Diarreah

My daughter has had diarreah a week straight now. At first I thought she just had a stomach bug, but she isn't running a fever or feeling bad otherwise. Her diet hasn't changed. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Should I take her to the doctor or wait it out a few more days?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took her to the dr. today and he just told me to cut back on milk and give her lots of yogurt. He also gave me some super cream for the horrible rash she developed! Thanks to everyone for your advice!

Well, I would take her to the doctor if it continues. A good friend of mine has a 2.5yo son who a couple of months ago started having diarrhea daily (up to 5x day) and this went on for 6 weeks. They took him to the doctor and the doctor wantted to, of course, do some tests on the child. He did mention, however, that it could be a milk allergy. The child had been drinking milk daily since he turned 1 and never had probs, but they thought they'd try taking him off and see what happens. Well, lo and behold, they took him off milk and his diarrhea stopped. It's been gone ever since. The doc said, well I guess we don't have to run our tests, then. So, you might try that little experiment and see what happens- couldn't hurt taking her off milk for a while. Just a suggestion based on what worked for my friend's son.

Must be something going around. My 6 week old daughter has it too! My daughter is not running a fever either but I took her to the doctor anyway because she looked a little dehydrated. The told me to give her acidophilus to put in her formula. It comes in a powder form at Central Market.

There is something going around that lasts for about a week, so if you feel okay about it, waiting a day or two more will let you know. But if you feel concerned at all, it never hurts to call the doctor and let them know about it and see what they suggest you do.

Someone else suggested acidophilus and that is an excellent suggestion. It will help the digestive tract. It's the good stuff that is naturally in the intestines that will help fight off the bad. Keep an eye out for any blood in the stool (it might look like strawberry jelly). If you see that, be sure to call your doctor right away and save the diaper and take it in the them. Hopefully it's just a little bug that'll clear up on it's own. Also, did you add anything new to her diet? She might be having an allergic reaction.

My son just got over 7 weeks of diarrhea and bloody stools. So not fun! They finally figured out what it was and treated it. Good luck to you and I hope it clears up on it's own very soon!

My ped's nurse suggested giving my son more carbs (pasta, mainly) to help with the diarrhea. I would call the doctor, just to be safe.

I would take her to the doctor. But what I have found with my own girls is that if they drink a lot of juice it causes diareah. So I try to limit juice as soon as I notice that they have diareah or it is an on going problem. Also if she is not runny fever are you feeding her solids foods as well. If she is not running fever solids foods should be fine and sometimes clear it up as well. BUt no child should have diareah for that long so if its not cleared up by morning I would call the doctor.

BRAT diet...bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.
These help getting their STUFF more stiff.

Milk makes runny stool, and juice too. If she isn't potty trained yet she probably has a great rash too. Use straight cornstarch on her booty.

It is probably a virus that they can't do anything about but dehydration is a concern. Make sure she is drinking lots of water. My kids hated pedia drinks but loved the frozen ones. They have something called Horchata, a drink you find in great taco shops. It is a rice drink, that tastes like rice pudding a little. If you can find it premade, great. Look for the recipe online to make some at home. She needs to stay away from milk though.

All my children have went through this it is horrible to see them go through with it but the doctors would not do anything for me. We lived on dry toast, pedialite, and some yogurt. It works but just takes time.

Good Luck!
