I am trying to diet a bit and found the most delicious diet ice cream, but it is made with aspartame :( Since becoming pregnant til now, I have abstained from aspartame for the most part...Does anyone know if it is OK to have one or two servings of diet ice cream with aspartame if I am bfeeding a 17 month old toddler 4 times a day????

Please feel free to be honest either way....

Thank you.

Why risk it? You need to eat healthy of course but do it naturally. I truely believe it is healthier to eat natural foods that grow in dirt instead of a lab. The longitudinal studies are going to show Aspertame and other artificail foods will be detrimental to peoples health. Maybe not cancer but probobly so other thing like migraines or something.

If you have an ice cream maker then make your own. Look for recipes for ice milk. I looked up Ice Milk Recipes and got lots. It's basically milk, sugar, and a little vanilla. We used to make it when I was a child and to this day I can't stand how ice cream coats my mouth am\nd makes it feel all greasy.

Stay away from the aspertame. Our bodies were not intended to process chemicals; it doesn't know what to do with them so it stores them in our fat cells and organs eventually leading to problems like cancer. As a bfeeding mom of a 14 month old, I'd avoid it. Get somethong with real milk AND real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup, which is another chemical.

Hi, Aspartame has been shown to cause headaches in children, There are other health risk involved with the use of aspartame. Google it..You probably will not want it in YOU much less your little one:).BTW Aspartame has been renamed as aminosweet & is to be sold as a "natural sweetner"...Funny how big money can manipulate. I think you'd be better off enjoying a good quality ice ceam with ingrediants whose names you can read & know>

I don't really know, but if you do eat it while nursing, just watch out for allergic reactions. I have heard of people (my husband) being allergic to aspartame.

But if you can withhold eating the ice cream until your toddler is weaned, then no ice cream is healthier than diet ice cream.

Good luck with the dieting. To satisfy my sweet tooth, I used to drink sodas. Now I eat probably 2 or 3 jolly ranchers a day (70 calories total) but the jolly rancher lasts long enough to satisfy my sweet need.

No way!!! Get rid of anything made with artificial sweeteners! It is the worst thing ever created! It is literal poison! It is 600 x sweeter than sugar thereby making the person crave sugar even more. Studies have shown that consuming them actually make ppl fatter and heavier. Child should never have this anywhere in their diet. Check every single label for them because companies like to sneak them in. Also beware of high fructose corn syrup. Help you child not be set up for illness as an adult. Do not let it in your house~~Stevia is ok. Anyhting that wasn't around when Grandma grew up is how you should feed yourself and your child.

Diet *ice cream*? Really?
Might I suggest getting the single serving haagen daaz ice creams? They're rich, creamy, yummy, normal ingredients and you stop after eating a single serving. If you're eating several servings of a 'diet' ice cream it kinda defeats the purpose. Give your body what it wants, just not as much of it.

I would just stick with regular ice cream and eat only a tiny bit of it. Chemicals aren't good for anyone. :)

I'm not a fan of the artificial sweeteners for anyone so my vote is have a tiny bit of the real stuff when you feel like some ice cream.

It is NOT ok.
And even when you aren't nursing why eat something that kills brain cells- I always figure I don't have extra to have some killed off :-)!
And yikes how do you think it is delicious if you haven't tried it already?
Really if you want icecream find the best and have a dish, and handle those cravings with something that is also good for you and your little one.
It is always best to eat real food.
best,k

Aspartame is the most hazardous of artifical sweeteners... it acts as a neurotoxin for some people since it upsets our amino acid balance and neurotransmitters in the brain. It also has a formaldehyde compound as a break-down byproduct. Aspartame has been shown to actually foster weight gain and carb cravings so it's not really a diet ingredient. The best sweetener alternative to try is Stevia, while xylitol, saccharine, and sugar alcohols like sorbitol are safe in moderate quantities. You can find ice creams at health food shops like Whole Foods that would be better, or you can learn to make your own!

DR Hale's "Medications and Mothers' Milk" rates it as an L1, which means it is safe. The only indication it states to abstain from aspartame, is if you have an infant with PKU (phenylketonuria). For pregnancy, is was a B - also safe.
