Does My 2Yo Have Alleriges?

I brought my 2 yo to the doctor and at that time my son had a fever, was lethargic and had irritated eyes and puffy skin underneath. Dr. thought he had a virus and allergies. Fast forward 2 more weeks and the fever is gone but he still complains about his eyes itching and he rubs them til they are so puffy. Dr. gave us Xyrtec in a liquid. I haven't used it yet. I was hoping it would go away. He also has a bit of a stuffy nose. What can I do? Is it really allergies? He did not have any signs of this any other summer and no allergies in family except one grandpa.

What can I do next?

My son has the same reaction. Really itchy, puffy eyes and stuffy nose. We found out he is allergic to trees, grass, ragweed, cats and dogs. We give him Zyrtec daily. It's best to get him tested. They can do a blood test if you're not ready for the skin test.

It sounds like allergies to me, and they can make you miserable. Itchy eyes are the worst! Please give your baby the medicine.

Sounds like allergies to me. My son is three and out of the blue developed allergies even though he hadn't had them before. The zyrtec help us. We are going to see a pediatric allergist next week to find out exactly what he is allergic to. Good luck

Take your son to an allergist and have him tested. He's not too young. I insisted upon having both my sons allergy tested for food as well as common allergens such as mold, various pollens, dogs, cats etc. There's no reason in this day and age to have them suffer while we and the doctors "guess".
(Both my sons had allergies). My oldest son turned up very allergic to tree nuts. Thanks goodness I didn't have to learn that the hard way.
Be assertive. It helps to know, so you can prepare and medicate appropriately.
Good luck.

Dry, itchy eyes for that long certainly sounds like allergies to me. Know that allergies can "come and go". And you can develop allergies to certain things out of the blue, where before you have tolerated it. I'm not aware of allergies being heriditary. Allergies are unpredictable! I have season allergies (mostly in the fall) and some years I am in agony, and other years it's barely noticeable.

I would try just eye drops before I started giving him oral medicaiton. If it's just his eyes that are bothering him at this point, eye drops should do the trick.

If he develops nasal/sinus irritation, consider a neti pot. They are amazing! It might be too difficult to get a 2 yo told use one, but keep them in mind for when he gets older. Good luck!

Not eveyone knows that they have allergies. It goes undiagnosed. I suggest monitoring when this occurs, keep a journal..usually with my kids I can pinpoint what they are allergic to. I did this for myself as well. Ragweed and dust..ugggh!

According to our daughter's pediatrician, liquid zyrtec is the safest medication out there and will do no harm even if he doesn't really need it. I would definitely try it and see if it helps. One word of caution - it will make him VERY sleepy so give it to him before naptime or bedtime. Allergies are not hereditary and can happen to anyone at anytime. My husband has had allergies since he was 2, I didn't develop allergies till my early twenties, and my daughter developed seasonal allergies when she was one, so don't go by family history of allergies.

Hi C S,
Just thought you might like to know that there are some natural options for kids who have these kinds of issues. While the meds may eliminate the uncomfortable symptoms (and for that reason are sometimes absolutely necessary!), there are some things you can consider to address the underlying bodily responses of your 2 yo...to enable the body itself to deal with the allergies, and have worked for many, many children. Feel free to message me if you'd like more info.

Blessings,
A.

We have had good luck at our house with Children's Benadryl when allergy season shows up. It is not a daily med so we simply use it when it bad. This year it has been bad, we mainly treat in the evening so sleep is a bit easier without a stuffy nose. My two youngest have some spring and fall allergies, but it is getting better as they age.

I would highly recommend a good allergist, do a blood test, quick and easy, also more accurate. The reason he did not react previously is that you have to be exposed to the allergens 1 or more seasons to react to the environmental stuff. Food is the same we just don't realize it. I am all for the natural stuff but it does take vigilance to do as it has to be administered more often to get symptoms under control, also do not give mint anything if on homeopathic options it will neutralize the natural remedy. Zyrtec is a good option as well as Children's claritin. Nasonex is also a good option once you know what he is allergic to.

It is best to get the allergies under control as he will start to get really sick. All the mucus that the body produces during allergies can cause secondary infections ie. sinus infections, bronchitis, pnuemonia. He may also develop a skin rash/eczema that will be itchy.

My daughter has the same exact thing. Sometimes she would rub her eyes until they were practically swelled shut.

It is allergies. She now take Xyrtec and is MUCH MUCH better.

Please give your child the medicine. Why make him suffer any longer?

I suffer from allergies, and they make me miserable! Give him the zyrtec, no need for the poor little guy to suffer.

Zyrtec is safe. Go ahead and give it to him and he'll feel a lot better. We started giving it to our son when he was two. He only needs it for a month or two in spring and fall for seasonal allergies. Poor kid -- give him the Zyrtec!

And if it doesn't work, at least you've ruled out allergies.

Sounds like allergies. Why not get it confirmed through a pediatric allergist? He may have other suggestions for you on how to deal and you'll know if it a seasonal thing or year-long (like dust mites).
