M.S.
In order for there to be 3 sacs, there had to have been 3 babies. Most likely, the other two stopped developing and died, but since it is so early, I wouldn't completely rule out your "hiding" theory.
So we just came home form an early (5 1/2 weeks) ultrasound to find that I am carrying three amniotic sacs but only one has a baby with a heart beat in it! The other two sacs appear to be empty. Dr. says this happens quite often that most likely the empty sacs will be absorbed by my body, but we can't help but wonder if when I go back for my 8 week ultrasound if suddenly there will be three babies and the other two were just "hiding"!! Has this happened to anyone else???

Hi N.,
I don't have an answer for you but you might try googling the condition or going to WebMD and see what information you can get that way. I've heard that this condition sometimes happens, but I can't tell you what the outcome usually is. Good luck!
When I was 8 weeks pregnant I did an ultrasound on myself at the veterinary clinic I worked at and saw one obvious baby and what appeared to be another sac. I wasn't able to see anything in it at the time but when I looked a week later there was a heartbeat. I now have 4 year old twins. I've never been officially trained in ultrasonography, I was just messing around, but I'm sure it's possible for mistakes to happen. Good luck!
I had the same thing happen with my last pregnancy. It's called a vanishing twin. We went back a few weeks later for another US and the sac was still there and still no baby. I had mixed feelings about it. The thought of multiples was exciting but stressful. I found comfort in knowing that I had atleast one healthy baby growing. They say that most pregnancies start out as multiples, as many as 1 in 4, but only one baby continues to develope past a certain point. no matter what I wish you a happy and healthy pregnancy
