Do I Need a Hepatitis B Immunization?

I am preparing to get pregnant and wonder how important you think it is to get a Hepatitis B vaccination series before, during or after my pregnancy. It takes three months and we're eager to conceive now. I had bloodwork done as part of an overall physical and it showed I have no immunity to Hepatitis B. My doctor says that unless I am in a high-risk population, it is not essential to get the vaccination. I'm not in a high-risk population. But wouldn't it be safer for the baby if I get my body immune to Hepatitis B before conception, just in case? At the same time, I realize that for centuries women have been having babies without worrying about this type of thing.

What can I do next?

No. I would not get it. This is a fairly new immunization anyway, and I think the hype is bigger then the risk.
Even your doc says it is fine not to have it.

you are right, you DON"T need it. your risk is low. cont. good hand washing technique will keep your risk low too. if you want to protect you and your baby espec. this time of year, then i highly recommend the flu shot, as your doctor should too. good luck.

Hi,
I'm completely against ANY vaccinations after doing a lot of research into what they contain. You of course have to make your own decision, but I would highly suggest you look into the information out there on this subject. There have been many books written on the issue. Good luck!

I would say that you don't need to be vaccinated prior to your pregnancy,(unless you are high risk like a healthcare worker), the baby will get it's first Hep B shot before it leaves the hospital, in most cases. I would reccomend that you get the series after the baby is born.

Hep B is designed to protect IV drug users and other's like that....babies aren't effected by that and the only reason they give Hep B shots to babies is "in case" the mother has Hep B. If your blood work shows you don't have it, just repeat the blood work throughout the pregnancy. It's unlikely you'll get it. And, if your dr doesn't advise you to get it, then i wouldn't. We over tax our systems with so many chemicals and toxins that if it's not necessary, then don't do it, in my opinion...

I have two beautiful healthy children and I NEVER got the hepatitis B shot. So I really don't feel it's neccessary but you have to do what you want... I'm sure whatever you decide will be right for you... good luck with everything!!!
