Dishwasher Recommendations - Pittsburgh,PA

So my dishwasher petered out tonight after about 7 years of HARD labor (it was sometimes run 2+ times a day). Even though I know it was used a lot I still think a longevity of 7 years is not enough.

I basically have 3 requirements.

1) It must have a hard food grinder. I'm not prewashing my dishes.

2) I prefer buttons as opposed to the dial.

3) I want to pay the least amount possible and it to last forever ;-)

Okay my 4th requirement is black or the stainless look which is easily cleaned without special stainless cleaner.

Can anyone make a recommendation or tell me what brand is good or which to avoid?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow! I never realized Bosch was so popular! Like Corina pointed out, I learned Bosch never had a food grinder (that's probably why they are so quiet!)

I also learned that Whirlpool discontinued food grinders in 2012 :-( The one store I went to was able to make me a heck of a deal on a 2011 Whirlpool model. (Can you hear Lincoln screaming?) So in the end maybe, just maybe, my dishwasher did me a favor dying when it did.

Unfortunately it had to be ordered so I will be washing dishes another week :-(

I don't know which to buy but I have a suggestion of what NOT to buy. We have a 4 year old dishwasher that died. After some Internet research by both me and a friend who fixes all his own stuff, it seems that the steam from the dishwasher kills the motherboard. It is the kind with the controls on the top edge. Prettier design and great for a home with little ones but horrible design. The repair man (who told me dishwashers should last for 10 years) wanted $400 to replace a $100 part. My friend is going to fix it for me. Hopefully I get a few more years out of it. But, I will NOT buy a dishwasher w/the controls on the top edge. Hard to find in stainless but worth it in the long run. Good luck, hope you find something you are happy with!

Bosch. I will never buy any other brand now that I know how good they are. And I've had a few dishwashers in my time.

Just one piece of advice, as this has happened to both me and my friend. Take a few dishes with you when you're buying to make sure they fit. Don't listen to the sales person about "oh, but everythings ajustable". I have salad bowls that don't fit well on the top rack where they're designed to go, I have to load them a certain way that takes up a lot of room. My friend's plates don't line up correctly on the bottom rack, she has to place them at a weird angle.

I like my new Asko, but they aren't cheap. It washes great! It's not perfect though; it doesn't have a delayed start setting and there isn't enough space for cups and glassware. It washes so well that I put stuff in it I never put in my old KitchenAid. I have found that the lack of a delayed timer isn't really such a big deal--it's so quiet that you can barely tell it's running and it heats its own water so you don't have to worry about using up the hot water if someone wants to shower or something. No rinsing of the dishes required.

I would have said Bosch until last week when I had to pay $240 to repair mine. It needed a new control panel and it was only 6 years old and we really haven't used it much the last couple years since we moved it to our basement kitchen. It is very quite though, I did love it before this problem and all said and done I would buy another.

I hate my Whirlpool Gold. I have to run too many dishes back through or wash them by hand after they are done. There are always bits of ground up food left on some of the dishes - aaahhh! Do you remember the commercial with the angel food cake put in the dishwasher whole and the dishes coming out clean? Yeah, I want that.

Bosch is a very reputable brand. And they are also quiet (bonus!).
When I say quiet, I mean like, under 50 db quiet... mine is going on 6 years old, and I can hear a faint wooshing when the sprayers is going... that's about it. I have opened it a few times when it was running because hubby turned it on and I didn't know it!

And the dishes are clean. We have VERY hard water, so I have to periodically clean that issue, but that would be the case with ANY washer. Mine is not a top of the line ones, either, (like Bridgett B) but it gets the job done. It cost us around $800 when we bought it new, and it is stainless. Shop some different models in the Bosch line online, compare the model numbers and get some quotes.
Good luck.
:)

Love my Bosch, and my parents got one because ours is so great. We have a middle-of the road model, parents' is lower end, both are very good. Not necessarily cheap, but worth it.

I currently have a top of the line Kitchen Aid. LOVE IT I got it at Best Buy about 4 yrs ago.

When we built this house, the builder put in GE Profile... IT SUCKS and we got it out of here ASAP.

We replaced it with the top of the line Maytag which SUCKED. Horrible machine.

That said, I do not prewash my dishes either.

I have Bosch. It is fabulous. We were so impressed with the Bosch that we bought the washer/dryer combo when the washer died. We had a Whirlpool Gold before that and it lasted 4 years. After one year it stopped automatically dispensing soap. When we bought the house, it had a 20 year old Caloric dishwasher that worked great until the heating element died and couldn't be replaced.
