So I am thinking of doing a disco theme birthday party for my daughter who will be 2 in November. She loves to dance and twirl and run around! I thought this would be a cute idea. But the only thing I can think of to do is of coarse the dance floor but would like other actives for a wide range of ages. Any ideas would be great.

Great idea! How about musical insterments so they can play along? bubbles would be great too, and scarves as someone else mentioned. You could serve them Tang(sp?)
I would never have/make time for this but you could fing pictures of charicters she likes in dance "like" positions and blow them up for the walls.

We just did a 70's theme for a work function(were going to do just "Disco" but thought 70's would be a better theme since it includes the hippies too!), this is what I did:

-Oriental Trading.com - Bought LOTS of Disco balls the necklace kind and some larger disco balls to hang all over the ceiling / wear. LOTS! If you think you got enough,.. buy a couple more! Them send the children home with one as a party gift they will love it! The parents will probably want one too!
-GAMES-Oriental trading also has a spin disco moves dance game (might be too advanced for a two year old though!) We also bought retro games to play on the side- Rubik's Cube, Connect Four, Twister,.. Set them up for independent play and also added that fun retro flare. Mini slinkys and UNO card games would make GREAT gift bag stuffers (check oriental trading/local party store)
-Check out the local party supply place to get some in the door streamers as well as anything metallic (doesn't have to be disco themed sometimes just getting metallic colors works, can be used for other party themes and less expensive.)
-Check out the local thrift shops, pick up some seventies records and tape/tack them up on your walls and place them around tables,..etc (the records/the record holder) this and the disco balls are key for making it super cool! The best part is you can probably get 2-4 for a dollar and it doesn't matter what shape they are in cause your not buying them to listen to! If you get a black light/disco ball the kids would LOVE IT! Check out spensers for inexpensive ones..
-Lots of disco music! 2-3 cd's would be perfect! That way you wont be listening to the same songs over and over!
-Food idea - we bought a bunch of retro snack food/candy may want to limit this since you dont want to fill them up with sugar or pick a couple for gift bags (will help fill them up for less but also will be super cute!)- Just give you a run through since I did my homework on this you wont have to: Anything Hostess: Twinkies, Ho-ho's, etc.. Cheese-its, FONDUE!!! WAS A HUGE HIT! (We had Cheese & chocolate), Nabisco snacks: Nilla Waffers, Glass Bottled Coca-cola(QFC had glass six packs super cute! Made GREAT edible decoration!), Cheese Wiz/Easy cheese and crackers. DEFINITELY DO THIS: MAKE a big batch of Rice Crispy Treats!
Candy- BIG RedVines container (these are good and not terribly bad for kids!), Otterpops, Bazooka bubble gum, tootsie pops, big league chew, pixie stix, PEZ, anything retro...

Another thought if you expand it to 1970's you can include hippy beads and stuff,.. if you know a family member or teenager who's relatively good at art you could even get some inexpensive face paints and have a face painting table! Make it simple and just have a few designs that go with the theme: Rainbows, Peace signs & Hearts. That would be so fun!

Hope this gives you some good cheap ideas!

This website gave me great ideas!

Have fun! Make it low key! Going this route for our work function was especially great because it was cost effective and everyone LOVED how it brought back memories. It was SO easy! The 70's had GREAT snack food!

Another great idea depending on how into this you want to get if you do a general 70's theme and depending on the age range of the kids is to make tiedye shirts,.. I did it in elementary school and thought it was the coolest! If they're young you can do them yourself and then leave them in the rubber bands (once they're dried) and the kids can unband them and open them up to see the surprise of what their shirts look like.

How about shopping at Goodwill and picking up a bunch of "disco clothes" and retro dress up stuff for a little dress up station? Just put out a mirror and surround it with all sorts of fun dress up clothes and let the kids have a ball! Even little boys enjoy this, especially if you add some crazy sunglasses and hats to the mix. Sounds like fun!

Dear B.,
Our kids and I love the website Uptoten.com. One of the activities in it is dressing the characters up in disco outfits, messing with the lights and music, and telling "Mawa" which dance moves to do. For your little one, you could have dress up dolls, dress up clothes (complete with wigs,) of course dances, and maybe special lights or a makeshift disco ball. (Perhaps a prism that would refract the light?) Anyway, whatever you do, have fun!

What a cute and original idea! At age 2 the dance floor might be enough to make them happy. You could play some games with the children like "Ring around the Rosie","London Bridges", & "Musical pillows"(instead of chairs) to music. Have a silly dance contest, where everyone wins for something. Have a basket with dancing scarves in it to play with.

We had a dance party for my daughter's 3rd birthday. The GLOW STICKS were a huge hit with everyone. Her birthday is in Jan so it got dark early as it will in November. I went to the party store down by the water front (can't remember the name) and got a spinning colored disco ball, I think it was $12 (but it broke a few days after the party). They had some glow in the dark stuff but it was pretty expensive (even though I didn't mind spending some $). So I looked on line and found a rave site that had really good deals on a much wider variety of stuff. We ordered these sets that you could string together and make necklaces or bracelets or glasses! that the older kids could make for the younger ones. They also had these flashy lights on elastic that you put around each finger (and they fitted the little ones). I had moms calling me saying how much their little one loved their flashing finger ring! I had some left over peanuts so I buried all this stuff in the peanuts and everyone picked something out, danced crazy with it and got to take it home.

I don't have the website to hand but I do have the order confirmation from "RaveStuff - Glow Sticks, Necklaces, and Rave Lights!!" So google that!

it came on time and as ordered and as I said, much cheaper than I found else where.

I know glow stuff is more 90's than disco but the kids loved it and I would definately do this theme again. The party favors were the the theme, used at the party and appreciated beyond.

The only other suggestion is to make sure you have good music lined up.
Have fun!

Helen

It sounds like a blast, I can only imagine the soundtrack! Some cute party favors would be silver balls (disco balls), anything with a peace sign (which is fairly popular right now), check out www.orientaltrading.com for more ideas. You could do "simon says"- the disco version with dance moves. I'm sure I'll think of more and come back and edit, but what a good idea!

There are some great ideas here. I wish I would have asked before our school's 70's theme dance last March.

I wanted to add that you could have the guests make pet rocks. We did this and the kids loved it. I bought a bag of flat rocks from a nursery. We bought sharpies to decorate them. I bought some glue and google eyes to put on them. We still have them around the house. You could get little cardboard boxes and straw (filler) to make a house for the rocks. Could make a fun gift bag. Have a great time!!

Make a disco ball cake! Get a rounded pyex bowl (you can bake in all sizes of them) and put your batter in there to bake - when you let it cool and then slide out you have a rounded surface. At any party store you can find edible sparkleys so frost it a grey color, use white to draw the lines, and then line them with metallic little balls or with edible glitter. Get the pens and practice "groovy" letters to write "Happy Birthday". Viola! Disco ball birthday cake!

As for activities a craft is always a winner. Head to Michael's and tell an associate that you are having a birthday party and need a craft - they can help you find everything appropriately themed. What we did was got the little mesh bags and the foamies that stick to it and let the kids decorate those then used them as the gift bags which they filled with candy from the pull-string pinata - solved the goody bag and craft needs. Saved on money and entertained kids from ages 18 months all the way up to 12 years old. If you decide to do crafts you don't need anymore than two of them.

Best of luck!!

How fun... you thinking party or room theme for her bedroom? I immediately thought bedroom, so I'm sorry if I misunderstood.
I would say you have to have a mirrored ball and hang beaded curtains in the windows. You could put shelves up on her wall and line them with lava lamps... but those can get expensive. I would definately get her a lava lamp night light.
Another thing you could do is go to some vintage shops and find some super "groovy-chic" outfits to piece together and put them up on her wall. You could also get her involved by getting some muslin and tye-dying panels of it to hang or put on her walls instead of paint or wall paper. I knew a lady when I was a kid who would use cornstarch (I think that's what my mom said) to "wallpaper" her house with panels of fabric because we couldn't paint. It comes down with just soap and water when you're ready to change the look. For that matter, you could hang beaded curtains all the way around her room on a single colored background... they do have sparkly ones if I remember.
Whatever you do, I'm sure it will be wonderful and she will love it. What a great idea!! Have fun with it... and your precious "Dancing Queen"!
