Can anyone tell me how to go about helping my father file for disablity? He has worked in construction for over 30 years and has major knee problems. He has trouble standing for long periods (which his job requires) sometimes he can barely get up off of his chair, and he has trouble getting up and down stairs. I feel he needs to stop working. Last summer he was in horrible shape every day and would come home looking like he just ran 100 miles. I don't think he can handle his job anymore. He was killing himself just to make ends meet and I hate to see him this way.

At the moment he is collecting unemployment due to his job being seasonal. Spring is almost here and he is supposed to start work again but I just don't think he can handle it. I know that the application process can take months and even years but I truly believe he should have filed a long time ago.

He will be 58 in may, and the only real work experience he has is construction (brick laying is his main trade).

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

As others have said, it would start with a thorough physical examination of your dad. Then he may be able to apply for disability but that process is long and you are not always guaranteed to get it the first time around. My husband finally applied for his as he has been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder which causes isses with working. At the present time he gets regular Social Security until the hearing at which time he will or won't and we will go around again. You have to start somewhere. Oh remember, he may be in denial and want to quit but can't because it is a male ego thing. Good luck to you and your dad. The other S.

Here is a link, to research it:
http://www.google.com/search?q=fmla+for+diability&ie=...

It is about FMLA the family medical leave act.
I don't know about this in conjunction with "disability" or disability benefits.... but try click on the links.

Also, does he have disability insurance? That can also kick in to help him.

good luck,
Susan

I am not sure exatly what is involved but I do know that a doctor has to indicate him as unable to perform his normal work or the work he has knowledge for. The first step would be a checkup with the doc. Of course, if your dad has been pushing himself this much, he may not like the idea of not working anymore.
