Do You Think the Cruise Industry Will Be Affected?

After watching the awful tragedy of the Italian cruise ship that capsized then it kind of makes me think twice about taking a cruise in the future. What do you think? What is your opinion of the captain's actions? I have watched The Talk and another talk show and some people are appalled at his actions.

My dad and stepmother go on cruises all the time and talk about what great trips they have. I understand that this was a rare and unusual circumstance.

They are accusing the captain of being drunk and eating with a Russian woman and he is a married man. He was ordered to return to the ship and refused to do so.

The whole thing really is a tragedy in all ways. And, it does remind me of the movie, The Poseidon Adventure.

What can I do next?

Well it certainly makes me a little weary of going on a cruise. What a horrible tragedy, thank goodness the captain will have to pay for abadoning the ship. I was just thinking the other day how Captain Sulley landed the plane in the water AND he was the last one off the plane (a true hero).

I hope so. I hear that people 'disappear' from cruises, true or not I don't know. Captains like this, so many things are out there about them. Somebody needs to be more careful in staff, etc. Something seems not very safe to me.

We don't go on cruises because we are just not interested/ not our idea of a fun vacation.

Bloomberg did report today that Carnival cruises is backing off the advertising right now, probably just to let things settle down. Hopefully they'll stop calling and mailing me with my "free" trip.

I think it may be affected very temporarily. I think people will still go on and enjoy cruises but if you were iffy about it to begin with (like my dad) then you won't go. My initial thought upon hearing that the captain chose to flee was that he was drunk or otherwise chemically compromised.

I don't go on cruises because there are really no laws at sea. I was reading somewhere that rapes and robberies happen a lot on these cruises and the victims don't have much legal rights because the companies base their cruise ships out of other countries. There is a lot of red tape in which countries laws would apply.

As for this accident, no I don't think it will hurt the cruise industry. The Titanic sunk 100 years ago and the industry is still doing just fine.

People didn't stop getting on planes after 9/11, so they probably won't stop taking cruises because of this. There may be a slight hiccup, but it won't last. There is risk associated with almost anything - you can be hit by a car crossing the street.

This had nothing to do with the actual ship itself, which was an Italian Carnival ship, (a very reputable brand/company) had to do with a crappy employee who happened to be the captain, plain & simple.

I have heard about the non existent laws in place for when crimes happen aboard a cruise ship - to me, that is more of a deterrent than the incident in Italy.

Well just last month we booked our first family cruise vacation. I'll admit being a little more nervous now, but we're still going.

No, I don't think it will change a thing. Interesting some of the comments on here. First of all, Costa is the luxury division of Carnival Cruises. It is the same as Celebrity is the luxury division of Royal Carribbean or Lexus of Toyota. So, yes, it was a major cruise line! And Yes, it was a major cruise ship! She is similiar and a sister ship to the Carnival Splendor.

Second, the legality will depend on whether the ship was in international waters and where the ship was flagged. Both will come into play in a court of law. Interestingly enough, the ship is flagged in Italy so if it happens to be in Italian waters (I'm not sure about this) then same jurisdiction.

Third, do people disapper from cruise ships? Yes - and it is a very easy answer. Either they are pushed or they fall overboard. If you fall too close to the engines or waters that are being propelled towards the back of the ship towards the engines then you become fish food..it is really that simple.

I was hoping that prices would drop so that we can take a cruise!

I don't think it will affect it at all. What happened was really because of a captain that was a bad apple. This wasn't one of the major cruise lines or cruise ships. I have been on so many cruises that I lost count. They were very safety oriented and there were absolutely no problems. If anything, cruising will be very safe from now on on all cruise lines after all this publicity.

It ran aground then tipped over when the captain went off course 3-4 nautical miles to do a 'fly by' the island to impress someone - I'm not sure who.
In my mind, the changing of the course (it wasn't even for emergency purposes - bad weather, mechanical failure or something like that might have made it excusable) was the greater crime than not getting back aboard to coordinate rescue activities
The industry will have a slight dip in bookings for a little while, probably only a few months and then it will return to normal as people forget (and/or ignore) what happened.
Cruise lines might look to building smaller ships - smaller numbers of guests are easier to evacuate - but they are going to have to weigh ship size vs profit and they will do what ever maximizes profit.
Besides salvage operations on the ship, it'll be interesting to see what law and civil suits happen in the aftermath.
Does travelers insurance cover damage resulting from an incompetent captain?
We'll find out.

I think it will, not long term though.

Everyone know that this was an unfortunate combination of bad luck and a very bad captain. I am so appalled by his actions to... it breaks my heart to see he felt nothing thinking that people would probably died as a direct consequence of his actions... anyway. I think people will be afraid for a while, the cruise line will lose money and will be a dent in their reputation, but I don't see it affecting the industry like permanently or even making a dent in other cruise lines pockets.
