Do Your Toddlers Do This?

My 2&1/2 yr. old daughter frequently tells long "stories" that not only make no sense, but they can only be described as "Word Salad." She basically just says a stream of words and non-words but uses intonation, and even hand gestures as though she's making sense and telling me something. It's really cute, and I love sitting there and trying to figure out what, if anything, she's trying to say. I think she's just practicing talking endlessly w/out taking a breath like her Grandma... ha ha but the weird thing is she has a large vocabulary and can speak very well when she's not doing this. Do your kids ever do that?

What can I do next?

My LOL did it for a little while when we were apart for a week or 2. It was asdfalkf pioquwepioopqiweqiohn uiqiuhadaklsaierwerasdfjasljaaasjflajsfljaslfjaslj Daaaa-dy. It's so cute and I have to stop myself from laughing. I just answer yes.......... Sometimes I have to make a real effort to understand what he is saying now at 3 years of age - but it is worth it.

Yes, it sounds completely normal. My eldest did this a lot, and to this day she has a vast, wild imagination and contnues to make up a lot of stories to tell. And my yougest seems to take after her a lot. His only problem is that he has to be heard over her and his other sister, so he tells these tales in a jumbled confusion and often gets out of breath because he's trying to keep up with the others.

LOL like her grandma and my MIL......that is great! that is what she should do, she is just talking/telling story/ practicing her vocab. really good stuff!!! besides she knows what she is saying LOL> if you can get one word out of it like dog say yeah oh yeah the dog then what....stuff like that will encourage her to keep the chatter up, bc that is what you want to do. xo

Yes, it is so funny. I just wish that I could catch it on camera, but by the time we get it she is wondering what we are doing and gets off track from her "story".

Ooooooooh yeah. And then later it turned into stories of what he *wanted* to have happened. Like telling the neighbors a story of how he was essentially viciously mauled and had to ride in the ambulance with the sirens and go to the hospital and _________ and _______.

Sigh. ANYTHING he found exciting he persoanlized into a totally fictitious story.

That was a tough 6 months. We *finally* got him to preface with "Wouldn't it be exciting if _________?!?!".

Yes. And, they sound so convincing, it sometimes makes me think I'M the idiot who can't understand what my my kids are saying! I think you're right in that they hear adults talk in a string of sentences all the time, so they want to, too.

My son did this for awhile. Just chattered on and on and also had a great vocabulary my mom said he was trying to be me as I talk a mile a minute. So one day I turned the tables and went in to chatter mode, my son listened intently and after a few minutes he said "Ummmm, mom??? could you land the plane??? you know, get to the point??!!" it was hysterical.

YES! Is the cutes thing. I don't forget the first time she did it. I was in my way to put her on her bed and she stand up in our bed and follow by give us an almost an hour monologue.
My husband and I were trying so hard to not laugh our heads off.
Like you said, there were some words, some non-words, some sound effects and a lot of hand movement.
Don't forget to video tape her!

Yes:) all four of my daughters! They also made up stories with real sentences, too- but NOT real situations (LOL). It is very super cute. A few times I've video-taped or written the "stories" down (as best as I could). I highly recommend that!

Yes! My son always has, and now that he is older he still does it, the story is just more coherent now. Yesterday he told me he got eaten by a bear, and than jumped out and went to grandmas, and grandpa had a fish, and than we all came back to Alaska, and so on and so on. He will keep going until you cut him off! it is so cute :)

haha, yes, my son sometimes does it. He's older, but still does it with phrases he's heard me use. My mom was talking to him on the phone yesterday and she asked him a question and he replies, "That's so interesting, grandma! A lot of responsibilities!" Yep, it's just practicing the vocab, but is oh so cute!

My daughter used to sit down with a magazine or cataloge and make up stories to the pictures she saw. It was very cute. My advice it let her do it, I would video tape it lol. Sounds normal.
