Hi there. My daughter is 19 months and is having trouble articulating her words. My pediatrican suggested a speech therapist. Does anyone have one that they recommend - preferrably lower manhattan.. but willing to travel for a highly recommended therapist

Hi H.,
You might want to try referring your daughter to the NYC Early Intervention Program, you can call 311 or call an agency directly (if you message me, I can give you more specifics). I do special instruction in EI, I know a number of great speech therapists, a couple who service down in the E Village.
Take care,
E.

Hi H.-
Before you schedule an appointment with a speech therapist(which can be really expensive), you should look into Early Intervention. They will send someone to your home to evaluate your daughter to see if she is eligible for Speech Therapy. If she is eligible, they will come to your home to work with your daughter.
Hope this helps
K.

I see someone already suggested early intervention. Your pediatrician will have the phone number for you. When we lived in Chelsea, we used early intervention serivices for my first son and it was fantastic. They come right to your home to do the evaluation. If you child needs services they are provided in your home and if she isn't severe enough to qualify for their services they will give you recomendations for private therapists. It's a great place to start. They will give you tons of information. Also you could always use the services they provide and simultaneously supplement with your own private therapist. Either way, great job for getting on it so young!

Hi H.,

I would try your local school system and see what their policy is. In my town the school district will give free speech therapy to children once they turn three. I know your daughter is younger however they may have recommendations of a therapist that your daughter can continue with in their program. Also, we have an early intervention program called Building Blocks in which insurance will pay a portion. I am in NJ so I do not know what NY has to offer. One other thing is I own a preschool and 19 months to me i really not cause for alarm in my opinion. Unless she is not saying any words I really would consider waiting it out. Is she in any type of preschool program? I would look into putting her into a preschool program you would be surprised how much they start talking when they are with other children. Good luck!!
