Disposable Breast Pads

How frequently should a breast pad be switched? I am assuming it has to do with personal comfort but did not want to be doing something unsanitary or that may lead to infection...etc.

What can I do next?

I usually changed mine after each feeding unless they were soaked earlier. That was for the first month or two, after that I really didn't need them as the leakage was rare. My sister-in-law had problems with thrush (yeast infection) on her nipples from not changing them frequently enough.

when they start to feel wet and uncomfortable, change them. don't worry, they won't leak forever! eventually, your body will know exactly how much to make and you may not have to wear breast pads at all. good luck!

Great to hear you're breast feeding, that's wonderful!! Like with so many things, every woman is different. One of my girlfriends & I had our babies within weeks of each other. We were both home with our babies full time and nursed till our babies were 12-14 months old. I leaked constantly, she leaked very little. We changed the pads when they got wet, which was often for me, not for her. We used washable pads. That way, you're doing what's best for baby & helping save the environment too! Every little bit helps!

Basically anytime they are wet. Look in to LilyPadz. They keep you from leaking in the first place:)

Technically they should be changed once they get wet because the moist dark area is a breeding ground for bacteria and will cause thrush trust me been there done it...its painful and really itchy...I just started changing them once i could feel they were wet and then cleaning the area before putting another one on and it worked for me...really its up to you.

I preferred the washable kind, I changed then before they got too soaked, I would say that would be the same for the disposable ones. Perhaps even change then as often as you would change a tampon. I know that sounds gross, but neither should stay too long and should definetly be changed before they are totally soaked.

I changed mine everytime that they felt wet or uncomfortable and I made sure to put a new one on after each feeding. If not, I would get sore and crack and then it was even more painful when my kids nursed! I also tried to make sure that I cleaned my nipples before and after each feeding (if I was in a very private location). I think that the disposable ones are the best because you can use them and throw them away. I wasn't too sure about ones you can wash and reuse because of the laundry detergent and such and not to mention that you wash them with other laundry. Up to you though. Good Luck!

i always changed mine at least every 2 hours or when it became saturated & started to stick or chafe my skin between the 2 hours. i have really sensitive skin & the slightest thing sets off redness, itching, you name it.

Change them when they're wet. I leaked like a faucet and had to change mine almost every hour. If I didn't, I would leak right through. If you notice they feel wet or damp, change them. A dark, moist environment is a great place for bacteria to grow.

I use the Lansinoh ones and I usually only put new ones in my bra in the morning. I don't find myself leaking too often though, mostly because I am ALWAYS with the baby. Now if we go away for a while, I can say that they do hold up for quite some time if needed. I have read that you are supposed to change them with each feeding to avoid infection. Not sure how valid that is since breastmilk has so many healing qualities, but I don't find it necessary.

I changed when they were wet and uncomfortable. I actually did not us the store bought pads. I leaked too bad. I put wash clothes in my bra that were cut in half and folded into thirds. I rarely leaked then. I never thought about the possibilty of infection. Because I washed before every feeding when I could. I would think your OB wold really be the person to ask or the breast feeding group. I don't know how to spell the groups name. La or Le something.

L.,

I usually left mine in all day unless one got soiled, then I changed it - I always made sure I kept a couple extra in the pump bag or my purse. I nursed for 10mo-1yr with both of mine and never had any problems with infection.

Good Luck!

I change them when I take showers. It all depends on how badly you leak. I didn't leak that bad, so I didn't need to change as often. I would throw them away every time I showered regardless of how soaked they were (even if they were completely dry).

God bless,
A.

I think it really depends on how much you are leaking. I don't leak but wear them anyway just for comfort to prevent rubbing so I only change mine every 24 hours. I use the gerber reusable ones I have found they are the best. If you are leaking I would change them whenever they get damp otherwise you could end up with a yeast infection.

I change mine frequently. If I notice they're wet or have breastmilk on them, I change them. But I tend to not use disposable ones. Cloth is a better choice.
