My toddler has recently had some "back up" issues resulting in us having to assit her with an enima. What are folks doing to provide sources of fiber in their child's daily diet?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts! She's actually gone back to her usual digestive ways. We have increased the water (mixed with juice a little bit) and increased her fiber.

Things that really get my son going are pears, sweet potatoes, peas, corn. We also use whole grain bread only never white and Ronzoni pasta even if you use the white version of it it has a lot of fiber. Any fruits and vegetables and grains will help. Also beans are super good fiber. Let me know if you need serving ideas and such. There is a great recipe using peas that makes little pancakes that helps getting them into a picky eaters diet.

Miralax is a miracle. My son dealt with constipation issues, and since we began using it, he hasn't had a problem since. Miralax is not a stimulant, like laxatives, it simply pulls more fluid in to the bowel to keep the stool softer, and easier to pass. And babies can use it. Check with your pediatrician or pharmacist. It's sold over the counter, and there are even generics of it now. Try it. It's wonderful.

My kids loved fruits and veggies, and I gave them lots of water. Unfortunately it took years before they were both found to have food allergies/sensitivities. In the meantime the problem eventually even affected brain function and one had osteoporosis in her teens. The doctors started treating the brain thing as a "mental illness" and gave more and more psychotropics. Who would have thought problems with gluten, dairy (and soy but not to that extent) could have derailed the course of my precious kids' lives? There was more to it - both also had hypothyroidism, but because the doctors were just concentrating on TSH levels, that was not properly addressed either (low thyroid hormone can also cause slowed bowel function). And if just one pediatrician or psychiatris or GP had stopped to look at the whole picture and take the slowed bowel problem seriously.... Oh well. They didn't. (My kids are doing well now).

Peaches work wonders! Fresh peaches are best, but babyfood peaches work pretty well, too. If your child doesn't like the taste, mix them in a smoothie. We went through the constipation issue several times, even trying an enema once (NIGHTMARE for all of us!), and eventually found peaches to be the best solution. To this day, if I think it's been too long since my son has "gone", I give him a peach (or smoothie w/ babyfood peaches) right away to ensure that we don't ever reach that painful stage again.
Good luck to you!

give her water to drink only its a natural stool softener. how long is she going with out pooping if its one -four days dont worry about it of course unless shes screaming in pain. something that always helped my daughter was warm baths. some times she would poop in the tub but it was normally firm so easy to clean up. dont use enemas much b/c they will cause her to become Dependant on them and cause many issues.

My DS didn't mind prune juice but watered down a bit. I just had him take small drinks at a time.

Then with warm lavendar oil, I gently massaged his legs and tummy. He loved that. What I did also was hold his ankles while he was on his back and slowly push one leg up at a time. It just helped him work it out much easier!

With my little one we let her drink prune juice also and I added more fruits and veggies to her diet. (apples, peas, etc.) We also cut back on the milk and cheese. She would have 4 cups of milk a day and she loves cheese. Monitoring this seemed to help some.

fiber is great, but you have to be sure to keep her hydrated. if she is not getting enough water, it will cause constipation, and that may be what ultimately results in "backups"

Something completely different from the norm but....a friend told me to use a little olive oil on their tummy and rub/massage it in and that helps digestion system move. I have never had to try it, but I have heard of some others doing that.
