Yes, generally we don't mind if they jump on the bed. Oddly, we don't let them jump on the sofa. Weird.

Yes! The amount of exercise and entertainment they've gotten from it is worth it in terms of damage to the mattress...

Yes, within reason. Life's too short to cut out innocent fun like that. Only allowed while being supervised by mom or dad, I recognize it is dangerous.

No! My kids, 2 and 4 at the time, were jumping on my bed while I was showering. My son came in and yelled Gracie's screaming. I got out and she was screaming/crying. I asked what happened and at first they wouldn't tell me but as the day went on, she kept telling me her arm hurts. The next morning I took her in, they xray'd and said it was cracked. So she had her pink cast on for 6 weeks. No fun.
BTW...whenever we read the book Five Little Monkey's now, she ALWAYS has to bring that up..."Remember When...."

Hmmm... I'm a bit of a meany. My kid brother needed stitches when he cracked his forehead open on the corner of his dresser when he fell off his bed while jumping. My eldest daughter was jumping on her bed when she was around 3 years old and she fell and hit her head, and luckily didn't need stitches and didn't get a concussion. Two years ago she was dancing on the table in the dining room (I didn't know this... she was dancing while I was making pancakes and in between me peeking in on her she jumped up on the heavy table) and she danced right off and landed head first needing stitches.

So in our house, the rules is that there's no jumping on the beds unless I'm there. My 8 year old has Autism, so sometimes she does need the bouncing (like she gets at school on a mini trampoline for sensory break) but she has to hold my hand when she does it and we count to ten. Sometimes she asks for "ten then bed" at bed time.

We just take head injuries very seriously. We have to with seizure disorder running on my husband's side of the family and my 8 year old having seizure disorder already. Head injuries with someone who has a couple of neurological disorders is just asking for trouble.

No and not on the rest of the furniture either. If they jump on the bed, you can bet they will jump on the couch and the chairs and worst of all probably at someone else's house!

I like the trampoline for the little jumpers.

No, we have a bed with air chambers.

Two friends were told by salesmen that they should let their kids jump on their new mattresses to break the foam in. This is nuts to me because they will think it is ok to jump on others beds.

Not meaning to freak out those that do let their children jump but a family friend let her son (6) jump on his bed. He went into his sisters room (they had bunk beds) and was jumping around on the top bed, fell off and landed on a pool cue. It went in his neck under his jaw and out the top other side of his head. Sadly he died 5 days later :-(.......
I got my children a trampoline that they are supervised on..... I don't yell if I catch them jumping but I do make them sit or get down.

No. My cousin and I were jumping on my Grandma's bed when we were little and broke the bed.

I found it amusing reading the responses, especially the one who said whoever heard of a breaking a bed. Well, we did. Yes there is the whole danger of falling off and getting hurt. Just think of what it does to the frame of the bed. Nothing is made to last anymore, so I am sure there is a better chance of one breaking now more so than when I was a kid.

Nope. But they've tried to do it anyway.
We have a broken slat on our bed frame from them doing it anyway and they've knocked down some fragile things (thankfully they fell onto the bed). Did they ever get into trouble for that!! My oldest thought to jump from a bookcase onto a bed..broke his ankle. The broken ankle seems to have cured them from jumping on the bed. Ruined a whole lot the 2 months it was on (it was or course raining the whole time he had it!), son delveloped an allergy and rash to the cast..a whole mess "fun".

I have to let our 4 year old jump. He has sensory integration issues and bouncing helps him get centered. I also agree that the room should be safer than normal.

We are trying to save money to buy an indoor trampoline with a safety had rail on it for him to jump on.

My friend lost her elementary son to a bunk bed fall too. He wan't even doing anything wrong. No roughhousing or wrestling, nothing.

I think it's fun to jump, just make sure he can't fall on anything dangerous. His room should be baby proof/kid proof.

I used to, but now my 3yo son has a loft bed and my 6yo daughter has bunk beds, the spare room bed frame is over 100 years old (family Heirloom) and my bed is new (my dream come true :)), so no they don't jump on the beds anymore.

Kids love to jump on the bed, as long as the bed is sturdy and they are smaller I would say go for it!!!

Not a good habit to get into, but on occasion while they were helping me make my bed, I would let them jump for a minute or two for that rush of doing something you arent supposed to do.
I had a two year old tenant fall out of a 3rd story window here a couple of years ago while mom was letting him jump on the bed... he went right through the screen, bounced off of a landing and hit the grass. Luckily he was okay, but jumping on the bed should be taboo in most cases, it's just too easy for them to break them selves for something else in the room. Besides, they then think it's cool to jump on someone elses bed, and you sure dont want them doing that when you are visiting someone, would you?

Yes. But my daughter and I sleep in bunk beds, so not much room for jumping! She sometimes uses the crossbars under the top bed to do somersaults, though, so maybe that counts.

No jumping on the livingroom furniture though, it's so cheap it would collapse!

answers from Pocatello on

Nope.. she tries.. but our two year old is not allowed to jump on the bed. But I do think jumping is an awesome way for her to expend that pent up energy, so we bought her a little trampoline that has a handrail on it to jump on. So if she really wants to, she can jump on that! Someday when she is older we may get a big size family trampoline for the yard.... but that would be in a few years when she is old enough to understand safety instructions better. Plus, I love jumping on big trampolines!

but beds and mattresses (and kids) can get damaged too easily by jumping on beds. plus I don't want it to be a habit that we have to break with her. I have known a lot of kids who have gotten hurt but jumping on the bed. My daughter knows of at least five little monkeys who did! hehehe!

No I do not. My husband does, though, so I tell the kids they can only do it with daddy around. That way, if they have to go to the er because they fall off, he's going to be the one to take them!

That said, he only lets 1 jump at a time and really does stand right there to catch them if anything happens - our beds are the ikea version, super low to the ground. And he covers the corners with pillows. But I'm too paranoid that something will still happen to allow it when my husband isn't around.

I did. Until my youngest, fell hit the back of his head. Started bleeding. didnt care, went back to jumping fell again, busted open his eyebrow which apparently hurt way more the the back of his head. Came runny out to me in the back yard. I almost past out from the amount of blood on him. What was harder was we had to take him to the ER. Explaining to them that he fell twice before finding me was hard. they looked at me like I was nuts. They dont understand he is a kid made out of steel, lead and a bit of titanium.

I was sure we would have CPS knocking on our door the next day. Thank god, that was not the case!

Never again! I have learned my lesson the scary way. So, my kids pay the price in time outs and loss of their special stuff if I catch them jumping. It only took like the first two times for them to understand I was dead serious!!

Heck Yes! But only if I was there with her. I cannot believe how many kids have hurt themselves. Our daughter had a queen sized bed.. maybe that kept her safe?

I remember when my husband and I purchased our first sofa and jumped on it the first day we had it.. We promised each other we would allow our child to jump on it if she ever asked.. Funny she never asked to jump on the sofa, just the bed! !
