Ok, I tore the mendicus in both of my knees and I'm getting surgery Feb 2 to fix it. My daughter is 21 months old and I am supposed to be on crutches for 24 hrs. It is supposed to be a quick recovery with the first 3 days being the worst. My husband is off work for the surgery day and day after but then he works the following 3 days so I'll be fenThding for myself. My parents are coming into town to help with our daughter but they won't be staying with us. I'm thinking meal times might get tricky. Any ideas of meals I can make ahead of time, freeze, and then just pop in the oven.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

ThAnis for helpful tips. I'm sure everything will work out. My husband isn't much help on working days (12 hr shifts). My parents will help but I have a feeling they will want us to come to their house. I'm most concerned with mornings, getting her out of crib and breakfast if my parents don't make it out that early. My mom is also down with a torn acl and mendicus. I'm not even sure how well she is getting around but she says she can watch my daughter. We will see I have friends ready to help too.

Good luck with the surgery...does not sound like fun at all. Not sure of meal ideas but make sure you have a cooler packed near your chair that has drinks and snacks for you and your daughter to minimize the time you have to get up. Also, get a backpack so you can carry stuff while you are healing. Crutches are a complete pain in the but!!

My Husband had that surgery.
On 1 knee though.
You have to heed... to the Doctor's orders, for recovery.
Each person, is different.
Even if you feel fine.... your knee is still healing.
For my Husband, well he had me... doing everything, as usual.

Can just 1 of your parents stay at your home??? To help you?
Or can they come over and cook for you?
Or do you have a close friend... that you can call and have her help you and with the cooking???? That is what I would do.
At a time like this....

The easy way to 'make' meals... is to, buy a bunch of pre-made entrees/dishes from Costco. And then all you have to do is heat it up. They have all kinds of GOOD pre-made meals.

all the best,
Susan

i would HIGHLY recommend doing one knee at a time, just for safety issues if nothing else. i've had the same surgery(torn meniscus), it's really not a bad recovery at all, i had three kids with mine, the youngest was 5 months old and we have a two story house with all kids rooms/toys upstairs. my husband was off on surgery day(friday) and the weekend, then i had a teenage girl come during his working hours for a week due to the stairs, but had it not been for the stairs, i'd have been fine after that first weekend. as far as meals, make a lasagna, grab a rotisserie chicken from costco, make a pot of spaghettit sauce. you'll prob be back up and moving within a few days, surely your parents or husband can help out or pick up to-go for a couple of days? good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery!

My sister had one knee done, and the next day we walk around at an amusement park all day. She was sore, but ok.

I just broke my arm in 2 places, had surgery on Sunday...and eventually have to have another surgery to take out all the hardware they put in...so I am currently dealing with this and it is not fun!

Today was my first day all alone so we had cereal for breakfast, sammies for lunch, "munchies" for dinner ( Salami, cheese, sliced apples & pears, crackers, olives, grape/cherry tomatoes, celery & carrots w/ranch dipping) and I am thinking popcorn for snack! Easy and delicious!

A big pot of spaghetti is always easy and can be used for lunch leftovers the next day.

Enchiladas are easy.

Frozen raviolis and garlic bread?

Maybe think crock pot?

I would absolutely go to the store and load up on easy munchies, things you can just open and hand the kids...like go-gurt, raisins, canned fruit and applesauce, cottage cheese, string cheese, granola bars...stuff like that? Maybe even let them get TV dinners?

Good Luck woman! It's hard being the Mommy when your injured!

Start freezing all your leftovers from your dinners now in little freezer containers or bags. Anything can be frozen including salmon, chicken, burgers, all vegetables, pasta etc. You can cut fresh fruit while sitting down. You will be very surprised at how independent and helpful a 21 month old can be when she knows mommy is down for a few days. You can have "picnics" on the floor with a huge blanket or sheet so you won't have to lift her to the table. Everything will be fine and the changes will be exciting for her at this age!
