I was amazed at how many of the responses have the same story.... I also have a 2 1/2 year old who has significant struggles with BM's. She has never been "regular" even though she was breast fed for the first 12 months. Finally, her pediatrician recommended a powder to add to her juice that softens the stool. For the first time, she is actually regular and not in severe pain. He also recommended switching to skim milk (milk fat can be too binding) and white grape juice. It was worked wonders so far (she has only been on the powder for 2 weeks).

I had this with my daughter, she is 3 1/2 now and we tried Benefiber added to her juice twice a day and it helped to regulate her timing of BM's and also to help soften her stool so that she didn't have to about give birth every time she went potty.

Hope this helps--if you need some dosing info, let me know and I would be more than happy to share.

I would talk to her dr if this seems like a ongoing thing.... My daughter was the same way. But she seems to have out grown it. But there is a natural stool softner that most doctors will prescribe and I've heard it works wonders.

My daughter had the same problem when she was little, her Dr. told me to give her A half teaspoon of mineral oil every day, the one that I gave is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. I would still ask the Dr. but this really did work. Good luck and I hope this helps.

My 3 year old had the same issues when she started potty training. I talked to our ped. and she gave me a script for something called Glycolax. It pulls water from the digestive tract so it loosen the stools and makes them easier to pass. She only had to be on it a few weeks. Once she got regular they stopped being to large and hard. Good luck.

My 3 year old son is the same way. He will take 1/2 an hour or more, and gets very agitated while sitting there. My mother-in-law, who was a nurse for 15 years, suggested two things:

1. Limit starchy veggies like peas and corn, and make sure he's getting plenty of other fruits and veggies. My son eats frozen peas like candy, so that was a big one for him.
2. Give him a book to look at while sitting there. When he is struggling, he gets worked up, and it can be counter-productive. When he looks at a book, he doesn't think about it so much.

I'm also wondering if my son has trouble because he holds it too long. I could be wrong, but my sister had the same trouble with her son when he was younger.

Good luck!

We go through this with my son we have to limit his milk and make sure he eats lots of veggies .My olderson also went through this and we had to give him a fiber cewable tablet for him to take when he was little but now that he is older he does not have this problem as much .If you really think there maybe something wrong i would just talk to your DR about it and see what they recomend !

I have a 5 year old that has been battling the same issue. Our pediatrician told me he prefers the natural route first before we try meds (like Miralax powder that I could add to his drinks)and it's been working very well.
Things he told me to feed him more of:
Grapes, grape juice, raisans, apples, prunes or prune juice if they will actually drink it. He liked prunes a month ago, now he doesn't so usually I can get him to eat one by compromising or just being sneaky.

You should probably still talk to your ped. about it, just so he is aware there is an issue. And if the natural methods don't work, you can always get an Rx for something to help her along.

Hello J.
I have a two year old little girl Lucy who just loves to eat cheese and all. She has a b/m on a regular basis but I make sure she stays active and that I balance it out with fruit and greens. There has been a time or two that she has had me worry but I try and maintain a balance diet with her. Try a routine schedule of eating the right stuff. It is hard but try to keep her active too. With warm weather around the corner I beleive being out doors can help. Lots of Luck!

Don't know if this helps or not but we had the same problem with my son when we introduced him to regular milk. His constipation was so bad that we had several trips to the emergency room where they would litterally have to dig it out. We cut way way back on all milk products and offered plenty of juices and he finally just out grew it.
