Does Anyone Have Experience with And/or Feedback Regarding the Mirena IUD?

I have been on Depo for a couple of years now for birthcontrol and overall I've been pretty happy with it and been mostly side-effect free. I particularly like that its been a simple an injection 4 times a year vs a daily pill, and I especially the liked the very infrequent periods. However, because there is a caution relative to bone-loss with Depo, on my last OBGYN appt I had my bone density checked and it did show that I am a bit below where I should be for my age-range. My OBGYN suggested that I might look into a Mirena IUD as it has some of the same benefits of Depo without the side-effect of bone-loss. I'd like to hear from anyone who has had experience with the Mirena IUD - either good or bad. I've seen mixed things posted out on various internet websites and would like to hear from some moms who have had actual experience with it. Things like how painful or not the actual insertion was and if there were any side effects afterwards. Mamasource has been such a great site for good advise on a variety of topics...Thanks moms!

Hi G.. I tried the Mirena after my son was born and did not like it. Insertion was uncomfortable, but bleeding was my biggest problem. I pretty much had a period for 3 months and finally decided to just have it removed. I have had friends who have done really well with it, but my MD said people usually love it or hate it. Too bad I was the latter of he two! Good luck!

I absolutely LOVE the Mirena!! It's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I had it inserted just a little over a year ago. The insertion was a little uncomfortable, but not too bad. I did have some light bleeding for a couple of weeks, then it stopped and my period was extremely light and only lasted 3 days every month. I haven't had a period the past 2 months, so I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that it's not going to come back. I highly recommend it. -- My insurance covered it, so I just had to pay a $20 co-pay for 5 years worth of birth control -- a definite plus!

I just got the Mirena last month. The insertion was no more painful than an exam...it just takes a little longer. I took motrin for the first day because I hate menstral cramps and that is what it felt like. I have several friends who have had it too and I haven't heard any negative first hand experiences. Overall I think it is fantastic!

Had my Mirena IUD inserted after my second daughter was born. The most difficult part was getting my insurance to pay for it. The insertion wasn't memorable (just a bit uncomfortable) and I have had no problems in the 9-10 months it has been in. I would recommend it.

OMG!! I have the Mirena and LOVE it!! Had it put in in April 2007, 12 weeks after my DS was born. I didn't feel anything although the doc said it would feel like menstrual cramps. I had two periods and then nothing until this past november and I haven't had another since. I can not rave enough about it!!! Even the three periods that I have had were really light and my cramps were almost non-exsistant. I had worse on the pill.

I had it put in after I had my second daughter and it didn't really hurt when they inserted it and i was fine for almost 6 weeks and then it all went down hill. I had really bad cramps and i was on my period all the time the most i was off of it was for 4 days and I had it in for 11 months because the dr kept telling me most symptoms go away after a year and they never did. I had it taken out and I stopped bleeding almost imediatly. I think my body just rejected it!!!! When I had it removed the dr said that it was the 4th one she had removed that week. Like the other girl said I think it is either great or really bad. There is a 10yr one (not sure of the name) that my friend just had put in that doesn't have the hormones that Mirena does maybe that could be an option. Good Luck!!!!

I have had my mirena for going on 2 years now.... I have no complaints at all. It was virtually painless to have put in..I did spot some that day. I have minor spotting for a day once a month...but no cramping or discomfort with it. I think it is a great thing, and I have no regrets at all about getting it.

hi G.-
I got the mirena IUD after I had my son. The insertion was a little uncomfortable but not painful. I have personally loved it, the side affects have been little and mostly just spotting here and there. Personally I think the benifits out weigh the little inconvience of spotting. No more pills everyday, no shots,no other form of birth control needed, and your cycle gets lighter, shorter and could possibly stop. I love mine.
