Dog Incontinence

I have an 11 year old german shepherd. I know that issues come with age, but I am very frustrated with him. He has at least 6 bowel movements in the house during the day. That is in addition to the ones he has outside which he goes out at least 5 times a day. I am concerned that he doesn't even feel that it is coming out, and why is it so MUCH?????

I really have no money to take him in to the vet, but I know many people will tell me that is what I need to do....Just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this with your dog, and what was the outcome. At this point, I just continue to clean it up 6 times a day, and other than that, he has no signs of anything medical. He is not lethargic, sleepy, withdrawn, nothing is unusual with him...he is the same ole Rudy! I just don't understand why he goes so much, and why he cant feel it coming out

What can I do next?

You can decrease his water at a certain time or take him out more. If this doesn't help take him to the vet. It may be his kidneys.

If it is not diarrhea, yet he is having so many bowel movements, it could be because he needs a different formulation of DOG FOOD. That happened to a dog I know and that was the cause. Changed to a very high quality dog food suitable to his age, and the bowel movements went back to twice a day - after each meal. Also, be sure to take him on a walk after each meal.

As our last dog got very old, he could only go on very short walks, but when that happens, just like with elderly people, they need short but frequent walks. When I could not be home by in time, I had neighbor friends take him for a short walk.

It could be a serious health issue but if he doesn't seem to be in pain and
you don't have the money to take him to the vet, I would jus tolerate his
incontinence.
Cleaning it up and being kind to him.
Make him comfortable.
While I know it's not fun to clean up after him, my grandmother is having
issues in her old age (incontinence) and I have to clean up after her.
I hope when that happens to me (God forbid) that somebody gives me
some decency and helps me out.
I know it's hard but you are helping him out greatly
His inability to control his bowel movements could be something serious so it's not his fault obviously. You are so kind to take care of him. It could be bowel issues, stomach issues etc.
One of my dad's dogs does this as he food allergies
Hang in there and make him comfortable. That will make your life happier and easier. :)

Some dogs just lose the muscle control of the sphincter with old age. Poor guy, it is hard to watch them age.

You may try depends diapers w a hole for his tail...

happened to our lab, too, with age. I finally got tired of it and he did spend his last year or so in the garage with a doggie door to outside. so sad to see our friends get old.

Hope you're not using that "ole Roy" dogfood from Walmart. He needs senior dog food and you will have to mix old with the new until he gets used to it. I....on the other hand I would take him to the vet...but you say no funds....so Rusty will just have to suffer the conquences.

He is a senior pet, this is very common with aging dogs... just as it is with aging humans, they cannot control their muscles to hold it in. If you do not want to take him to the vet to see what if there is an underlying medical issue, then you can go out and buy pet training pads , place them in a few places around the house, and train him to go on the pads. Or you can buy him doggie diapers and deal with it that way. Also, take him out more frequently, especially in the morning as soon as he wakes, right after mealtimes and often during the day/evening. Some prescriptions are available to help with this, such as Proin. More tips to help are here:

A better quality food for senior dogs would probably stop this problem.
