that, plus it's fit thru every doorway so far. We got a great deal at Amazon, it was a 2011 for the same price as the 2010 model, and gave us a whole year of amazon Prime, (had already signed up for Amazon Mom, now they are changing things, I think starting today, and you can only get 3 months of Amazon Prime) plus, since it was part of my amazon baby registry, we got an extra 10 or 15% off, can't remember the exact #. The only thing I don't like is that the space is very limited for storage, there is a bar that divides the basket in 2, so big diaper bags don't fit, but we use a hook. Also, and this is almost across the board, you end up having to buy extra everything for it, most strollers come with nothing, no cup holders for parents or kids, so we had to buy a belly bar and then bought the cup holders for us and the kids from Sunshine Kids, now I think they changed their name to Diono or something, for $8-10 dollars each instead of over $20 from the jogger brand.
At any rate, that is what has worked for us, but each situation is different. I would recommend getting something with a 50 lb per seat capacity, since it's an investment, and you might as well get to use it for a long time. As someone mentioned, there are also the sit and stands, but that even now won't work for us, my older one would never stay in the stroller that way, and it's not as comfortable, nor really useful in the winter, for example, since I see U R in NY. One thing I found useful in my search, was seeing online reviews, can't remember her name, but there is a lady that has a ton of online reviews and grades a ton of single and double strollers, shows how to open and close them, and gives all the pros and cons. I think that I found her on a video review on Amazon for the city mini jogger and from there you can go to her page and check all the reviews. Good luck!

I would find a used one or borrow one to see if u really need it.
Congrats on your upcoming birth!

I have found that it really depends on how much you already rely on your stroller, and if you are on your own with the kids most of the time.

It is very rare that my husband goes anywhere with us, but I hate staying home and love to take my kids to zoos, museums, parks, malls, walks, etc. I have 3 kids, 5, 2 & 9 mos, and have 2 double strollers that I love:

Double jogging stroller - made by Baby Trend - Navigator - can hold an infant carseat very easily, and is very sturdy & affordable (should be able to get it for about $250 or less)

Double side-by-side umbrella - made by Combi - Twin Sport - light weight, very easy to fold down - about $200 - downside is it can't hold a carseat

There is always the option for you to just wear the baby in an Ergo or Baby Bjorn carrier, and push your older child in a single stroller. If the older child wants to get out and walk, you can put the baby in the stroller.

It looks like you already made a decision, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I ordered this stroller for my brother & SIL:
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12319184
It has 12 different riding options (not pictured on website, but pictured on the box). One of the options is for the older kid to sit on a little bench facing you, or stand on the back of the stroller. We have a cheaper "sit & stand" stroller and my 4 year old LOVES that he gets to sit in the "big boy seat." Good luck!

With a 4 year difference, I would say that a double is a waste of money. Unless you are walking/jogging miles or walking around all day at disney world, I don't see why a 4 year old would need/want to be in a stroller.

That being said, i have 4 kids, with each set being about 1.75 years apart. So, I've been through many double strollers. My go to double was the Phil & Teds, since it was inline, easy to steer, and could act as a single or double. My outside (i.e. long walks/disney world) stroller is a baby jogger city mini double.

It depends on your older kid. Mine are 3 years apart and my older one is a very active little boy who never liked the stroller that much. By 2.5-3 he was mostly out of it (though occasionally on a toddler harness). I bought a big sit and stand stroller and only used it for about 6 months. By then my older one was used to walking with the stroller. My friend with kids that same distance apart got it and then bought a double stroller. He older son is the total opposite of mine and liked the stroller until age 4. My daughter just turned 3 and I still use a stroller with her sometimes, especially in busy areas or if we have to keep up with her brother (she walks SO slowly still). So it depends on your kid and your needs. I'd look for a used one though if you want one. They are big, bulky and expensive and using 2 smaller strollers if you are out as a family may work better.

I saw but never bought a little platform you can attach for your older child if you want it (it folds up). This may be a better idea considering the cost and bulk of a double stroller.

I had a tandem stroller. I think it was Eddie Bauer. It was great but was a little hard to control sometimes. It could hold an infant car seat which was nice. I prefer the double strollers that are back to back (or back to front...with mine you could have the children face each other or not) rather than side by side because it is a lot easier to fit on narrow sidewalks, hallways, etc. If you are planning on taking long walks or your older child likes to ride instead of walk, a double stroller is a good investment. My oldest is 4 and she could still fit in the double stroller if she wanted so they can last a long time.

I have a Phil and Ted's Sport Buggy double, which I bought gently used on Craig's List and love. That being said, my older child was only 20 months when the baby was born. Now she is almost 3 and VERY rarely rides in the stroller. Fortunately, mine converts to a single. I think a traditional double would be a waste for you. Maybe consider a sit and stand style for the rare occasions that your 4 year old needs a lift. Good luck!

I recieved a double stroller for my baby shower. It was wonderful. My friend got the one where the toddler can stand. I kind of thought that was a nice feature.

Our double has been used almost every day for the last 17mos.
I'd say we've gotten our $200 out of it! :)
My kids are 3.5 and 17mos. We even used it when DD was newborn. We just balled her up and packed her in with blankets.

We have a City Jogger Micro. Great stroller and has held up beautifully!

I would consider a sit and stand so the 4 year old can hop on and off. They usually want to walk at that age anyway.

Our daughter is 2.5 and we barely ever use her stroller. Her brother is due in April (right before she'll turn three) and we just bought the 'rollerboard' attachment for our UppaBaby Vista if she wants to ride, otherwise she'll just walk. Double strollers are a drag. Get those kids WALKING

With this age-difference, I would consider a sit & stand stroller instead of a double. Unless your four-year-old is the type who likes to sit and see the world (my kids like to get out and run) this will be the most practical for you.

Also, please consider a baby carrier like a Beco or Ergo for the newborn. Then you won't need another stroller for a while!

I spent about 100 dollars for a side by side umbrella style double stroller. I did not want a inline bulky stroller. I wanted both kids to see everything. My main use was to walk them to there daycare, neighborhood walks and trips to the zoo. I was not purchasing them for shopping so I did not care about the narrow asiles or clothes racks. Its worked great for us and I really like it still. My kids are now 4 and 2 we rarely use it but its nice to have.
