I got a really cute photo card in the mail yesterday. My friend had her son, wearing a Santa hat, standing in a sweater & jeans by their lamp post. Hands in pockets, fisherman sweater....very casual but super cute!
I want to take some pictures of my kids for Christmas. It's not for a card, it's just to have them. The last few years I've either dressed them up and took pics, or put them in Christmas Pj's and sat them by the tree. I'm sure there are tons of fun creative ideas out htere, but I just can't think of any. I did see someone turn all of the lights off and plug in a strand of lights and have the kids put their faces behind it. That was cute too. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I took my son to a local historical home. The whole property was decorated beautifully and just took pictures of him exploring. We got some great ones of him by the tree, by the sleigh, standing by the Nutcracker. Cute, but not super posed.
If you haven't already, check out Pinterest (www.pinterest.com) and type in what you are looking for. Even if you don't have an account you can get lots of ideas. I've gotten TONS for all sorts of things there. Also, maybe you can go somewhere in your community that has nice decorations. One of our local, family-owned nurseries has beautiful decorations this time of year and they welcome families to come take pictures there. Of course they hope you buy something but don't mind if you don't. Also in our town square they have a giant Christmas tree, toy soldiers, Santa (giant figurine) sitting on a bench. Not sure if you have something like that near you but it is a great photo op spot.
It you are happy to have something a little more impromptu, take pictures of their faces as they open their presents. The look of delight when they get "the gift" they've been after, can be awesome.
another thought, how about a dab of lipstick on their noses, and hands above their heads like antlers.
hats made of bows & ribbons (think baby shower/ bridal shower style).
I'd say with snowballs, but you are in texas.
Good luck to you and yours

How many kids?
We just received a Christmas card from friends who've recently moved away. They have 5 kids. It is a GREAT picture! It is sepia, with Mom and Dad kissing while each holding one of the youngest kids (mom has the youngest girl on her outside hip, Dad has the only and youngest child, boy, dangling by one leg upside down!), the oldest child is bending from the waist with the next oldest flipped up on her back (you know how when we were kids we would stand back to back, link arms, then one would bend over?)... and the middle child is squatting in front with "touchdown" arms. It is GREAT! And they are all laughing so hard (except mom and dad who are kissing thru the chaos)... LOVE it.
Maybe something "crazy" like that??
Along the lines of Krista Ps suggestion, visit a big hotel like Omni, Hilton, or the Continental if you live close by. Their lobbies always have elaborate decorations over Christmas...well, even the smaller hotels have awesome lobby decorations. One year one of the hotels even had a gingerbread house display. I know the Ritz Carlton in NOLA last year had a Polar Express exhibit as well as an 8 story Christmas tree outside.
We always dress up the pets and have the kids (two - boy and girl) sit with them by the tree....lots of dogs and cate....this year it will take two pics I think...it is fun and great remembrance of all!
THis was the year my Ds got braces and my DD 's front teeth had fallen out. They asked to wear their santa hats and i gave them candy canes and just took some fun shots of them licking their candy canes. Doesn't sound so cute when i say it but it was.
Family fun.com has some cute trick photos you can do. like dangling a gingerbread man close to the camera and having the kids in the back ground so it looks like the gingerbread man is the same size as the kids.
What about having them pop out of a present?
I just took my kids and my sisters kids to a local greenhouse that decorates for Christmas and has all the pretty Christmas plants & wreaths and took some pictures there. They turned out so great!
One of my favorites came from a friend with four girls. They all had on jeans, black turtle necks and solid bright pink scarves. They looked adorable. You could do the something similar even if you had a boy- have the girls in scarves and the boys in the exact same color of stocking caps.
Lots of fun ideas listed so far- good luck!
i saw a picture of 2 kids wrapped up in lights next to an opened gift box
