Did You Prepare Your Body for Pregnancy?

Hi Mamas!

OK, so I’m so excited….I am DAYS away from having my OB’s blessing to conceive again!! My husband and I are so excited to be able to not worry about getting pregnant again. Our plan is not to actively try, but we’re not going to NOT try. It will happen when it happens, and there’s no pressure for us. In preparation, I’m trying to figure out what to do about changing my habits a bit, like decreasing alcohol and caffeine, less sugar, watching out for chemicals in products, lunchmeat, etc. BUT, at the same time, I don’t really want to give up those things until I know I’m pregnant. I mean, a glass or two of wine, sushi, or a cup of coffee doesn’t seem so bad--especially since we don’t know when we’ll get pregnant, so it could be months until we conceive. So, my question is, what did you do to “prepare” your body? Did you act as if you were pregnant before you got pregnant, or did you wait and cut all the bad stuff out after you found out?

Thanks for your advice. Hubby and I are SO happy to finally have another chance for a little one. :)

I have a SIL who (for years) "prepared her body" for pregnancy.
Me? Not so much.
I'm a big believer in "all things in moderation" and pretty much lived that philosophy throughout my pregnancy. Happy healthy baby.

So....yeah..I guess I was more aware after I was pregnant.

Speedy Conception to you! LOL

First and second time were a surprise because I was on birth control, but the second I had a positive pregnancy test, I 'played the saint'.

With the 3rd, only planned pregnancy, I acted pregnant ahead of time, and yes, prepared my body. Made absolutely no difference; if anything, the third was (and I say this with all the love in my heart), the worst baby ever.

HAPPY CONCEIVING!! :)

Congratulations! That's very exciting for you.

I did prepare. You can continue to do whatever exercise your body is used to but not start anything new. I made sure to walk three miles 5-7 times per week. It really helped me throughout the pregnancy to keep my sugars in check. I was still walking that routine when I was 9 months pregnant so it does work.

Also, start taking your prenatals now. The help the baby gets from folic acid is right at the beginning of pregnancy so you'll want to make sure your body already has a good level before conception.

I wouldn't worry about caffeine or alcohol until after you conceive unless you drink too much of it now and will have some sort of withdrawal problems. In that case start cutting it back.

Very best wishes.

I didn't do a damn thing. HA! I got pregnant very quickly (first shot with the two we were trying for) and ate lunch meat, peanut butter, diet soda, smoked a bit with my son since I didn't know I was pregnant, got in 2 car crashes (wouldn't recommend that), had hand surgery, and didn't ever take prenatal vitamins. My kids were perfectly fine.
Be as healthy as you always are. Do what you normally do and then when you get pregnant stop eating sushi! Other than that I don't really think there is a whole lot that you must not do.

Other than working out and running almost daily, which I had done for many years, and take vitamins, I didn't cut out anything or change anything before trying to get pregnant. I changed little after I knew I was pregnant, and had a very healthy baby girl.

I'm so happy you decided to wait until you get the OK from your OB/GYN. It really is wise to wait. I'm thrilled that you will soon have the green light to ditch the BC and enjoy trying. Anyway, I did prep my body for both my first and 2nd pregnancies, but not for #3 since he was conceived using contraception. I always spent at least 6 months trying to exercise 3-4 times every week and make healthy eating a habit. The best advise I ever got was "Get in the best shape of your life and then get pregnant". Research tells us that what we eat the 3 months before conception matters more than what we eat during the first trimester. I only cut out alcohol 7 days before my expected period each month due to the fact that before implantation at approximately 7-10 days after ovulation there's no connection with baby and my blood supply. I took my prenatal vitamins religiously and started them 3 months before trying to conceive.
Please don't overthink everything and just enjoy this very special and exciting time. Try not to get too caught up in timing everything just right or depriving yourself of foods and drinks you enjoy. This will only create stress and hinder chances to conceive. Keep life fun and full of adventure and God willing you will soon be pregnant. I still have fond memories of trying to conceive our first. We went to Germany for 2 weeks and celebrated. Although we didn't conceive until the next cycle, we had the time of our lives and made memories that still keep us laughing even on difficult days when all 3 kids are sick or we are up all night with a cranky toddler. Enjoy each stage! Nurse Midwife Mom

No i didnt(all three pregnancies were delightful shocks) but increasing your folic acid and omega 3, 6 &9 oils is just about the best thing you can do for conception and the first 6 weeks.

I really think it's a good idea to give up alcohol. Doctors have zero idea how little or how much alcohol can affect a fetus. Not only that, alcohol can play a part in fertility problems. Your husband should stay away from alcohol too, and be healthy.

I kind of acted pregnant, by default. I can't drink caffeine, because it has terrible effects on me. I don't drink alcohol. I have food allergies, which force me to not be able to eat junk. I can pretty much only eat meat, fruits, and veggies. I don't know if that made a difference, or not. It DID make me feel better about the health of my son. He has still never been sick at 2 1/2. He loves his fruits and veggies. Who knows if my body being healthy had anything to do with it. I did snap back back immediately after my pregnancy. Everything tightened and went back to place within 2 weeks. My body is the same now as it was before. I think a little of that had to do with my body being healthy before. Maybe not, though.

Oh, take prenatal now. Make sure you're getting plenty of folic acid. We did the same thing as you. We didn't actively try, but we didn't use any protection. A month after we made that decision, I had a positive pregnancy test. It can happen pretty fast!

I didn't cut out anything. I'm with you, why cut anything out if you don't know when you will get pregnant. I've also heard that men should drink when trying to conceive, but I really don't know the science behind it. I did try exercising more because with my first pregnancy I couldn't exercise while pregnant, so I wanted to get in to better shape before getting pregnant. I didn't do it this pregnancy, and I don't know if it's because I wasn't in as great of shape, or because I'm having twins, but I'm having a lot of back issues that I didn't have with my first. If your body is stronger and in better shape, you should have an easier pregnancy.

If you in a great shape than just prenatal vitamins, at least six months before conception.

I did have preconception visits before conceiving I wanted to make sure my body was heatlhy & I was still able to carry a baby.I did take prenantals before I became prego with my second & then quit after bfing her after months then with my last I began prenantals while prego & bfing my third I was on prenatals for 15 months after my 3rd was born now with my 4th I began prenatals the moment I found out I was prego I was days late.I try to limit soda intake to a cup or so a day but sometimes that is all I crave & give in a but more but always drink plenty of water to help wash it out,eat fruits & veggies have a stock pile of them fresh is better if I do frozen I make smoothies & add in a fresh banana with yogurt OJ or milk, granola bars since i'm not a big sandwhich person I don't worry about lunch meat if I do have a sandwhich it has to be from Subway or Mr.Goodcents.I'm active with 3 kiddos for now but would & need to walk for 30-45 at least a few times a week but have no time to do so,I watch what I eat while pregnant trying to avoid getting over weight during pregnancy since i'm already over my weight for age & height but have been told it is ok to gain the normal pregnancy weight but feel that will be harder on my body.I always have lost weight during pregnancy & my babies have all been healthy it is becasue I watch what I put in my mouth if it is just junk that isn't going to work.Congrats on you upcoming times with hubby
