Is that what its called? The smoking machine thing? I have a Facebook "friend" that has invited me to several of her parties at her home. We have "alot" in common, mostly being BBW's, her and her hubby got married on our first anniv and they are a blended family as well. So we have not gotten together other than I met her briefly in a parking lot to pick up some candles I ordered from her. They live about a 45-60 min drive from us.
So anyway, I was looking at her pics on FB and they are smoking from a Hookah. What is it exactly? Is it tobacco? Do you get a high from it? Is it legal? Hubby and I are kind of conservative, not really into "partying", don't drink, etc. But not opposed to anyone else doing that as long as they are responsible about it. Anyway, just wondering about this activity they seem to do often.
The pictures are from their parties, so there are a lot of adults sitting in a circle with the hookah in the middle. Hhhhmmmm, I think I will probably pass as it doesn't seem something we would participate in (no matter WHAT is in it). Thanks mamas!!! =)
Haha I second Eve - the only hookah I had was in college and we definitely were not smoking tobacco in it - lol.

I have a friend who is an older lady who just came back from visiting the Middle East. She brought back a hookah. She's going to use it for flavoured tobacco, but she doesn't even smoke. I don't understand! Why would you smoke through a hookah if you didn't otherwise smoke?

A hookah (also called a water pipe) is a device for smoking in which the smoke is cooled by water.
Whether you get high or not depends on what you burn in it, tobacco vs pot.
The Mayo Clinic says smoking tobacco through a hookah is as dangerous as smoking cigarettes.
The only time I've ever used a hookah was in high school when I ran with the "bad kids" and I can say that it was not tobacco in there! Never heard of adults have a hookah party, but I can't imagine wanting to smoke tobacco like that! Might want to steer clear of this party!

It's supposed to be just tobacco or other smoke-able herbs like ground cloves. I've personally never tried one because I hate smoking anything. But yes it's legal unless someone decides to put pot in there instead! The device itself is legal.
My husband's work Holiday party had a Middle Eastern theme last year, complete with belly dancers and a hookah lounge. I'm very conservative and don't smoke or drink and never have, but I tried a couple puffs of the hookah to see what it was all about. I didn't really know what was in it, but since it was a work party I felt pretty safe that I wasn't going to get high. And I didn't. It just tasted like flavored smoke. I didn't really get the point, especially if it's unhealthy for you and has tobacco in it. Why would I smoke that if I would NEVER touch cigarettes in real life? I don't even hardly drink soda or eat chips since I want to take care of my body. So it doesn't appeal at all to me. And looking back I don't know why I even tried it. If someone was passing around a cigarette I would never take a puff. It just kind of seemed like a bunch of adults trying to be cool. My husband's work parties often seem reminiscent of a frat party. They have a very fun culture, but probably not the best fit for us since we're conservative.
It's either the Middle Eastern type of custom, using the flavored tobacco that was described very well in other posts, or pot. In which many of my idiot high school friends did the latter. In any case, if you don't smoke, I wouldn't smoke from a hookah either. Really, sitting around in a room taking hits off of the pipes in a yucky smoke filled room is just kind of really yucky in my opinion.

I recently read an article in the newspaper about these. Someone had written in asking about them becaue they seem to becoming more popular among the college age crowd and thought they were a healthier way to smoke. The tabacco passes through water and into the pipes. It is commonly a flavored tobacco. People mistakenly think that it is a "healthier" way to smoke. It is not. Actually it is more concentrated and worse for you. Why would you do it then? I think people really don't understand the risks involved. It is still smoking, only worse.
No, but unfortunately my 20-year-old son does. As long as he is going to college on our dime there won't be pot in it though.

It is usually used with tobacco, but I guess you could use it for pot. My youngest sister has one (she is 27). I have asked her what exactly she uses with it and she gets a special tobacco that is made for it. She says she doesn't get high and she has never done anything that would lead me to believe she was. I think this is a popular thing in the middle east and/or India.
