Does anyone know of anywhere in the Chicago area (preferably near downtown, Hyde Park or North Ave. but am willing to go elsewhere)where I can donate used clothing, books, Cds etc. I was thinking of a Salvation Army store or similar. I have a pile of stuff I want to get rid of but feel guilty about just throwing it out. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

there is a salvation army drop off center on N. Des Plaines -- it's sort of in that Lake/Fulton area of downtown, about two blocks east of Halsted. Sorry, don't know the exact address (we always seem to find it by driving around). We drop off stuff there all the time (tiny condo, too much stuff). H

How about donating it to our Playgrounds garage sale!? The Commercial Park (a park in the Chicago Park District jurisdiction) is renovating our playground and the proceeds from the baby/kids garage sale help fund the renovation. I can pick up (depending on where you are) and can provide a tax letter. Please let me know if you are interested. Only taking gently used items. ____@____.com or ###-###-####

R.,

We donate our clothing regularly to the Purple Hearts. All you do is call them and set up a pick up time - they come to your house and pick the stuff up. They are not picky about what you donate, whereas the Salvation Army wants stuff that is as good as new.

Go to the Salvation Army at Clybourn and Ashland location. They have a big trailer with staff for drop-offs.
Other thrift stores in the city also accepts donations.

There is a Salvation Army post to donate whatever you wish at the intersection of Clybourn and Fullerton and Ashland in Chicago. (It's actually on Clybourn, a little east of Ashland.) You just drive into the parking lot and they will take your stuff for you and give you a receipt for your taxes. It's very convenient.

There is a Salvation Army store on Clybourn Ave (lincoln park area) right past the Fullerton/Ashland/Clybourn intersection. It is on the west side of the street right by Kinkos.

We visit there often as we are always trying to reduce clutter and our baby isn't even born yet :)

The Salvation Army in the city will pick up anything you want to donate. However, they only pick up one day a week, depending on your location. The number is listed in the yellow pages.

Dear R.,

We usually donate to The Brown Elephant on North Halsted just past Wrigley Field in Boys Town. It's part of the Howard Brown Health Center which helps people with AIDS. Of course there is the White Elephant on Halsted and Fullerton that helps Children's Memorial Hospital, but they always seem so ungrateful or just used to getting people coming to give; a turn-off to me.
If neither of these places appeal to you, I would suggest finding a Women's Shelter in your area and donate items there. I'm sure they would be appreciated.

R.,

There is a women's shelter (The Gospel League) located on Grand Ave and Morgan (just west of Halsted) that would be happy to receive women's clothing and children's clothes or toys.

There is also a Salvation Army located off of Grand Avenue just a couple of blocks east of Halsted that accept donations.

Good Luck.

Similar to Salvation Army--you can donate to the Infant Welfare resale shop on Fullerton. They will give you a receipt for tax purposes and the clinic is for low-income children, so the parents shop there a lot and are the people who can really use it.
You can also try the St. Vincent de Paul shop on Halsted. Good Luck

When I ship my clutter out, I try my hardest NOT to take it to Goodwill or the Salvation Army simply because it bugs me that they receive it for free, and then sell it.

What I do is look for the nearest Church, check for a drop box (typically near the rectory) and just drop them in there. Also, if you know of any Safe Havens, that's another place. Many women and children who turn to these places usually do not have the $ to shop, even at the Salvation Army.

Good luck!

I am the queen of donations! I donate to the Salvation Army (I think it is on Clybourn), the White Elephant - for Childrens Memorial Hosptial (maybe on Lincoln or Halsted), The Ark on Milwaukee just north of Division, and the Brown Elephant - also on Milwaukee north of Division. There is also a truck in the parking lot by Target on Cicero Ave south of Midway but I can't recall who it is for. All of these gives tax deduction receipts.

You should call Purple Heart. They will come to your house and pick everything up. Also if you have alot of baby items you might want to try Once Upon A Child on Milwaukee in chicago, they will pay for items gently used, whatever they dont take you could also call the neighborhood church.
