Disney and a 7 Week Old

UPDATE (again): Hi all. Thanks soooo much for the feedback. I did talk to my pediatrician. She is actually ok with me going...she is not too concerned with heat as long as I keep baby covered and in stroller with large shade and obviously nurse a lot. I will spend some time in the hotel as well. She agrees that the Prevnar and Hib is a good idea. I can swing that (although I still dont like doing TWO at once and at 6 weeks but I think I will be a bit more relaxed mentally if I do this). She also told me they now offer DTAP to the mother in the hospital and some of those antibodies will pass thru breastmilk to baby so I can then do DTAP along with others spaced out upon my return. I told her dont tell me what I want to hear, tell me what she thinks and she says she is comfortable. I am also not flying down so that is good. She also told me that she took her 6 week old on a plane not vaxed at all...not that she is recommending that to me but I guess just to let me know not to stress too much. I should also say one more piece of info that I did not state earlier. The reason for trip is that my mother has Stage 4 cancer...although she is doing very well she planned this trip and it means the world to her. Most people would want to go to Hawaii...she wants to take a trip to disney with the grandkids so that is why I am less likely to cancel.....otherwise I probably would have delayed.

***************************
Agreed...no lines and my husband and i will switch on and off. My parents will also be with us and my sister and her family.

UPDATE: I have been to Disney with my younger boys in July and August several times and sounds crazy but does not bother me. I have fans that connect to the strollers (Stroller fans) and the heat has never been an issue. We dont go crazy and rest when we need to. My main concern is the vaccinations. Are there other people that have gone on a trip with a 7 week old that has not had all their vaccines?

*********************

Hi all. I have had a trip planned to Disney for some time in August. I am due in June. The baby will be 7 weeks old in August. I have no problem traveling with an infant...I have with my two other children. My concern is vaccines. I do vaccinate but on a delayed schedule. One vaccine every 2- 3 week starting at 8 weeks.

My understanding is that at 2 months (8 weeks) the following is given BUT can be given as early as 6 weeks.

DTAP- wooping cough
HIB- influenza, meningitis
IPV- Polio
Prevnar- pneumococcal, meningitis
Rotateq- severe diahhrea

What do I give? Do I give anything? I dont want to cancel trip.
I WILL be solely breastfeeding.
The fact that I am possibly giving these vaccines starting at 6 weeks and have to perhaps give more than one freaks me out. I have also however narrowed down some info per research on the cdc.gov and other sites....

DTAP- ONE shot does not protect...they need at least two out of the three and normally it is given at 2, 4, and 6 months. This leads to me to believe that getting one shot would do no good anyway.
Roteq was not introduced until 2006 and introduced into vaccine sched iuntil 2008 so this means my youngest went to the bahamas without it.
IPV is Polio...I think most likely I can delay this one.

So I am thinking of biting bullet and just doing Prevnar and HIB.

We will be taking train down and driving back.

I have course will talk to pediatrician but would like all of your input.

thank you!

What can I do next?

Talk to the Pediatrician.

All I know is... a family here had their 6 month old baby die... because he contracted Pertussis while on a trip, from a relative.
Babies/infants... present different symptoms than adults. And the relative just thought she had a normal cold. It was not.. it was Pertussis.
The baby, had not been vaccinated. The family thought he just had a cold.

This sounds like a nightmare, regardless of the vaccines. Do you want to cook your baby in Florida and lessen the experience of your 3 and 6 year olds? This is if everything goes on schedule and the baby is born on schedule and you recover just fine.

Right now you don't want to reschedule but hopefully you will come to your senses.

I wouldn't worry about vaccines, I would worry about having a 7 week old out in the Florida August heat. Seems a terrible idea to me. I'd be much more concerned about the sun, heat, crowds, etc. You wanted our input, it seems unanimous thus far that a newborn in the summer heat and crowds of an amusement park is not the best thing to do.

Um... taking a seven week old to Disney in the heat and with the crowds... not a smart choice. I know that's really blunt, but maybe you need to hear someone say it. It is really hot in Florida in August; why would you impose that kind of stress on a baby that isn't even two months old?

I think vaccines are the least of your problems.

I delayed vaccines too and support you on that. But if you're looking for your infant to be vaccinated and protected... it's not going to happen at 7 weeks whether you delay or not. So choose to do HIB and Prevnar or don't (personally, I wouldn't. They both have some nasty heavy metals and preservatives).

To be honest I would take someone with me to watch the baby in the hotel room. They will be too small to allow you to enjoy the experience. Your older kids will certainly enjoy mom being there to ride with them and have a lot of fun. I cannot imagine trying to manage a stroller while waiting in lines for rides and then taking the baby on the rides too.

It seems more....nice, to just let the baby have some one watching them and available to take them to the room any time they need a break.

I can't think of anything worse then spending time at Disney in August with a 7 week old...do you know how hot, germy, crowded, noisy, and did I mention HOT it is going to be there?

I work in a school, and I know that in our state at least, if the shots are missed or not within the correct time frame, the shots need to be redone in kindergarten...a major pain for the families I have seen.

I would think twice about going on this trip!

AHH! My palms are sweating. A 7 week old at Disney in August?

I don't think it matters what you do, honestly, I find it odd that you worry about the vaccines and not about the heat and crowds etc. The vaccines are kind of the least of your concern, just do whatever works in that regard if you're insisting on going on the trip.

Edit: I don't think most people in general are concerned for whether the heat bothers YOU or not. People are concerned for a newborn who cannot yet regulate their own body temperature, etc. Again, seems like a way too huge risk for me as a mother expecting a baby as well. If you have all those people going with you why can't you just stay in the hotel with the baby?

L. - I also delay vaccines and I think you'll be just fine. Bring lots of hand sanitizer and carrier. Make sure you're really healthy - extra vitamin c, b and d. Don't do a bunch of extra vaccines because you're scared or pressured. You have 2 kids - you'll know the baby gets sick and what do about it. If you're EBF thats what breastmilk is for!

I noticed a TON of foreigners at Disney. I heard we should not worry because they can't get into America without vaccines, but I don't know if this is true.

Your doc is the best person to answer these questions.
Are you sure you are remembering how exhausted you will be at 7 weeks ?
The breast feeding every 2-3 hours?
Your body still really sore & recovering?

Try to bring help if you can so you can sit out a day or two.

Plus what if something happens, lots of people from all over the world go to Disney. Maybe just go to the beach, does it have to be Disney ?

A newborn out all day in the sweltering August heat of Orlando? Not something I would do. If it was me, I would send the kids with the rest of the family and stay home, or at least, stay in the hotel or condo with the baby. I know you are asking about vaccines, but that wouldn't be my strongest concern about this trip

I visit the parks often living so close and I always see newborns there. I also see a lot of sick kids there too. I personally would not bring a newborn to the parks (anytime of the year). There are visitors there from all over the world and no they do not have to be vaccinated to enter the US.

You need to talk to you ped about what vaccines you can give, ALL vaccines have recommended ages for a reason. I would also be more concerned about the heat, so much time in the sun and mosquito bites than anything else.

Also everyone gets exposed to viruses and bacteria vaccinated or not. NO vaccine is 100% effective for anyone.
