Just wanted to know where everyone put them in their home. Please be truthful as this is something that I need to know what other mothers do. Thank you.

What can I do next?

I used to used the door knob covers then my son discovered that he can take them off the knobs. I no longer use them. I am expecting my second child now and am looking for something new to use if you get any good ideas would you mind sending them to me?

Hello R.,

We have used door knob covers, when my son learned how to walk, we lived in an apartment so we didn't have a garage to store chemicals and stuff so we had one on the laundry room door where we kept all that stuff and one on the front door so he wouldn't get out and one on the bathroom door so he wouldn't get into the soap and shampoos and stuff. Now that we are living in a house with a garage we have all of our cleaning products in there and he is now 3 years old and knows not to go in the garage by himself we do however have one on the front door just becuase he knows how to unlock it. But everything else like the bathroom we don't have one on there anymore. I hope this helps

I don't use door knob covers. I use gates to keep her from the kitchen, the bathroom, her sister's room and my room. Most of the gates are just above my knee height, so I can setp over them. But, the one for the kitchen is higher than my waist and has to be opened to go thru it - and there's a trick to that so she can't do it alone.

I have locking screen (security) doors, so don't worry about the front door - but that's just me. Sorry!

Hi R.,

I actually never used "doorknob covers". We have all of our chemicals out in the garage on a very high shelf so there really isn't anything that is "off-limits". I did however buy the covers that go on the knobs of the stove. If there is a room in your house with valuables everywhere and just stuff you don't want your little one getting into then I would say you only need it for that room.

I only put a door knob cover on the door to the stairs because I do not want my son opening the door and falling down the stairs. I feel like the other doors are safe for him. I thought about putting one on the bathroom door because there are lots of dangers in the bathroom but he needs to be able to get in there when he needs to potty. so I taught him what he can and cannot do and he is good about it. I just make sure all cupboards and drawers in his reach have a latch if he can't play iwth things in them so all the other rooms are still safe. I do not use one on the front door because it is too hard for him to open, otherwise I might.

Hi! I just have to honestly share my experience with most "home safety" devices. At first, I was incredibly concerned with having everything available, all in the right places. However, I've found that most of these products are simply unnecessary. Even worse, I think they may have a tendency to give moms a false sense of security. . .suggesting we don't have to watch our children constantly, or teach them what NOT to do in the house. Perhaps these aren't terrible things. And perhaps they're not as difficult as they seem. I know this sounds like a soap box, but I just felt compelled to share. Through my experiences, I have ended up with only outlet plugs. I think your firm and loving mothering can teach them boundaries without using physical objects. Just a thought. . . .sending extra patience your way. Good luck mamma. :)

I am with Ann on this one. I never used them either. For a short period of time, we locked the door to the laundry room wich led to the garage but we don't use that anymore either. I agree with having a false sense of security just like I feel that way about fences around pools. Living in Arizona, I hear all the time about young children fallinging into pools, and more than 50% of the time, there was a fence so mom/dad/sitter thought they would be ok. But the gate was left open, or broken, or unlocked. I personally just stay vigilent, watch her, and teach her to stay out of things she shouldn't get into. It has worked really well with Madison, and I hope t works just as well when Brooklyn gets older.

I put them on the inside of my son's bedroom door (when he was first learning to sleep in a toddler bed) because he wouldn't stay in bed, or in his room and I didn't want him getting into things and playing instead of going to sleep. I also put one on the front door to keep him from going outside by himself, and on our bedroom door because he liked to go get into thing in our room. I don't use them right now because my son has learned to keep out of those things but my daughter just turned one so if she's into things like my son I'll be putting them back up in the next few months.

I don't use any right now, but my son is 3.5 years old, so I don't really need to anymore.

R.,
I put door knob covers on my laundry room door, garage door, pantries where I keep cleaning goods and my personal bathroom door. My reasoning is to keep her out of any possible medications, chemicals/cleaners, and away from the washer and dryer. I hope this helps you.
