A second opinion is probably a good idea also. Please know that there can be issues with prolonged steroid nasal spray usage also. I know in adults it can cause cateracts.
My 2 year old daughter has experienced asthma symptoms, robust snoring and frequent lingering colds for a year and after a recent visit to the ENT doctor, surgery was recommended for large adenoids. The x-ray showed that her nasal passage was largely constricted and that most cases resulted in surgery. We have reservations on performing surgery with general anesthesia at her age, especially since it's not effecting her sleep or speech. We were given a steroid nasal spray to see if we could shrink the adenoid, but if it doesn't work we'd like to explore other options to surgery.

Hi to both E. and your husband. I would consider taking a look at www.earthclinic.com. It has some great home remedies for all sorts of health challenges including asthma. Some of the remedies from this site I have used on my children with great success. Of course you may want to consult your doctors before considering anything suggested for your daughter. Here is the specific page about asthma: http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/asthma.html
Good luck. We also have a two year old (son) and live in the Grand Lake neighborhood.
While it is always good to explore treatment options, I will say that you should be glad it has been caught so early. My niece had surgery for this last year, at age 10, after years of stress, misdiagnosis, and too dismissive recommendations and treatments. If my SIL could go back and have it fixed at age 2, she would in a heart beat, despite the risk, the change has been that dramatic in my niece since surgery. My SIL basically feels that the missed diagnosis stole her child from her for 10 years, since an unhealthy child is rarely an easy or happy one, and all the drugs her daughter was given instead altered her personality.
It is a rough road, making decisions for your child, I know that. Talk to several specialists, learn and understand, and then listen carefully to your parental instincts. I've discovered our own parental instincts to be one of the best tools out there. Medicine is more art than science, and applying the art correctly relies heavily on what we as parents know about our children, that can never be fully conveyed to a doctor in the typical visit.
I am introduced to a Children's wellness Expo on Aug 2 in Sunnyvale. There will be 13 doctors from around the country sharing alternatives to address the needs of our children today. It is very exciting to have an event like this in the States. They have them in Europe and now here.
If this is something that interests you, email me and I will send you a flier and put you on the guest list as there is limited seating.
Wish you well.

Hi husband of E., :)
I think it's smart that you're exploring other options for your daughter, as surgery can be quite harsh, especially at such a young age. I am a chiropractor in Oakland (Piedmont Ave) and would love the opportunity to help your daughter. We've had success in helping kids with symptoms that you describe, as we restore function to the nervous system, so that their little bodies can work properly! Of course I can't guarantee that her adenoids would shrink, but she'll have the best possible chance at healing if there is 100% communication and 100% function in her body. :)
I offer free consultations, to learn more about prospective patients, and for them to learn more about me. Please let me know how I can be of service to you and your family.
Best,
L.

I understand your concern about surgery but if you are seeing a pediatric ENT you should be in good hands. My son had surgery with DR. WEssman when he was older than your daughter but the procedures that they do are so quick that they aren't under for very long. Dr. WEssman (might be only one S) is fabulous and he works through Children's Hospital. I've known many people whose children had surgery at a young age. They were understandbly very nervous and concerned but all of them were extremely satisfied with both him and the results of the surgery. If you haven't seen him, I would definitely recommend at least talking to him for a 2nd opinion.

My son had the surgery in Feb. It was the best thing that we ever did for him. He was constantly getting every cold and flu. He also never sleeped through the night until after the surgery. We never realised how badly the large adnoids and tonsils were affecting him especially his sleep. He has really changed after now getting better sleep and hardly is the grumpy monkey he used to be when he would wake up. Also so far no flus or colds but we will see how this next winter goes.
I know how scary general anethesia is but I have a daughter who is deaf in one ear and we had to sedate her at 8 mos old and again at 2 yrs for advanced testing. I was a mess before the first one but we had exhausted ourselves and our daughter doing the non sedated testing at SF speech and hearing and never got good enough results to even get her diagnosis.
I see you are in Oakland...I would highly recommend childrens hospital if you end up doing surgery. We drove from Marin and were very happy with our experiences there.

HI E. B and husband - I don't have any experience with large adenoids, but I can tell you about a fantastic alternative pediatric medical practice in Mill Valley - it's a long way from you, and it's expensive to even be a patient of the practice... but they do a great job in presenting patients with the choices available, ranging from the orthodox medical view, to the least invasive, herbal / homeopathic method. Sadly we can no longer afford regular care for our son there, but if we had a major issue, we would definitely want to consult with them.

There may of course be a holistic pediatrician in your area.
Good luck
