Honestly, YES! This don't wear white after Labor Day thing should have died when Women got the right to vote.... Just my opinion.
Just curious, having a debate with someone:)
Wow, I didn't expect that many responses, but I had fun reading them! I was just curious if anyone still paid attention to the old "rule". I don't hear anyone mention it much anymore, except in the south. I will admit that as outdated as it is, I can't help but feel guilty at the thought of wearing white after LD, not that I wear it much anyhow. Guess it all depends on where you live.
thanks guys-have a great day!

i am a fashion rebel!
i wear black in the summer and white in winter!
yeah, i'm just that badass.

S. (who is actually just fashion clueless)
I wear whatever I want to, whenever I feel like it. I don't let some over paid marketing person tell me what I can and can not like or wear or what they think looks good on me.
I will answer this two ways:
1) I have four kids. I don't own much of anything that is white.
2) But if I did, I would wear it whenever the hell I wanted to wear it!
I wear flip flops in the rain...
Take a guess on what I think about white and the date on the calendar.
Hope your debate isn't getting too heated :)
When I was growing up, it was rather a fashion rule that you didn't use your white shoes and handbags before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. Gloves were another matter (shows you how old I am!), and there is a "winter white" that's fine in December.
I don't think it's considered a fashion rule much any more. But once you have transitioned into fall/winter clothing, your white summer shoes are gonna stick out like sore thumbs (or toes, as it were). Whether that transition comes right after Labor Day or later in the year depends a lot on where you live.
You know I don't. Not because it's "wrong" but I think subconsciously, I'm anxious to invite Fall to take over... :)
In California we wear white all year long! Shorts and sandals too :-)
I sometimes do, but always feel a pang of guilt. I know that there was a reason that long ago that was the accepted fashion rule (regarding mud splashing up onto your clothes... in a different era when there were dirt streets and horse drawn carriages).
I do tend to try not to wear bright white (although winter white I never think twice about)... but I won't say that I do not do it. It is rare, but yes, I do. And even though I know the logical reasons that the "rule" doesn't apply anymore... I still feel guilty every time I do it.
I'm going to the beach tomorrow and plan to wear my white capri's! I mean, really, it's going to be a beautiful summer day. I'm not young, I know about the rules, and I don't care!
I wear any color I want, any time I want.
I have never seen any logic to the idea that certain colors or certain styles were only appropriate for certain times of the year or day.
I wear white after Labor Day, boots in summer, basic black before six pm. The sky hasn't fallen yet.
Yes! In fact, just wore white pants yesterday. I know the rule is Memorial Day thru Labor Day,. but it stays so hot around here until mid to late October, so I wear them through then.
My Mom raised me believing you are only supposed to wear white (pants/skirts/shorts/shoes mainly) between Memorial Day and Labor Day....BUT I am having a really hard time with that b/c it is still in the 90's here and everyone is still wearing white!
I never wear white. Stains too easily!
Antiquated rules like that don't apply where I live in Southern California. Pools are also available 365 days/ year.
I think there are different types of white... A winter white cashmere sweater is not what the rule is about I believe. I think it's more about white shoes, white cotton or summery pants or skirts etc. A plain white shirt in the winter I think is fine... But I don't wear my white capri pants anymore since Labor Day passed. To me that's what the rule applies to and I find it kind of fun to abide by it since it affects so few of my clothes. I agree with a poster too that white shoes in certain weather is going to look silly. I saw a woman last night in white platform sandals and since it's now a week past Labor Day, I did think they stuck out...
I'm in nursing school so ... yeah I wear white after labor day and before memorial day LOL
As for the "rule" and how/when it came about ... it came about a couple centuries ago when women wore LONG skirts and the fabrics WEREN'T wash and wear. There were also no washing machines. So getting clothes clean wasn't the easy chore it is now.
It came about with the upper class ... who were really the only ones who could "afford" an extensive wardrobe ... and those long skirts made out of things like linen, silk, satin, brocade and so forth that would get disgustingly filthy in snowy/rainy weather and be almost impossible to get clean.
With the advent of bleach, washing machines and blended fabrics ... that "rule" is useless and really only adhered to heavily by the older generations or the upper class.
So there's your history lesson for today :)
I do!
And I *love* winter whites - white/ivory wool sweaters, etc. Very elegant.
ETA: I live in the big city, so I rarely wear white shoes, at any time of year (they'd get dirty fast). So my answer is about clothing other than shoes.
Some. White isn't a big part of my wardrobe, but I don't let the date dictate what I wear. I go by the weather and what I will be doing.
I don't have much white anyway, but I wear whatever color whenever I want. One less thing to keep track of. ;)
Do you mean pants and shoes? Definitely not, except for perhaps a nice winter white pair of dress slacks. Unless you're Elvis then NO on the shoes. :P
I don't think it matters for shirts or coats (never heard of that, and I'm from the south).
First of all, I don't think I even have anything white right now, but if I did, NO, I would not wear it. I'm "old-school" and I still believe in some fashion rules!!
In the same line of thinking, I would never wear white before Easter either!!
Bottom line, I guess it's just a personal choice any more; seems no one cares about fashion rules these days!!
So, have you won the debate???
I know that rule is out the window in the fashion world. But I just can't make myself do it. What can I say...I'm Southern. ;)
I do not really wear white much at all anyway. So, nope. However if I was not such a slob that constantly spills on herself I would wear white whenever I darn well pleased.

I don't have much white and look forward to getting out the deeper shades of colors in my closet for fall....but yes, I do :).
Um, I pretty much wear black before, after, and during Labor Day. But I believe that rule is terribly archaic and not at all to be followed in this day and age.
Wore white pants yesterday. :)
That old "rule" is just that. Old.
I live in Vegas and can wear whatever I want. However, when I went to New Mexico after LD and went into a shoe store wearing sandals the sales girl said something about me "needing" a pair of after LD shoes. Ummm...when I left my toes were hot!
Yes, if the desire to wear white comes up, I put it on.
Yes.
The social morays and traditions of the 50's don't matter anymore.
I wear what I want, when I want. I've never really cared what people think.
I don't really have much of anything that's white.
I dress for the weather.
Where we are, school has started and today's high is suppose to be 89 degrees - so I'm pretty much wearing what I wore in August - shorts and polo or tee shirts.
When it gets cooler (this might happen anywhere between Oct and Nov - one year it was 80 degrees on Thanksgiving) I'll break out the jeans, long sleeved shirts and sweat shirts.
In the spring, it's usually warm enough by the end of Apr to get the shorts out again.
Yes, though I don't wear white in general. No "fashion concept" is going to tell me what I can and cannot where. Google might give you the story behind the concept.
And there is a crazy movie, dark comedy, about a mom that is a murderer and she kills someone for wearing white shoes after labor day. Can't remember the name though - sigh!
You know, I don't think I own anything that is white. Well not shoes or pants anyway. I am extremely clumsy so even if I did have any white pants or skirts, I probably would only wear them on special occasions.
So I guess my answer is No, but not because of a fashion rule.
Of course I do. I don't subscribe to those antiquated "rules."
I wear whatever I want to wear. I have a lovely winter white coat that gets compliments year after year. :-)
I liked reading your answers - nice to see that people either wear white after Labor Day, or they don't care if others do! I bought a pair of white jeans int he Spring and all of a sudden it was too hot to wear them! It's still too hot today (90 degrees) but I'm looking forward to a cool Fall day where I can where them. I'll pair them with something "Fall-like" probably.
Well the rule pertains to summery white bottoms and shoes only. White tops have always been appropriate any time of year. I don't own white shoes and never will so that's not an issue. For bottoms, I do have two pairs of white cropped denim jeans (a little longer than capris) and I will rotate them out of my wardrobe when I rotate out the rest of my shorts and summer skirts, which will be any day now as the weather cools. We're getting some heat tomorrow and then that will probably be it for us until spring.
I think that in places where there are seasons, it's nice to have some "rules" to abide by. I don't follow Memorial Day/Labor Day per se but basically, I wear summery clothes in summer and clothes appropriate to other seasons in those seasons. I would assume that in place where it's summer-like weather year-round, the rules about white don't apply at all and never have, but I could be wrong about that.
Yes! But I live in Florida and work for Clinique. So white is definitely a big part of my wardrobe!! I think it is more of a northern thing. My cousins in Staten Is. would never wear white after Labor Day!
yes. I think those rules are outdated.
I wear white t-shirts and blouses year round. I have one white sundress that I wouldn't wear after labour day, unless the weather was really nice. I never wear white pants, capris or shorts because they would get dirty too fast. I think that rule is pretty old fashioned, just like children shouldn't wear black.
My very proper roommate in college 20 some years ago said to me "Oh, NO, we DON'T wear white after Labor day!". I looked at her like she was insane. What kind of a stupid "rule" is that?!
Yeah, of course, I wear white after Labor day.
I have a pair of winter white corduroys - so yeah - I certainly wouldn't wear them in the summer. White shirts have always been appropriate year round. I haven't owned a pair of white jeans since high school.
I have never heard of doing that
The only white I wear is white tshirts, and I wear those all year round. My friends who wear cute white pants and dresses wear them after Labor Day.
Yes, I'd wear white after labor day (If I owned anything white, which I don't!). That is an old fashioned rule. Think of pretty white blouses, white sweaters, white winter coats. That no white rule is goofy. I don't know anyone who follows it.
