My daughter is going to have to have surgery wed. My job has wrote me up for days off that they approved & they have advised me that if I leave that day they will terminate me. Does anyone know what I can do to protect my job & be with my baby?

What can I do next?

FMLA does cover this for larger employers. However, if you work for a small business, there is not much you can do, as Colorado is an employement at will state. This means that an employer or an employee can terminate the working relationship for absolutely no reason. Good Luck and hopefully your employer is not that cold-hearted.

So everyone mentioned FLMA and all... I just wanted to mention something-its kind of a rant- so sorry and bear with me!

I think its a shame that this is even an issue for you S.. This is a symptomof a really screwed up system in our culture. We are responsible for the next generation, and yet, we can't even be with our sick kids without risking our livlihoods!

I wish I had the answer for you! Please let us know what happened. And here is a great website for a grassroots group that is trying to address such issues!

If your company is big enough and you work enough hours and have been with them long enough, you may qualify for the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA Leave). FMLA leave is unpaid leave up to 12 weeks to care for sick family members. The advantage of FMLA is that you maintain your benefits and your employer has to keep your job for you. Good Luck.

I'm not sure if you company has this or not depending on its size but most every company has a FMLA act which states that if you have to leave for anything involving family that they are not able to terminate you and are to give you up to a year off from work and you are able to return back to work with the same position and pay.
