Does a 17 Month Old Need Dental Insurance?

It would be $20/month to put my 17 month old son on my dental plan. Is that worth it? Does he even need to see a dentst at this point?? The coverage would end when he' s about 2 and a half years old. Should I just wait until then to put him onto my plan?

my daughter has seen the dentist since a year old. i think it is worth it to put him on it. if he falls a breaks a tooth the insurance will cover part of the price it cost to fix it. my daughter is 3 now and lets me floss her teeth at 18 months and loves her dentist. i take my daughter to a pediatric dentist because they take extra time for them and understand that kids will be fearful.

most likely what they will do is count their teeth and look for cavities. then they will ask you about tooth brushing and about their health and if you have any concerns. my daughter got her first cleaning done in june (3 years old). she will be going again in december or january i cant remember when i schedualed it. lol

Honestly you never know what may happen, they fall and knock a tooth out or something. I say your better to be covered then not.

You are supposed to take your child to the dentist once they turn one! My daughter has been on ours since she was born I think.

Yes, it is worth it.
You need dental insurance for him... it is best to have it than not.
You cannot foresee... what will arise....

It sure is worth it-You should have your child see the dentist yearly afetr the age of one unless the dentist sees otherwise or they have some things they may be watching or have cavities. Yes I said cavities-even at that age children get them. I use to work for a pediatric dentist and u would not believe what I have seen-we had kids as young 1 yr sometimes younger. Better to be safe than sorry-esp if something pops up-my daughter bumped her tooth on the stroller wheel and we had to take her. :) L.

It is worth it. My ped dentist likes to see them when they start getting their teeth in, but we waited until our kids were 18 months. With my oldest, she did not go until she was three and she was terrified. Starting off young gives them time to get used to the idea. My four year old is not scared at all, and my three year old does pretty well too.

Most people I know start taking their kids to the dentist at about 1 yr we waited until 18 months so yes in my opinion if you are going to use it then it is worth it to get it.

edited: make sure you go to a pediatric dentist. A regular dentist usually won't see a child until 3 or 4 but a pediatric dentist starts seeing kids when their teeth start coming in and has more knowledge about the mouths and teeth of children.

Our dentist said to start visits at 3 years old. If there is an injury due to a fall it will be covered under medical. However, a "life changing event" such as a birth, marriage, etc. is usually the time that you add someone to a company plan, so we added our kids to the plan at birth. You then go from a 1+1 plan to a family plan, which is generally a lot more than just adding half again of your previous price.

My dentist didn't want to see my daughter until she was 3 and could sit in the chair by herself. So we didn't cover her until she was 3. She did fall and have a tooth injury before then but it was covered under regular medical. I would contact your dentist (or the dentist you want to take him to) and find out when they want to see him and start the coverage when necessary.

Our girls don't go to the dentist till they're 3. The dentist said that it can be pretty scary for smaller kids as they don't understand what's going on. At 3 they can understand what's being explained to them. Personally, I'd wait till he's 2.5 but go with your gut.

Ask your company.. because you are suppose to put them right on.. sometimes if you don't you can't add them later on.. it happened to a friend.. he put his new wife on medical.. and forgot about dental.. went to do it about 6 months later.. and they said to late.. then he figured when it renewed at the end of year he could.. well guess what.. he can't ever get her on.. because you have to do it right away.
