I know Fords are great cars, but the car is 12 years old and that is A LOT of miles!!!! It might be a nice ride but you have to think about how long you will have it versus how much money you are spending on it. If it's a lot of money to you then I wouldn't get it. Maybe get something a little newer with less miles.

I had a 1999 Explorer Eddie Bauer (same car). I loved it. Unfortuanalty I totaled it in a roll over in 2005, this was the body style that was prone to rollovers. Even the cops and firemen at the scene could not believe how well the car held up and that I only had scrapes and bruises. It was one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. After the wreck I bought a 2002 Explorer, first year with restyled body with 93,000 miles and just traded it off with 170,000 miles and no major mechanical issues just brakes ect. I would take it to your favorite mechanic and have them check it out throughly. It ususally costs about $80 to $100 to do this but at least you will know if there are any major issues with the car. As far as the gas mileage is concerened both of mine had the big V8 5.0 liter engine and I got 20 mpg highway and 17 mpg city. not bad if you ask me, I think the V6's get even better mileage. Also take in to consideration that Ford will be droping the Mercury line and some parts might not be available after a few years. Ford has made great strides in qualtiy, saftey and MPG, in fact many of their cars have the same MPG rateing and many of their forigen counterparts.

I don't own one but I hesitate at the thought of buying a 12 year old car with almost 150,000 miles on it. I hope you aren't paying a lot for this car. I HAD a 99 car with around the same mileage and felt it was time for a new car. I wouldn't have bought it, and frankly, am surprised someone did. Only got 600 for it, and it was in decent condition and ran well.

How long do you want to have the car? I would think twice about buying such an old car with so many miles on it. It just sounds like an episode of People's Court when the car suddenly stops working after a few months. My sister has an Explorer (same car) around the same age, and with in the last year she's dumped a bunch of money trying to maintain it. It needed all new brakes and regular old car maintainance. She is going to try to sell it once her husband decides on a new car that he wants. It maybe gets 13 mpg city driving, and with gas prices and a 21 gallon tank you are going to be spending a fortune on gas.

I had a Mercury Topaz a long time ago and it was a lemon. I swore when I finally got rid of that thing, I'd never drive a Ford or Mercury again.

We drives Mercedes, exclusively. Good, solid, safe car.

That's a lot of miles. Is it a one owner vehicle and have they had the oil changed regularly since day one? It could run well for awhile, but I'd be pretty leery and wouldnt want to pay more than 1500 bucks for a vehicle with that many miles on it, seriously.

I've never even seen one, but you should be able to find the gas mileage for them online. Gas mileage will depend on a few things. Engine size, size of the actual vehicle, whether it's an all wheel/4 wheel drive or not.

In general:

Bigger engine = less miles per gallon
4 Wheel drive = less miles per gallon
Larger body size = less miles per gallon.

And of course city driving versus highway driving. Good luck with the decision. We keep looking at different SUV's for me and haven't been able to make a decision yet :)

My mom had an 02 for a while and my younger sister drove it once she had her baby. It was a good car, but had a decent amount of problems with it. Do they even make them anymore? I would not WANT to buy a car that old with that many miles on it, but if it is really cheap (or close to free) and it's what you can do right now, it should be an okay car. The gas in that was not too bad, maybe 18mpg...that's considering I currently get 13.6 MPG in my Aramda.

Ford vehicles are top notch…that's why this one is still running at 143,000 miles. Having said that, I would not buy a car with that many miles on it. It's bound to have issues soon. Ford has done nothing but improve their fuel efficiency in all their vehicles, so if there is any way you can get something newer and with less miles, I would. How about leasing a new Focus or Fusion? Their prices are LOW and they are really nice, safe cars. I personally drive a Ford Flex and L. it! My husband just leased a new Fusion and it's awesome. We still have his Ford F-150 that is 7-8 years old that is in awesome condition and runs great.

I would stay away from this SUV, but stick on the Ford track! It will take you far!!

I used to have one that was a 98 model. I liked it. It was a little bumpy, but it is a truck, so that's expected. Back then (I had it in 2003) I didn't really pay attention to gas prices or anything because it wasn't a big deal back then. But, that is a lot of miles and I wouldn't want to buy any car with that many miles on it. Before you buy it, get it checked out by a mechanic that you know and trust.
