I have an old document from Bohemia, from 1907. It's a church record. Beside the name it says Jel Do Americky. I'm assuming that means "went to America" or "left for America" or something like that. I do know that the individual did leave Bohemia in what was then Czechoslovakia for America in 1907. Anyone know what those words Jel Do mean? Thank you!
Thank you for the kind responses. They were helpful!
What you are going to find is there are too many dialects. My ex is Bohemian or at least his great grandparents were. His families funeral home was founded by his great grandfather. Anyway the only living employee who could translate their original records died 15 years ago and now no one can read the records. Even someone who can read Bohemian.
According to http://translation.babylon.com/czech/to-english/ Jel Do means he went to. Funny, Americky means American not America.
I can say "I am from the Czech Republic." :)
Vitame vas do Ceska Republika.
The spelling is probably way off... I learned that in 6th grade.... :)
Hmmm... After consulting google, apparently it is my translation that is way off. It seems I can say "We welcome you to the Czech Republic."
Have you ever checked the Ellis Island website to find your ancestor's entry into America? It is free and you can try several kinds of searches. you may be able to find the boat they arrived on and where they were headed and who they came with. Good luck. If you find someone that speaks Czech, please email me with info. Somewhere I have pictures with stuff written on the back that i would love to get translated.
I have found http://translate.google.com to be really handy for things like this. You can choose the language you are translating from and the language you are translating to.
According to http://translate.google.com, it translates to "He went to the U.S."
:)
Are they by chance Catholic? You can check Catholic records for Sacraments and Marriage dates and location. It is easiest if you know the church they were baptized in, they should have all the records because the record should be forwarded to them.
I know they keep good record, but I am not sure how easy it will be to find it from that long ago.
