I don't know about the tip, but agree with the other posters about completely covering gray. You can't do it with highlights. To completely cover every strand of gray, you have to dye all the hair and then you can go back and add highlights.
I went in to a salon where I had not been before. I specifically told him that I was getting some grey so I wanted hi-lights to cover it up. I have very dark hair. I told him that I wanted to avoid any orange tint as I have had that happen in the past. I showed him the shade I wanted from the hair samples. When he finished, I literally could not see the hi-lights at all. He had me go over to t he window so that i would notice them in the sunlight. I told him that it wasn't what I wanted. He told me to give it a couple of days, and that if I didn't like it I could come back and he would change it at no charge. The service was $90, and I tipped him $10.
It really is not what I want. No one, including my own daughters who notice everything, noticed a thing. I'm going back in to get it lighter (it did absolutely nothing to camoflauge the grey- the whole purpose of the service). So now I have to inconvenience myself for another 2+ hours. I know I am also taking his chair time though. Do I need to tip?
Edit: I went in for hilights-not color. I have very, very little grey. I literally have 10 hairs or so in one spot near my crown. I do not have overall grey, and I didn't want to keep plucking from the same spot. It was actually suggested to me by another hair dresser to get hilights to camoflauge the grey since I definetely do not need overall color.
I went back today. He had the owner come over and consult. The hi-lights are very visible now and do a great job at camoflauging the grey spot. I left him a $5 tip.

I got my hair colored by a girl who normally does it (for over a year) and couldn't tell the difference either! She kept telling me - 'it's just the lighting, wait till you're in new light' and I still couldn't see it. Ended up using a box this go round - which I haven't done in a long time. But I like it better, and it cost less!
It's funny how her not applying the color what I wanted, ended up losing her business...
I say, no tip!
I would tip. Saying you want to highlight to cover the grey and getting much lighter highlights are two different things maybe he was worried about going to light as you had said you didn't want it to go to the orange color. He is fixing it for free. you get to sit in a chair and be pampered for another 2 hours for free. tip him and if you don't like it this time ask for the manager. but make sure he totally gets what your looking for. sounds to me like it really didn't totally understand
Yes, he is kind enough to redo the entire process at no cost to you. Someone else could be in his chair paying a full price.
Of course you tip him.......... he is trying to make you happy.
My daughter got highlights last year and she was unhappy. Her stylist did nothing wrong.... daughter just hated it and wanted it more noticeable. She redid everything and I did leave a tip for her, around $25.
My traditional tip is 20%.
I realize I am in the minority here but he is trying to make a living and there was an obvious miscommunication ON BOTH SIDES.. I would be gracious that he offered to re-do at no charge and then tip appropriately.
I never heard of getting highlights to cover grey. He might have misunderstood you and did your roots with the same color as your hair. And you have to watch with highlights on very dark hair-they don't always look very good. Maybe bring a picture in to show him what you had in mind.
IMO you should give some type of tip. Even if it's only $5.
Well this is a two part question.
First for a service redo of serious error you do not have to tip at all. You might want to if you think he will be your regular hairdresser for goodwill purposes.
The second part is that no way will highlighting fully cover your gray. Just not going to happen at all. So i do not see how you will ever be happy in terms of gray coverage. Highlights should create a nice halo around the face effect not be seen like crayon work in your head from a block away.
I would go and get the highlights redone understanding it will not give you full gray coverage.
Absolutely not! You told him what you wanted, you told him you weren't happy with what you ultimately got... in fact, he should refund all of your money and fix it for free.
No you already did. Its not your fault he has to do it again. He should have left it in longer or done bigger pieces.
I would say no. You have tipped him already. He is now fixing a mistake.
I don't think so. I wouldn't go back again.
Nope. He didn't do what he was supposed to in the first place. I would not have tipped him the first time and tipping him a second time would not even enter into my thoughts!! :)
I wouldnt tip him no. He didnt do it the way you wanted and asked for, so nope he wouldnt be getting a tip from me. I think its nice of you to have gave him a tip in the first place.
He probably is not going to refund your money if he fixes it, but I don't think you need to pay again OR tip when he "fixes it, IF you want him to fix it.
I don't think you should tip. But I wouldn't go back either. You told him what you wanted, even showed him the color, and he didn't get it right. Then you said you didn't like it, and he brushed you off. I'd find someone else.
I don't think you have to tip for fixing a service. I usually use Natural Instincts haircolor, but I treated myself to a salon color. I honestly didn't see a difference and the price is much cheaper to do it yourself. And it's not that annoying to do it myself either :)
I am finally getting more grey hair and love it. I always did highlights/frosting on my hair to make it more blended looking. It always looks wonderful.
Your hair should have been put under a cap that fits tightly against the scalp. It should have tiny holes in it that a hook is used to pull small amounts of hair through the holes. The hair outside the cap is treated with a lighter color and then after the processing is finished it is rinsed very well. After the lighter colored processor is rinsed off then the cap can be removed and the hair washed and styled.
The more holes used or the more hair/bigger chunks pulled through results in a lighter overall look. If you just wanted a few highlights there are other ways of doing the hair that don't use a cap but foil instead.
I like the idea of putting more streaks in your hair to minimize the grey streak.
I would have someone else do it at the salon. He should have fixed it while you were there, not asked you to come back. You didn't like it then, why would you like it 2 days later when its not what you asked for?? Ask for the salon manager and have THEM do it for you -free of charge and No you don't have to tip.
M
no, I don't think yo should have to tip- just go back and get it lightened. Try not to leave until it is satisfactory.
He may be a great hairdresser, but he obviously doesn't understand what you are saying. In the future... go somewhere else. I personally find that the best hairdressers for me have hair like mine... I have super fine, ultra straight, "mousy" brown hair. I look for hairdressers with fine, naturally straight hair.
Maybe you can have better luck with a hairdresser who specializes in your type of hair.
Be courteous, but don't come back.
Good Luck
