Do My Babies Sleep Too Much?

I know you probably think I'm crazy, but I feel like my 4 month olds are always sleepy! They sleep approx. 12 hours at night (I'm down to one feeding in the middle of this). And then they sleep about an hour before each feeding during the day. This equates to, like, 18 hours of sleep per day. I try to play with them as much as possible in between, but eventually they get fussy and tired. Am I doing okay???

What can I do next?

Thank you so much for all of your responses. I feel so much better now. I just need reassurance every once in awhile. =)

Babys normally need 16 hours of sleep per day or more. So you are doing fine. When my babies were that little i felt like they were never awake. Use your time now to get some extra z's yourself. For the time for crazynesss is comeing.
Congrats on your twins!!
Take care!

A. they are doing great! I have twin boys and they did the exact same thing. In fact they will be 7 months old in a couple of days and they sleep 12 hours at night and take three 1 to 2 hour naps a day. Let them sleep they are growing and developing!

hi A.,
i worried about this exact thing with my now 9 month old. she still is a pretty big sleeper. THANK GOD! i know some 9 month olds are down to one nap a day. i am thankful for her two sometimes 3 naps she still takes. just today i felt the worrying begin. i let it pass with the trust and faith that my daughter is doing exactly what she needs for her own personal development. all babies are different. it's funny, when she was just a couple months old, i didn't know any better. i tried to 'stimulate' her and rouse her! i feel bad now looking back. i thought she was sleeping too much! always learning.....right?

Let them sleep! Soon enough they will be up all day and you will be asking where did your sleepy babies go.

I remember being concerned about the same thing with my oldest. She was a REALLY sleepy baby. I had her on a 3-4 hour feeding schedule, and she LOVED it. She would sleep all night and then wake and sleep for a few more hours, and then have 2 solid naps during the day and more if we put her in the car or stroller! I was constantly told by my inlaws to wake her up and not to let her sleep so much and how it isn't healthy. I trusted my instincts and just kept to the schedule (even if I had to wake her for her feedings) and she is now going to be 9 and is a GREAT sleeper. She is also very intelligent, which they have tied to good sleeping habits. Don't worry too much about it, and just stick to your planned day. Babies don't really need as much awake time as you'd think, since their brains are doing a lot of learning and growing and that is exhausting to the little bugs. As long as they get the appropriately timed feedings and SOME awake time, they are good to go. And this is a totally random thought, but I believe I read that preemies sleep MORE then usual, making up for the time lost in the womb, so if they were early at all, they may be a factor. My daughter was 2 weeks early, but I don't know if this is just hearsay or not. Good luck and congratulations on your little babies!

My son is 5 now and he still sleeps 12 hours at night. They have a lot of growing to do and need the rest. It's perfectly normal.

Hi A., back in the day when i had my babies, they slept a lot, I am amazed that they sleep at the same time, there's mama's out there that would probably love to trade places with you. I would talk to their ped and see what he/she says, I do know babies sleep alot when they are going through a growth spurt. Do they smile and play, and how much do they eat at one feeding? I don't see anything you are doing wrong with what you explained, if it bothers you this much talk their ped,and get some peace of mind. But sleeping babies mean growing babies. J.

A., you are doing a great job! You don't need to worry, babies sleep a lot. They need their sleep cause that is when they grow. My son is a little over 2 and he sleeps almost 12 hours at night and he takes a 2 hour nap during the day and when he was your children's age he sleep as much as your kids did! Take care and God Bless!

I agree with the others, that babies sleep a lot and you will see their sleep patterns change, so just go with it and enjoy your quiet time! :)

A., I bet everyone is telling you to thank your lucky stars girl! Actually, babies do sleep alot. My little guy started sleeping great once the nighttime feedings were cut-out too. As long as they have a big feeding at bed-time I'd say you're fine. Enjoy it now, once they start walking, you're gonna miss this sleepy time....I remember the happy day, or should I say morning I woke-up after a long night's rest! Good for you!

I was going through the same thing when my son was about the same age.He would sleep long nights and take alot of naps through out the day. Now he is seven months and he has regular sleeping patterns. Dont worry some babys just like to sllep a little more than other's. I would take this time that you have a but it to some good use because it wont be like this for long.

A.,
I see that you have had a lot of posts that are encouraging - and I would reiterate what they are all saying that you should count your blessings on their sleep patterns right now - they will probably change in the future to needing less sleep. I was also wondering if they were a little premature? Even three to four weeks premature will require them to sleep more to "catch up" for the time lost inutero. Congrats on your little ones!
