My doc gave me an rx for a pre-natal vitamin and the others I have looked into all have artificial dyes!! I am looking for an alternative to a natural pre-natal vitamin. Anyone have any suggestions? My doc said to steer clear of the natural one's that have rosemary extract ( can cause contractions?) Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I will definitely check with my doctor before I take anything. She actually said pre-natal vitamins are over rated and the only real vitamins I need are DHA and folic acid. I personally feel more comfortable taking a pre-natal vitamin made for pregnant women but there are a lot of options out there without the added dyes. It's only for flavor and I could care less on how they taste :)

I have never heard a doctor say pre-natal vitamins were over rated. Interesting. Honestly, my kids are 28 and 24 so it was some time ago. I took the vitamins prescribe along with the iron with my first because I become terribly anemic. No health issues with the kiddos. Please listen to the doctor and don't take anything prior to discussing it with him/her.

This would be the time to put real concerns first. You have a much higher risk of hurting the baby if take "natural" vitamins.

I took the prescription and all my kids are normal. i am not normal but then I wasn't before I had kids either

I'd follow your Dr directions.

It sounds as if you've asked the Dr about this and you were given sound advice.

Before you go all natural on your own I'd be sure to run it by the Dr for a go ahead. I would prefer a couple of artificial died vs the unknown consequences of something natural to my child or my body.

Good luck!

Did she say why she felt pre-natal vitamins are over rated? I've never heard a physician say that before - with all my pregnancies I took what they recommended and had no issues.

Keep in mind, some moms experience anemia (low iron or low B12), some experience vomiting through morning sickness, some don't get enough nutrients .. so there is often more a need of vitamins other than the two you mention. And for some vitamins to work, you need others in combination - for the peak effectiveness. Folic acid is more for the baby's growth (my understanding) but mom needs extra vitamins too.

I don't know of any 'natural' vitamins but it's good you'll check with your doctor. Sounds wise.

It's great that you are concerned about your baby's health.

However, you are more at risk of ingesting a harmful substance with "natural" unregulated products than you are with a standard vitamin.

Unless you are on a vegan diet, you probably consume a lot more artificial dyes daily than you will with a tiny vitamin. Many, many foods we commonly eat have artificial dyes.

Things like lead have been found in vitamins, especially "natural" ones. I suggest you take an FDA regulated brand. You can research good ones pretty easily, but I think you should just go with the ones your doctor recommends. And like others said, I haven't heard of doctors saying you don't really need them.

Do your best with your kids' diet as they grow, but don't get freaky over it, as you will never be able to prevent them from consuming a certain amount of chemicals. They are everywhere.

It is good that you are talking to your doctor. I would talk to hi some more about using "all natural vitamins". The reason I say this is because just because something says it's all natural doesn't mean it's safe. (Like your doctor said about rosemary extract). There are a lot of false claims abut what is safe and what is not safe.

Good luck on your pregnancy!

Be careful with the dyes. They can cause allergies. They are banned in Europe for a good reason.

You are right to go without them.

My doctor was also in the take-it-or-leave-it camp with pre-natals other than folic acid and fish oil. My regular OB didn't prescribe vitamins and said that if I felt like taking one, anything from CVS or Target or wherever that said pre-natal on it was fine. But really, synthetic vitamins are mostly poorly-absorbed junk. Going for something more natural is wise - something like the one that tadpole linked to is going to provide you with way more nutrients than a processed pill with components made in a lab.

When I was a gestational carrier and pregnant with twins, that OB did prescribe a vitamin and I took it as part of my contract and because carrying twins is a lot more taxing on the body and taking the vitamin felt like I had more of a nutritional safety net in terms of getting everything the babies and I needed to stay well.
