"Door Monkey" - a Good Buy?

Ladies -

Little one is now crawling, and has started pulling himself up. In an effort to childproof, I'd like to do something with our doors. They are metal, so drilling isn't an option. Have any of you used the "door monkey"? It boasts that it is easy to use, and operates from both sides, requires no screws, and also prevents pinching. At $12 a pop, I don't want to buy them, if you mamma's all think they are a flop.

I am eager to hear your comments either way.

Thanks a bunch.

What can I do next?

I was just looking at it. Looks like probably a cheap plastic thing that a toddler could break easily enough and doesnt work for your front door. I'd say skip it.
The plastic thingys that go around the doorknob are pretty popular, a lot of my tenants use those, they seem to work pretty well until a kid is about 4 or 5 and gets strong enough to squeeze them.

I have the plastic door knob covers on any door, including exterior, that I don't want my kids opening alone. Mine look like the ones in this link. http://www.kidsmartliving.com/newdoorknobs.html?productid...

I agree that the door monkey looks like it would break easily.

You don't need to waste your money at $12 for each door.

Just buy those simple c-shaped foam door stoppers. I attached a web site just so you can see what I am talking about. They cost about $4 for two.

You can find them pretty much everywhere and they are cheap but very effective. Babies R Us and BuyBuy Baby definitely has them. I still use them and my son is 3 and a half. I use them now to prevent him from closing the bathroom door and wreaking havoc in there with the door locked. I also use it to keep the central air from forcing our doors closed at night and making a loud noise. And when you want to really lock the door, simply slip it right off.

Grandma T is right about the plastic things that go on doorknobs. My sister-in-law has those on all the doors in her house and they work great. The little kids (ages 3 years and under) cannot open the doors with those things. The older kids (10 years and up) can open the doors, and so can adults.
I wish those things had been around when my son was young. I bought those slide bolt lock and put them on near the top of the doors. Only adults could reach them so my kiddo couldn't get into rooms without our knowing. And I had one in a metal door too, and it worked just fine.

You said your doors are metal, but is there molding around the your doors? This product only works with modling, but at my friends she could not get it to work well (the doors were not the right thickness to work properly, modling did not allow enough room to clamp onto and she did not want to use the addtion piece by drilling into her molding). I would measure your doors, they say 1 & 3/8 inches thick to work properly.

Ladies, I have the Door Monkey and it's surprisingly sturdy. It also had its share of accidental bumps over the years and kept on working. My home had those lever style handles and nothing else worked. So the Door Monkey was my families savour stopping our little bub from getting into all the rooms she shouldn't be walking into! So can't thank the maker enough. Just checked the site and it says it works with all standard internal doors (mine was a normal door and worked fine).

They've added a cool video online www.doormonkey.com.au that shows how it works :) Worth the watch if you're curious how it works.

So Glad this is now available in Australia! Bought a bunch when living in the US... Finally it's down under!!!
