When my son was small my doctor said that my son had a soft spot on the back of his ear but not to worry because it would go away just to make sure he wasn't spending a lot of time on that side. At 4 months he said not worry because it would round up now that he was going to start moving. He mention a helmet but he said not to worry that it would get better. Months went by and when he was 18 months I told him that it wasn't better and he said it was too late but it would get better. Years went by and never got better so I googled it and discovered plagiocephaly 🙁. My doctor never informed me about Plagiocephaly. I'm heart broken and I feel guilty because my son didn't get the right treatment. His ears are off and at this point there is nothing I can do. My advice is always better to do your research. I think doctors needs to stop saying soft spot it's Plagiocephaly and it can be a nightmare if not treated correctly. I'm sharing my story because I don't want no one to go through what Im going right now. ☹️

What can I do next?

Does anyone else, like his teacher or friends and family notice his ears are "off." Is his face "ugly?" What does his doctor say? Have gotten a second medical opinion about the way he looks?

Know that no one has symmetrical sides. My ears are uneven. One arm is longer than the other. My right hand has a noticably longer middle finger than my left. I have a mild spinal scoliosis not caught because looking for scoliosis wasn't done when I was a child. Where I've needed to adapt, adapting was just done with no thought from me or my parents.

I understand it's disappointing and you're angry. There is something you can do about it. Accept that he is this way. Love him. Support him in a positive way. Do not make him feel bad about his head shape. He is perfect just the way he is.

How old is your son? It's only been in the last few years that treatment by using a helmet has been accepted and yet this is controversial. It's only this generation that expects perfectly shaped heads. My generation and the one after accepted that shapes vary and that's Ok. The only time I see an uneven shape of head to be a problem is if it's so oddly shaped, kids make fun of it.

Relax. He's OK. You're not at fault. Really, no one is perfectly shaped. You son needs to feel that you're OK with this. If not, he will feel guilty because you feel guilty. Kids always believe things are their fault.

Eh. I think you need to work on getting over it. My kiddo had torticollis, which lead to a flat spot at the back/right of his head. I took him to a renowned craniofacial surgeon who said that unless it's extreme, they try not to do helmets and most kids' heads self correct as they start holding their heads up and moving, etc.

My kiddo's head improved, but it's definitely still slightly flatter at the back/right than anywhere else. Oh well. He's smart, happy, healthy, and handsome.

Is your kid healthy? Smart? Happy? Funny? Loveable? Cute?

You've got to let it go before you give your kid a complex about it.

Nobody has a perfectly round head - and no face is perfectly symmetrical.
Feel your own head - and you'll find all sorts of lumps and bumps you never knew were there.
If a babys head seems flat on one side, they will sometimes have the kid wear a helmet - and they do this before 1 yr old - because the soft spots close up as the skull bones grow and you can't guide the shape after that.
Our son never had a problem with it.
I wore him in a sling so much his head wasn't on a flat surface very much so his head didn't have any noticeable flat spots.
Every child is unique and has their own charm.
