I'm about 17 weeks pregnant and the roots of my hair are just terrible! Does anybody know if I can dye it or highlight it? Thanks!

So What Happened?

I highlighted it! I feel fine, the smell didn't even bother me. It looks great! My mom is a hair stylist, and she said that I shouldn't do it, but I think that she might be a little biased! I researched highlighting my hair, and with all of your adivce, I decided to do it! Thanks all!!!

I have had two beautiful healthy baby boys and i colored my hair both time. I dont see why you couldnt but its all about how comfortable you are with it.

I did when I was expecting. I used temporary color instead of permanent color. My hair stylist said it would fine. I done it when I expecting my first and second one with no side effects. The doctor may reccommend you don't but I did anyway. Just go with a temp color instead of permanent. There is less chemicals in temp color than permanent.

yes you can but i would suggest highlights instead of completly covering roots due to the fact that your hormones are different and it may take more or less color to fix and normally you will loose some hair after the baby is born and if you do hi-and low lites you wont have to do it as often

My understanding is that you can. I did and I have 6 kids. I would check with the Dr anyways just to be sure. I know way back when I had my 1st daughter they said not too but in the recent years it was said to be ok. I think if you go on ask.com and type in that quetion it will give you a site with more details. Good luck!

You can use hair color and/or bleach on your hair after the first trimester. My family owns a salon and day spa in Spartanburg, Sc and I am a "hair chemical dependent" mom of three. I have both retouch color and hilights and continued both throughout all three pregnancies, with the exception of my first trimester! Hope this info is helpful!

I colored mine the whole time, also. I did ask the Dr. and they said fine. It is just the first trimester where the danger could be.

No you shouldn't dye your hair b/c of the chemicals in the dye. It could affect the baby.

Hi A..Congrats on the upcoming arrival of your second blessing.I had this same question when I was pregnant with my first baby. Here is what I was told:
Yes you can dye and highlight your hair after the third month as long as you are in a well ventilated area. The chemicals that are used in hair products have never been proven to cause any harm to the baby. However, if you inhale too much of them, it can cause respiratory complications.
I have three children and have had my hair permed, and highlighted with my pregnancies; all three kiddos are great!!!
Something that I learned with my third pregnancy is that Jergens hand soap makes your hair have a lot of body. (the kind of soap that is used in schools and public restrooms)No conditioner. I know that it is crazy, but it works!!! My hair is THIN, and when I want body, I use Jergens. Good luck with your delivery. Have a great spring!!!!!!!!!

Your not supposed to dye or highlight your hair, unless it's herbal. That's what I read in What to expect when expecting. I would ask you gyn doc or nurse.

I highlighted my hair when I was 4 months pregnant. My son was born perfect, 11 fingers and 12 toes...just kidding. They say just to make sure that you do it in a well ventilated area, preferably near a window, so that you don't inhale the fumes, and you should be fine!!

I read that if you use the kind of dye you buy at the store its fine. Its supposed to be a really mild version of dye and shouldnt cause any harm to the baby.

I got my hair highlighted w/foils twice while pregnant and everything was just fine. My hairstylist said that it doesn't even really touch your scalp (very minimally) and it wasn't dangerous.

I colored my hair during my pregnancy. My friend is a stylist and also colors hers. I highlighted as well. The dye/bleach does not soak into your head(or else we wouldnt get roots so quickly!!!!). So as far as I'm concerned its safe. My doctor told me the biggest problem will be the smell since we are supersensitive when we are pregnant

Hello A.,
Yes you can dye it but the only reason why some people won't do it is because your hair may not take the color it is being highlighted or dyed. The reason due to hormone changes in the body. I would first try a small amount on the underside of your hair first then if that works out, Go for it!! Good Luck :-)

I asked my nurse midwife if it was okay to color my hair when I was pregnant with my last child and she said it was fine. Just to make yourself feel good about it, you probably should ask your doctor.

Hi A.,

My understanding is that there are a few home based color formulas (Clairol?) that are harmful but anything you get in the salon these days is safe. Supposedly color companies have made a lot of improvements over the years.

Still coloring,

A.

I have been a hairdresser for 14 years and have studied this issue for many clients. As a mom (and mom to be) I have also talked to doctors and now my midwife about haircolor. The conclusion seems to be that unless you're planning on drinking the stuff, you're safe. The product stays on your scalp for such a short time, that absorbing anything bad is almost impossible and in the case of highlights, not at all. Another thing to know is that haircolor is made up of two main ingredients, Ammonia and hydrogen peroxide, these are things that you come in contact with all the time anyways. And the amount (and concentration) in haircolor are less than you'd find in most household products. The thing you do want to avoid while you're pregnant is artificial nails. They have much stronger chemicals and stay on non-stop,(you can absorb things through your nail) as well as the fumes you breathe while at the nail salon. If you still don't feel safe about putting haircolor directly on your scalp find a hairdresser that is good at foils and have you color applied like a highlight so the product is never on your skin. I strongly recommend the girls at Colorworks Salon at Short Pump Town Center. I worked for the company for several years (before babies) and they specialize in color and highlights.
