we usually book thru disney themselves. they have their own travel people and can coordinate travel from the airport (for car seats) etc to the hotel. with a child that young, i would try to stay at a hotel on the monorail if you can because if he/she gets tired, its easy to jump on it to head back to your hotel and those hotels have special early admittance days (as do some others). one tip - any of the really popular restaurants (like cinderellas castle), call now and make your reservation for next year as those fill up very quickly and you cant just walk up and want to eat there. at the castle - ask for a table by the window - the best seats in the house.
PLEASE please please go to this web site: http://www.touringplans.com and order their book ("The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2010).
As a Floridian it is my absolute FAVORITE book for how to do Disney (and other parks in Orlando).
You can spend thousands of dollars and end up with a miserable child/family if you're not careful. Not to mention, I have found October to be a very busy month in Orlando (lots of Europeans then for some reason). Other than the somewhat surprising crowds it is a beautiful time to go.
Good luck and hope you guys make lots of magical memories!
PS: Mousesavers.com is my second favorite web site!!
I've planned all of our 8 trips to Disney. Personally, I like to go directly to the Disney site to book events, tickets, hotel, etc. I also book airline reservations directly with the airline website. I don't go through discounters, travel agents or anything like that, ever.
That said, I have a lot of practice with travle planning because we run our own company and I manage all the personal and business travel. So, I am quite comfortable navigating through all that info.
We've always stayed at the Polynesian which in on the monorail line. It is one of our favorite places to stay ever. They have a great character breakfast in the O'Hana restaurant and the Luau is very nice as well. It is super easy access to MK by monorail or the boat taxi. It is pretty expensive, but well worth it to us. Our favorite was in the Concierge building and there are extra perks for those rooms. We got a private safari in Animal Kingdom, snacks, fruits and drinks are available 24/7. They have light breakfast foods, lunch, dinner, and dessert.
Book all of your character dining in advance. A 4 yr old would love MK and there is a ton to do there. The 3:00 parade is something not to miss, as well as nightly fireworks. We also enjoyed Animal Kingdom a lot. Epcot was enjoyable for us as well.
As the years went by, we explored more parks as daughter got older.
Enjoy your trip and contact WDW. They will send you a DVD for planning your vacation as well.
This question has been posted several time recently, so if you do a search, you should find a lot of information. Mousesavers.com is a website that people often recommend, it would probably be a good first stop in your research.
Parks for a 4 year old: Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom would be the best, but there are things at all 4 parks that children enjoy.
Have fun!
I'd recommend going to www.disboards.com
It's an all disney forum. There are a lot of great tips on there and lots of education to be had if you have the time and patience for it. The good news is that you've given yourself enough planning room and will be able to have the Disney vacation you want.
