Dollhouse for Boys

I have a three-year-old son who really likes playing with dollhouses. I would like to get him one for Christmas but I would rather not get something frilly and pink - not that there's anything wrong with that. Can anyone suggest a dollhouse that is good for boys that isn't too "girly."

I think Melissa and Doug makes a wooden (no color) small dollhouse. My friend bought a small wooden dollhouse for her sons and they love it. Sometimes it's filled with GI Joe's, sometimes with teh family it came with.

I always got my boys small tents to put up in the house. It gives them a great place to play and hide.

Hi J.,

I would try Playmobil. If I remember correctly, they have a doll house and it is neutral in color - nothing frilly. You can add different parts to it, similar to legos, where you can build on with different sets.

Good luck,
L.

My son loves it too, but he plays with the My First Dollhouse I got for my daughter. Pink and frilly, yes. He loves it though!

I would go with a bat cave playset, or a castle playset since he'll likely outgrow the dollhouse quickly. My 3 & 4 year old boys are already pointing out toys that are "ewww for girls".

I have a castle for my son that I picked up at a yardsale. Its like a dollhouse but its very manly looking. He loves it.

Hearthsong.com has a fabulous dollhouse -- 3 actually -- that can be purchased separately or combined. We have the townhouse which has an elevator. It is 100% wood, no decor. There is are 2 pink panels on the roof but it is not girly at all. Though I have girls, every boy that comes into the house wants to play with it! the furniture -- sold separately -- is also all wood and not girls at all. Enyoy.

I am in the market for one too and just saw two plain looking ones I think are nice. Toys R Us has a plain wooden one and a modular one as well. Perfect for a boy. Also Target I just saw has a nice one as well. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Try a firehouse, I saw a commercial with Diego he had a rescue house where he took care of endangered animals, a castle with knights, I think there a lots of houses out there but they're not labeled as dollhouses, it's ok to avoid getting him something too girly, he's a boy! he's your boy, you can get him anything you want. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Plan Toys makes dollhouses that are good for boys. They're not cheap but they're made of eco-friendly wood and they also have tons of accessories and things to go in the house. Go on Amazon and search for "plan toys dollhouse" and you'll see the different options.

Plan Toy make some awsome doll houses that are suitable for both girls and boys. They are surely on the prizy side BUT they are build to last for years. Some of them can be reconfigured by the kids so they give a lot of imaginative play.

J.,

The children's room at our library has a barn that my son loves to play with. There's also a tractor, people and animals, but I'm not sure if they are a set. It looks more like a "boy's toy" to me, its not "girly" at all, not that there's anything wrong with boys playing with a toy marketed to girls, but husbands/dads do sometimes have strange ideas, don't they.

Merry Christmas,
R.

I just posted a similar question for dollhouse for my 2 yr old son. We ended up getting him a Ryan's Room Home is Where the Heart is dollhouse. It's not cheap, and the furniture is NOT included. But it's very solid, not frilly, and open on all 4 sides. My son is fascinated with stairs right now and this dollhouse has a moveable ladder/staircase. It also has an add-on garage and car, playground, and barbeque set that I think we'll be getting as the years go on and we add to the dollhouse. These all seem like more "masculine" features that may appeal to a growing boy.

I Love Playmobile! I am a mom of an 18mo old and nanny for a 6 and 8 yr old boys and a 10 yr old girl. They all love the playmobile kits and you can just keep adding on to them. There is a home (don't know that I would necessarily call it a doll house) but they come with people and furniture. You can add things like a basket ball court to the driveway, a soccer field to the yard and even a beach complete with a lifeguard. The possibilites are endless.

Good Luck!

Try Lakeshore Learning they have a great wooden playhouse that I purchased for my preschool. It is not frilly or pink and the boys at my school love to play with it as much as the girls. They are located in Hackensack, NJ it is a great store with educational toys. The website if you do not live nearby is lakeshorelearning.com. Happy Holidays!

Hi J., I purchased a fire house for my 4 year old son that is similar to a girls dollhouse except for boys. I purchased it at Costco about a month. It is hard to find ones for the boys. Have you thought about the bat cave or a castle? We have both and my son really enjoys them.

Good Luck!

Hi J.,

Plan toys has some very nice, gender neutral doll houses and accessories. I haven't splurged on it yet, because it is pricey.
I also saw one in the land of nod catelog (they have a website too.)
I keep looking for a less expensive one for my 3 year old son, but they more affordable ones seem to be the 'pink and frilly' sort.

Good luck!

"Not that there is anything wrong with that" LOL! I would try a castle or something like the Walton's house (yes, they still have it out!) etc. they are just house looking not overly frilly. NOTHING wrong with boys playing house - they will make good Father's one day with all the practice - something we really need!

Melissa and Doug used to make a plain wooden folding doll house but I think they changed it to pink for some stupid reason. I did not want a pink doll house for my daughter so we got her Plan Toys Doll House. Playmobil makes a take Along house also.

Just don't let someone talk you out of it.

Try Nova naturals. Or if you can find something through Waldorf-education, you'll have to do a search.

There is a plain wood (no decoration at all) house in our classroom, and my son LOVES IT!
Good luck,
M.

Are you the one who posted this a few months ago and your husband was against it?

I still think that trying to find one online or a Mom and Pop toy store would be your best bet. If I would've thought of this earlier, I would've suggested going to your local school and ask the shop teacher to have this as a project for the students.

Good luck
