Dipaer Rash??

My 8 month old son has had mild diaper rash in the past. I use Butt Paste and it's usually gone after 1 application. For the past few days, he has the red rash all over his genitals, groin area, etc. The Butt Paste, Baby Powder and Desitin aren't working....this morning when I changed his diaper he wined! Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Have you introduced any new foods recently? My kids had this reaction to certain fruits: tomato and pineapple were the worst, but even peach, plum, grape and berries did it to a certain extent. I think they were having trouble digesting the fruit and it was making their stool acidic. They outgrew this issue.

Try limiting foods to grains and banana for a few days, or until the rash clears up. Then reintroduce the other fruit one at a time (waiting a few days between each) and see if it triggers the rash.

Could be a yeast infection (babies can get it on the skin). I'd recommend taking him to the pediatrician as soon as possible and having them look at it so you can get a prescription. The prescription clears it up quickly (within a day or two). Hope baby feels better soon!

It sounds to me like he might have heat rash down there...any chance you can let him air out a little for a few minutes a day, or maybe right after a diaper change??? Try putting him in a luke warm bath to sooth the rash..see if that helps.

good luck

Switch to cloth diapers! He may be sensitive to all the chemicals in the disposables.

May be allergic to the diaper. Are you using generic diapers or baby wipes? My son is allergic to generic diapers, can only use Pampers on him.

Try California Baby Calendula Cream, they have it at Target and a lot of grocery stores. It is natural and works wonders.

TRIPLE PASTE
It is THE best EVER. They sell it at drug stores and sometimes its in the pharmacy, so you must ask for it, even though there is no prescription required.
And, don't wipe with each wet diaper, that adds moisture to the area.
If possible, keep a diaper off of him for as long as you can. Maybe play on linoleum or tile floor so that the clean up is easy.
Good luck!

When my little ones have had bad diaper rash and make sure not to clean them with wet wipes , even the unscented or sensitive ones cause irritation and can sting them when they are sore , instead I used cotton wool and some warm water to clean them , then pat them dry with paper towel and then add the cream , if the rash doesn't clear up or get's worse get him checked out incase he has a urine infection or maybe some dry skin/eczema that is bothering him.

I would take him to the doctor and make sure is is not a yeast infection instead of diaper rash. They can look very simular, but the yeast infection will not respond to diaper cream. Several of my cousins have had babies with a yeast infection and did not recognize it. My aunt help one of my cousins when all 4 of her children were severely sick and need special treatments almost hourly day and night. The set of twins both had rashes that my cousin had been treating as diaper rash for several months with no change in them. My aunt immediately recognized that it was a yeast infection rather than diaper rash and insisted that she mention it to the doctor on the next days doctor check up. It turned out that it was a yeast infection. Also, 2 of her own grandchildren recently had a yeast infection.

If diaper cream is not helping I would have it looked at to see if it is a yeast infection.

I agree that it might not be plain old diaper rash, I would have it looked at ASAP. Then I would think about switching to cloth diapers. We use cloth and I LOVE it. Rashes are pretty much nil and if he does get one it's because he needs a little airing out. Try some nakey time, it can work wornders =)

if he likes baths give him an oatmeal bath then give him naked baby time. there was a posting about a product i think it was called bag balm (?) they were saying that stuff was the whip. also maybe give him some yogurt. to help get some good bacteria into his gut. I have always had success with the desitin overnight cream. gl

I remember my son had a similar rash last year. I used Butt Paste every time I changed him I just love the stuff, he hardly ever had a rash. So when this happened, Butt Paste and Desitin didn't work I took him in. He did have a yeast infection. The Dr. prescribed Nystatin ointment, it cleared up in 1-2 days. If it's just a rash I switch between purple desitin and A+D ointment and let him air dry for 10 - 15 minutes. Recently I used Triple Paste, it works good too. I heard that Bordeoux Butt Butter is really good, same company that makes Butt Paste. I'm going to try that one next, couldn't find it at Walgreens. Double check if you can use baby powder, when I had my son 3 years ago the nurses at the hospital told me not to because it wasn't good for the baby.

Take him to the pediatrician. He may have a secondary infection that needs antibiotics.

I agree with switching his diapers. There are a lot of chemicals in diapers and ifyou don't want to use cloth (I didn't either) then you should try Nature's Babycare. I have used them since I used up all the diapers I was given for shower gifts (I had to use rash cream off and on the whole time I used the diapers) and I love them. They are good for baby and the environment. Below is a link but you can also order at costco.com. Some Targets and most Babies r us carry them in store.

Sounds like a yeast infection which my son has had often. We use lamisil and hydrocortisone ointment 1%. you can get both at a drugstore. Lamisil is for jock itch which is essentially what yeast infection in boys is. We used 2-3x daily until cleared up and put butt paste over it

Boys can get yeast infections too because of the moisture in the diaper. I would take him to the doctor and see what he/she says. Your baby may need a prescription ointment. Most likely, it will be Nystatin and it works great. I hope this helps. =)

My dau pediatrician gave us this great combination. Diaper rashes were a constant issue and to this day she gets irritated by pool water and even her own urine.

Buy regular Mylanta and Aquaphor. Don't orally give the mylanta, shake it up and apply directly to the skin liberally-you want to see the white liquid on him. Take a blow dryer and dry it on his skin, now apply aquaphor. Overnight it should be normal again.

I second Triple Paste, it's not the same as Butt Paste and provides INSTANT relief. I don't know what I would do w/out it, my kids have the most sensitive bottoms and can get rashes very easily, this stuff is a God send! : )

You can find it at any Walmart, Target or Walgreens. I usually get the 10oz for $17 at Target, it lasts forever with that size.

Take care, hope he's feeling better soon.

Triple Paste!! My 2nd born would get diaper rash now & then, in both cloth & disposables. He just has more sensitive skin than my 1st born, who never got diaper rash - ever. I called the advice nurse to ask about ointments & she highly recommended Triple Paste. I found a small tube of it at Walgreens but Target carried it as well. It's expensive, no doubt, but you don't use very much of it & it does the job. My boy is now 15 mths & I'd say I have to use it once a month at most. I think the 2 oz. tube cost me close to $20, but I haven't even used half of it & it's been 6 months since using it. So, well worth the cost. Good luck!!

It's yeast. When what appears to be diaper rash doesn't respond to diaper cream it's usually yeast. They look almost the same. You can get prescription nystatin from your dr or , as my dr recommended, you can use clotrimizole. It is over the counter cream for athletes foot actually; athletes foot is just yeast on your foot. You can get it at any drugstore. Put the clotrimizole on, then the diaper cream with each diaper change. Clean your baby with lukewarm water. Another trick I learned from my daycare is to rinse out your baby wipe with lukewarm water and then clean your baby. Cleaning with just the water is much easier and stings less - they won't cry as much at cleaning time. I am also a believer in Triple Paste cream - wonderful stuff!

I second Maria! Cloth is the way to go! What I do when my son gets a bad one (we part time disposable since the stupid day care refuses to go cloth. I'm switching soon!!) is I let him play in the tub or a baby tub with nothing in it. If your guy is mobile I'd go with the tub he can't get out of. Then when it's bath time I put a bit of baking soda to sooth it. Then the butt past during the day (usually during a diaper rash since I don't have a cloth friendly ointment, I use disposables) and at night I douse his but in baby powder the corn starch kind. Some people say it's useless (which it could be for their baby) but it really helps my son's bum stay dry. And do a diaper change at 2 am when he wants a bottle.
