Does Anyone Have the Mirena Birthcontrol Implant?

I have a 3 month old baby and a 2.5 year old and I am thinking about having the Mirena implant put in for birthcontrol so that we don't have any surprises for a few years!!! I was just wondering if anyone else has gotten this done and what you think about it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their input. I was pretty sure that this is what I wanted to do and now with the positive feedback I feel much better about the decision.

Thanks again!

I DO! my little boy will be 5 months on the 30th...and i got my mirena when he was 9 weeks old. (on the 30th of october) so far i love it! my body is not completely used to the hormones yet..so i have had some annoying spotting. other than that i have no complaints. it is so easy not to have to think about birth control! contact me if you wanna know more details.. my overall review is two thumbs up.

I got it put in last may and I love it. I'll be honest w/ you,it was kinda uncomfortable to have put in and I had really bad cramps for about 3-4 days, but then it was ok. The first 6 weeks I had quite a bit of spotting, but then it leveled out. I am at about 9 months from the time I had it implanted now and I've just about stopped have periods all together. woo hoo!!
Check with your insurance first so you are not surprised. My insurance would not cover it, but Mirena does offer a payment plan.

Here's the website w/ info.

Also, I'm sorry to hear about the other mom's bad experieince w/ Mirena. I have suffered with severe Migraine headaches for about 15 years and since getting Mirena, I have actually had fewer headaches. Everyone is different.

Yes I have this. It's been great! My doctor put it in during a normal office visit on my lunch break and went right back to the office as if nothing had happened. Within 2 months I stopped having periods. Until my lovely then 12 year old decided to start hers and I started again. But they are light and over quick. I already had a tubal and had this done for severe bleeding issues I was having. I wish I had known about it before my tubal. Which was WAY WAY WAY more painful than giving birth. Good luck I have a few friends that have had it done with varying results on the no period thing.

Hi,

I opted for the Paraguard implant which doesn't use the hormones that the Mirena uses. I have had it for nearly 2 years and have been quite pleased with it. It sure beats taking a pill every day!

I LOVE IT! I've had it for 2 years with NO problems at all. Insertion felt like a pinch, but that was about all. A few cramps afterward. My periods were so awful after I had my son and this totally eliminated them for me. I had used pills in the past and they really don't work for me, too many mood swings and such, besides I really wanted the periods gone! My insurance did cover it, which was a complete surprise. My decision was to go ahead whether insurance covered it or not since $600 was cheaper than pills for 5 years. Good luck!

Hi,

I absolutely love the Mirena IUD. I have had it now for 2 years. I had it put in a month after my 2nd son was born. The pain was very minimal.. I did have slight cramping but it only lasted a few minutes. Since then.. I have had light periods. The first few months I did spot off and on, although it was just enough for a panty liner. It is very nice not to have to worry about pills, etc. Also, you can have it removed at any time. My friend had hers removed 2 months ago, and said there was no pain, and is already pregnant again. (I am done with my 2 kids) haha. My insurance covered the entire procedure, and I only had to pay a copay. Most insurances will cover it because it will save money in the long run over pills.

I know people who have loved the product and people (like myself) who have had bad experiences.

I was having horrible headaches that eventually lead to migraines ( I'm sorry to those who have those constiantly) and I suffered a mini stroke.
The doctors believed that the stroke was brought on by the headaches and not the Mirena implant however since it's removable I have never suffered from the migraines.
And, when I had the Mirena removed, we found out we were going to be blessed with our third child.
What ever you decide, just make sure you read all info/side affects..
Good Luck, and enjoy those babies.

I had one put in when my first was 6 months old, He's now three and I've never had any trouble with it! I love it. Short, light periods are great. It was a little uncomfortable when they first put it in but that was to be expected. It is in the right place (have it check every year) and my "strings" are nice and short so they don't bother my husband. I tried everything before this... the pill I could never remember to take, Depo (the shot every three months) made me gain 20 lbs and I was having a consistent period, which drove me nuts. I tried the patch which kept irritating my skin so I'd move it to a diff spot every week. Sure enough I had all these little rashy squares on my body and no where eles to put it. They fell off in the shower, or when i'd swim, even when I'd sleep. I should have know then but kept trying. Three months of being on the patch, My husband and I got pregnant unexpectedly!
The Mirena is the best thing... It works and I now have the control over when I can have my second child and I don't have to worry about it until then!
My Gyn says as soon as I want another child, they just pull it out as easy as they put it in and with-in the first three months I could become pregnant. Just like coming off the pill!

Best of luck!
V.

I'm glad that you asked this question. I just went to my doctor this week and asked her about this birth control method. She informed me that this procedure was surgical and that I need to check with my insurance to see what they will cover. My plan does not cover any of it and my doctor told me that the cost is $600 (however, it is supposed to last for 5 years) barring I don't have any bad side effects as one mother explained. Also, Michelle, thanks for the information that Mirena has a payment plan. Can you or any of you that know provide me with a website that provides that information or a number to reach them at? Thank you.
