OKay, brace yourselves. My darling 15 month old walks up to me and hands me something, all the while her little mouth is making a motion like she has eaten something disgusting. At first I thought it was chocolate, but yes, it was poo!!!! She got into her garbage before I took it out this morning and pulled it out of her diaper from this morning. I immediately washed her hands and rinsed out her mouth. Im not sure if she swallowed any or just put it in her mouth. Im waiting on her pediatrician to call me back and let me know if it will be alright. Of course, being a first time mother, i get completely freaked out over these things. Anybody else have a little poo eater at home??

What can I do next?

My brother did the same thing when he was a baby. My mom said she couldn't kiss him on the mouth for a month, but he never got sick. She just washed him up and washed out his mouth.

Kid will be kids.

Think about it from another view, dogs are really bad about eating cat poop. But afterwards, they may throw up, but they don't get really sick.

She will be fine and you will have something to tell her when she gets bigger and you can always tell her that at one time in her life, she really was, full of Sh_t!!!!

my son who is now 12 did the same thing, only he was grinning from ear to ear with 'chocolate' drizzle running down both sides of his face. the doctor told me he would be fine unless he starting throwing up. well, he didnt, and he's now a picky eater....we still tease him from time to time. hope your baby learned that not all 'choclately' treats taste good!

S.,
Don't worry she will be alright. I have a baby girl too that everything goes in her mouth. My older son brought home a dog without my permission (well that is a sore spot) and it took a poo on my NEW carpet. I was so mad. I turned to get toilet paper to clean it up and when I turned back around, the baby girl had gotten into it and put it in her mouth. It took forever to get that smell off her hands and to wash her mouth. But the point is, it is ok. It's life, they do things like that and they move on to worse things when they get older. Relax. We have all had kids that did things like that.

LOL wow, I thought my kid was the only one who ever did that.
I was over at a cousin's house with my oldest son, then 8 months old. She had several dogs and I put my son on the floor on his blanket so I could go to the bathroom. When I came out, he was under the couch (one of those couches on legs). I pulled him out and saw poo all over his face. Apparently one of the young dogs took a dump under the couch and he was eating it!
I got him in the tub and washed his mouth out with water and a washcloth 5-6 times (making sure to get his gums good) then used his baby toothpaste about the same number of times.
He never got sick from it and since he had such a negative reaction eating it (me washing his mouth so much), he never did it again.
Replying to the other response.. my 2nd son was a poo finger painter. I put his diaper on backwards and when that stopped working, I cut the feet out of his sleepers and he wore them backwards so he couldn't reach the zipper at night. Thank God they eventually outgrow it!

Hi S.,
While poo obviously has no nutritional content, eating her own poo should not hurt her. Since her body has produced it, there should be nothing in it to seriously harm her.

I would be a lot more concerned if it were someone's else's or an animal's. The reason being, there may be bodily extractions such as disease or medication that could potentially harm her.

Best of Luck.
J.

My kids did the same thing and also my nephews. They decorated their cribs and the wall behind it. I put them in the bathtub and scrubbed mouths - there were no consequences healthwise. It's a "rite of passage." Yuck!

I haven't every had this experience with either of mine both much older (17 & 10 yrs old) however, I am guessing, only guessing that your little one won't take this habit up as a favorite snack seeing as she was smart enough to bring the left over to you! She should be ok otherwise, you may want to give her some extra fluids just to clean her system out. And oh yeah, just in case keep the diapers in a different container for a little while!

My son did something similar, I was changing his messy diaper and he reached into the diaper and grabbed some poo and put it right in his mouth! I freaked out, cleaned out his mouth, took him to the bathtub and scrubbed him from head to toe, (and mouth, again) but his Dr. said not to worry unless he started to throw up, & he didn't. So now we just have a story to tell.

If it's only her poo. She will be fine. Now if she moves on to other peoples that might make her sick. Yes it's nasty and you can hardly hold back getting sick your self when cleaning her up but Thats mommy hood. I had to put my daughters diaper on backwards to keep her from taking it off and eating it or playing finger paints on the walls with it. She has now stop (Thank the Lord).Good luck

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Kids are curious and they will find all sorts of things to freak us out. One thing you could do is to flush the poo away before throwing out the diaper. This will keep curious hands away, not to mention cutting down on the smell. If you look at the diaper package, you will actually see that they say to flush the waste, not throw it away with the diaper. I didn't know this until I read an article on cloth diapers. I looked at the package and lo and behold, that's what it said. Anyway, don't worry, I'm sure your little girl will be fine.

As gross as it is, it is just digested food. She'll probably be just fine but I would also see what pediatrician has to say.
