Diaper Rash Relief Help

i was a faithful Triple Paste user until my youngest was born and it didn't work on her. I have found that Aquafor (by Eucerin) works great. However, if the rash is really bad I would see a doctor. It is possible for him to have a yeast infection or a strep infection. they will need a prescription to clear them up.

I totally recommend Triple Paste - it worked wonders on my twins when they were in diapers. Good luck.

Don't use wipes - any kind. Use a warm moistened soft wash cloth. Pat dry. Since it hasn't gone away yet it is probably a yeast infection. Get a prescription for nystatin & hydrocortisone. Also try milk of magnesia mixed with baking soda to make a paste. And keep soaking him in the tub with warm water and some sort of cleansing soution that is gentle. Also give him acidopholous.

Here are some things I have tried: Vaseline, Bag Balm, or Lotrimin (contains Clotrimizol? Ithink that's how it's spelled). Anyway, the last one is for yeast type infections.

Other than creams, try putting his diaper on very loose with no pants and no onesie....do a regular undershirt and shirt for the top. This way the air can flow better down to that area and dry it out instead of the usual dampness. Also change his diaper frequently even if it isn't soiled that much.

You can even let him go without a diaper if you're willing to deal with a few accidents. Even better yet...start potty training him! I remember my mom did that with my little brother when he diaper rash so bad it was from his belly button to his knees practically. She potty trained him early and that was the only thing that helped him....she had tried every cream, even switching to cloth diapers...nothing worked,but potty training! It's worth a try, but you do haveto be on your toes. You can look at my responses for potty training help if you want.

As I have learned, the key to getting rid of a diaper rash is keeping him dry. After every diaper change, pat his but dry with a DRY cloth after you have cleaned him with a wipe and apply alot of rash cream. Desitin works for my daughter. What diaper rash creame does is lock out any westness and moisture. If the area is moist when applying the rash cream, that then locks in the moisture and the rash will not go away. Change him more frequently then you normally do and pat, dont wipe but remember to always pat him dry with a dry cloth. try this for a few days and see how it goes. If it doesint get any better, I would take him to the ped.

I know this will totally suck - but let him run around for a bit without a diaper. Hopfully, you have hardwood! Also, I find that Triple Paste works really well. It's a litle pricey but I kept it around for those really bad rashes. Also, whatever cream you use, put it on REALLY thick. You really can't put on enough. It won't wash away as easily. Also, if it's yeasty, call your doctor. He might give you a prescription which will clear it up faster.

First off- go to the doctor! Diaper rashes are the pits, and they can prescribe something to help. Here's the at-home remedy my doc gave me, if I can't get in to see her:

1. Don't use wipes. Wash with Cetaphil and a tissue (just wipe off, no need to rinse).

2. Apply Lotromin 1% cream. (In the athlete's foot aisle- don't use the maximum strength!)

3. Apply diaper cream (zinc) or vaseline over the Lotromin.

4. Repeat 3x a day with the Lotromin, and every diaper change with the Cetaphil and diaper cream.

I saw AMAZING results from this! I must admit, though- the prescription worked just as well, and was a one-step solution. :) My doc also told me to use Bacitracin (NOT neosporin- it can cause a bad reaction in babies) after cleansing when the skin is open- like sores, or bleeding. Then follow steps 2-4. It helps prevent further infection.

It sounds as though his rash may be due to yeast. Rashes that red and sore to the touch usually are. Desitin and those things really won't help because it needs a special anti-fungal cream. Chances are that very messy poopy came out including a whole lot of stomach flora that should have stayed in. Which is what causes yeast infections. I would give your doctor a call about it.

stick to warm wash clothes or a heavey duty paper towel, like bounty, and you could even try the aveno oatmeal bath soother packet for the skin, you just put it in his bath water and let him soak..as for what kind of butt paste....idk..check out the triple paste.

My little boy has suffered from some of the worst diaper rashes ever. The only two things that have helped him are Triple Paste (a diaper rash cream). You can find it at CVS. Another thing that my ped. told me to use when it is really bad and oozing is Lamisil. Yes, Lamisil! I suggest putting the Lamisil directly on his diaper rash and then coating the inside of his diaper with the Triple Paste. You will not be sorry and your little boy will be much happier tomorrow morning.

I think you should take him to the doctor and let him/her give you something for the rash. My son had a terrible rash at one time, he's 14 now, and I took him to the hospital, because it looked scary and he was in a lot of pain. The doctor prescribed an anti fungal cream. I know one was Lotrimin, I can't remember the other one. They also questioned me about the rash because it looked horrible, they thought he was neglected. AFter a few doctor's looked at him, one of them said it's not diaper rash, but a fungas. I'm sharing that with you because they may do the same thing to you.

Get relief for him as soon as possible.

I use Basic H from Shaklee. It is pH balanced so it heals your skin even though it is actually a biodegradable concentrated cleaner. If you can let him air dry as much as possible that will help dry it up. He could be getting this terrible rash from teething as my kids did. If he is having soft poops put him on the brat diet( banana's,rice,apples/sauce & toast)this will help with the loose poop. Hi, My son also got these type of rashes. The quickest relief I found was a bath using a powder put out by Aveeno that contains oatmeal in it. They come in a box of five packets, I think. After sitting in the tub using this for about 20 minutes at night, it made a huge difference for him!!

I would call your doctor. My daughter had a bad case and the doctor gave a prescription for a great diaper cream. It was cleared up almost immediately. I think it is called vusion. I still have some left and use it for my son when he gets a bad case.

My mother-in-law made me this diaper rash cream for my daughter many years ago, but it worked great & I have suggested it to several friends that also loved it! You can put this in clean empty baby food bottles. Mix vaseline & corn starch together to make a creamy paste. There's no exact measurements, but I usually added half the amount of corn starch to vaseline.

I feel your pain because my daughter had the same thing after getting a really high fever. I bathed her with Dove soap, it's very gentle. I then used A&D cream religiously. I found that Desitin was too harsh. The A&D had some Vit. E properties that healed naturally. And of course the obvious, try to keep him clean as much as possible. I hope this helps, one thing to remember, children are so resilient! I'm sure that he is playing and having fun. They know how to manage pain so much better than we do. I hope that your little guy gets better : )

Buy Domeboro - you mix it with water and wipe him down . DO NOT USE WIPES! They will only irritate it.
you ca also try triple past mixed with baby powder. Give it one more day and if it doesn't work take him to the pediatrician. It sounds like bacterial and that requires a prescription

I think if the rash is as bad as you describe, your doctor needs to prescribe triple paste or a burn cream. I have seen doctors prescribe the burn cream when it is so severe that it blisters like burns do. Also - does he have diaherrea? If so - you need to start feeding him the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apples and toast) to bind him.

Diaper rashes tend to be a fungal infection , so try some Canesten Cream twice daily . You usually notice an improvement in the redness within 24 hrs. Also let him go diaperless as much as possible:)

I'm sorry that your baby has such a painful rash. I'd suggest taking him to the doctor to rule out a yeast infection, because if that's what it turns out to be, typical "diaper rash" remedies will not help. Also, I'd stop using any commercial baby washes, lotions, oils, etc - many of them, even some that claim to be for sensitive skin, are full of chemicals and perfume and this may aggravate the rash and the pain.
My suggestion if it's not yeast is to allow him as much diaper free time as you can, and when he is diapered, you can make a great paste by mixing half A&D ointment (has to be the white not the clear) and half plain maloxx.

At one point my daughter was so red and raw the creams slid right off, so I found Gold Bond Medicated Baby Powder at CVS and it worked really well.

Once he clears up a bit you might try that new Balmex clear to seal the skin and then your regular ointment on top.

J. for these cases I use Triple Paste. I swear by this I buy the 1 lb jar at Costco and use it for extreme cases and once in while as soon as I see a hint of read. I tell you I put it on at night and by morning you can see a difference. I can tell that my daughter feels relief as soon as I put it on. I tell you I highly recommend it, it is the best out there. I use Aquaphor and A&D for prevention. The other good thing about Triple Paste is that it washes away easily vs. the Desitin. Triple paste is a bit expensive but worth every penny try it you won't regret it. Hope this helps.

When my son had a diaper rash - he came home from the HOSPITAL with it - we didn't find anything that gave him relief until we went to the pediatrician who prescribed what she called "the Recipe."

First, clean only with soft cloths and water. No wipes. Not even sensitive ones. It was the sensitive ones that did this in the first place for our son.

Pat dry.

Then: Stomahesive powder. Available at CVS. It's a special powder used for sticky abrasions to help medicine adhere to the wound. It's about $12, give or take. GENTLY squeeze the bottle - it 'blows' the powder directly onto the wound. You don't want to wind up washing the powder bottle. It make take a little practice, but a little powder goes a long way. This allows the next ingredient to do its work:

Triple Paste. Again, available at CVS (and it is there we found it the cheapest in the pound tub - half what it would cost at BRU or Wegmans). Put this stuff on like CUPCAKE FROSTING. No kidding. Layer it on there generously.

Corn starch baby powder. Like the stomahesive powder, but this time cover all the triple paste, to keep it from coming off in the diaper so soon.

Be sure all ingredients cover ALL areas of rash, not just the ones you can see when you take off the diaper.

Oh, and don't pat your son's butt - if you left a space in the back, you might have powder all over everything else, too. (though it looks rather funny).

The best thing is air. If you can gate off your kitchen and just let him run around diaperless for a while that is best. Also, my son had a horrible bleeding diaper rash in the hospital when he had surgery. The nurses all had their own concoctions but one that worked was crushing an antacid (like Tums) and mixing it with desitin, then painting it on his bottom. It doesn't come off so great so I would try not to rub it unless of course it got stool in it. Air helped the most!!

I know that you didn't want any of the creams, but my son also had bad diaper rash and I was recommended a cream called vusion. Unfortunately it can only be prescribed by a doctor and it is pretty expensive, but you use a very little and within a day we found the diaper rash was gone.

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste............. it has never failed me. I will say that I use cloth diapers and that is a big help. Also keep a diaper off if you can like during nap time ..... put out a pee pad or something. The air works wonders on clearing this up. You can get the Butt Paste at Target ..... it is not too expensive but it is well worth the money!!!! If you go to their website you can read all about it ......

i know you got a ton of responses but i have to add what works for my son...it's called triple paste...strange name...awesome results! it is pricey though - a small tube is 10 bucks but it works wonders!

This is what I do whenever my baby gets a really bad rash - a warm bath (or shower), and I wash the rash with Cetaphil (a soap-free cleanser that I use on my face, available at ANY drug store - fairly inexpensive.) After the bath, I gently pat the rash dry. Then I put on a fresh diaper with Desitin AND baby powder. Usually, in the morning, the rash is TONS better.

Take him to the doctor and ask them for NYSTATIN POWDER. Often times, diaper rashes that don't go away are actually an infection or a fungus much like athlete's foot. within a few days, it will be cleared right up. Diaper rash creams will only make the rash worse and more painful if it is a fungal infection. And Desitin is one of the worst ones... it is very thick and greasy. You still need to use a barrier cream especially at nap time and bedtime when they sit for long periods. The rest of the time, let him be naked and open to air. You might get a few accidents but it is better than making it worse! Let me know how it turns out...

Poor little guy. My daughter used to get diaper rashes so bad they would bleed. My mother-in-law suggested bathing her often in warm water and pure cornstarch, straight out of the box. That plus plenty of air on the skin (no diaper or cloth diaper only) works like a charm. Good luck.

We use Aquaphor for our son after every poopy diaper and thankfully because of it he has never had diaper rash. Aquaphor is expensive but I think its the best.

let him go for a few days without a diaper. he needs to heal. if you feel like introducing the potty, now would be a great time. if you're not ready, you can put him in underwear (which breathes but is padded to absorb *some* pee). he shouldn't have any pee or poop touch his rash, so you need to change him right away, and you just won't know that if he is in a diaper. if you use cloth diapers, use a wool cover, again - so he is exposed to air. try switching to just water (no soap, no oil) when you wipe him, and of course just dab, don't wipe. for the crease of his legs, i'd use corn starch.
it may be a bit messy, and you may need to coordinate with caregivers, but i promise you it is the fastest way to heal.

When my daughter gets its like that, I use bacitracin until it heals, then I use Desitin. The Bacitracin worked during that painful period when the skin is raw. Also, when I clean her during this time I use a soft cloth with warm water, then I make sure its dry and put the medicine on. I hope this helps.

Hi this isn't quite the "natural" treatment, but the BEST way to get rid of stubborn diaper rash is to alternate between the thick diaper rash cream (like Creamy Desitin) and with the next diaper change use Lotrimin AntiFungal cream. Alternate up to three times in one day and you will see a huge improvement. It could be that he has a yeast infection with the diaper rash - ick!! My nephew has terrible diaper rash and this is the best trick. It always works on my son too when he needs it.

Oh, I've been there.

First, talk to his pediatrician, in case he needs a fungicide or prescription burn medication -- a diaper rash can turn into the equivalent of a second-degree burn. In the meantime, try this, as suggested by my daughter's pediatric dermatologist (imagine how bad her diaper rashes were). Make a stockpot of chamomile tea, then let it cool until it's just below room temperature. While you're waiting for it to cool, put the tea bags on your son's bottom for about 20 mins. Once the tea has cooled (takes a couple hours), pour enough of it into your son's tub to cover his bottom. Have him sit in the tea for about 20 mins, even if he's not happy about it. Repeat the tea sitz baths four times a day and put the tea bags on his bottom between making new batches of tea. In about two days, you should see a difference. It take approximately 48 hours for skin to start regenerating.

Chamomile tea is one of the most astringent substances in nature. It will cause the skin to dry and form a scab, which is what you want in order to prevent infection and encourage healing. At first I was skeptical when the doctor told me to marinade my baby's bum in chamomile tea -- but it works!

You should take him to your pediatrician immediatly- that rash sounds like it might be a yeast infection (relatively common in some babies), which would need nystatin or another cream to relieve him, or it could be another infection- such rawness and redness doesn;t seem like typical diaper rash. good luck! (get an appointment today, but in the meantime, just the regular zinc opide cream or a thick layer of vasline should offer slight relief by providing a barrier).

Is sounds like a yeast infection. My daughter has had them. Use Lotiman (anti-fungal) cream 3 times a day for 3 days. But you should take him to the doctor to make sure. Good luck. they are really painful.

My son used to get these when he ate a lot of berries, and aquaphor with cornstarch powder on top seemed to help, and I always gave him tylenol to ease the pain. You may have to use neosporin or bacitracin if it's open and not healing, or take him in to the dr.

Sounds like a fungal rash. I'd take him to the pediatrician. Avoid putting oil on his diaper area. Use A+D or something with zinc oxide.

The only three things that come to mind, is one, obvious, make sure you instruct his caregiver to change his diaper ALLL The time. even if he wet just once. Two, a trip to the doctor, sometimes a diaper rash like that can be indicative of an infection such as yeast..or an allergy. Three,there is this great cream that my pediatrician has Stop and Shop make near me, called Borafax.. If you're interested maybe I can the ingredients, it eludes me now it's been so long.. but it worked wonders over night it seemed. I also heard the diaper free for as long as you can chance it, to let the air get to it, and keep powder on hand for the leg creases until it clears up.

Hi J., I have seen the rash you speak of. Mine got those when they were cutting certain teeth (just before the molars) You may need to see the doctor but I think the cream was Mycolog which has some antifungal in it. You could use a cool cloth and only pat it. Maybe he would sit in a small amount of cool water. Also some tylenol or baby motrin will help with the pain. Years ago there was a capsule you would break into the bottle and their urine would become the medicine. They don't use this any more but it really worked. Any cream with Zinc oxide(Balmex, A and D-white) will be soothing. If you can get some zinc on his butt, cover it with vaseline so wettness will not penetrate while the area tries to heal. Try soaking your son's bottom in Domeboro. Just try to get him to sit in the tub as long as possible. Watch that he doesn't put any of the water in his mouth. My daughter often has terrible diaper rash. This is the first thing I do and then dry her off well and apply Balmex. This worked for me (i'm a mom of four): Neosporin cream applied directly to the rash area twice daily, using no baby wipes, unless he poops of course...you'll see a difference in 1-2 days; your son will be much more comfortable. Try not to use baby wipes, powder, cornstarch because it will irritate him more and possibly spread the rash. Hope this helps...good luck!

Please consider using Triple Paste. It is a pricy cream and sometimes you actually have to ask the pharmacist to order it - but it is quick and sure relief. My little girl had MAJOR diaper rash after a bout with a stomach bug and I felt terrible for her. This helped immediately.
Another thing - I thought it WASN't good to use water on a rash?

Try triple paste. You can get it in the pharmacy. It is triple zinc ointment and is the only thing I have found (4 organically raised kids) that helps the really bad rashes. Good luck!

The first thin you need to know is, dot not use desitin
when your son have a bad diaper rash.Desitin burn more the affected area, so you need to buy A&D ointment and the real cornstarch the one we use for cook. wash with warm water,dry the affected area and apply a lot A&D then apply the cornstarch on top.Change his diaper every hour.

first of all be sure that is diaper rash. I had thought my son had diaper rash a few weeks ago, it was horrible and red and bumpy. it turned out to be coxsackie. assuming it is a rash, the best cream for me has always been triple paste. and of course let him air it out as much as possible.

I know the hospitals discourage the use of powder, but when my son had a series of diaper rashes we couldn't clear up using any of the suggested methods, we finally went with "air time" (allowing him to run around with no diaper and just being ready to clean up any "accidents" that occurred), Aquaphor on his DRY skin, then powder on top of the Aquaphor to keep the Aquaphor from rubbing off on the diaper. It is the only combination of efforts and products that keeps him consistently diaper rash free. Oh yes, at one point it was so bad that we needed an antifungal cream to clear it up - yeast infection ointment or athlete's foot ointment (they are essentially the same things). Clear that with your pedi, though.

When my daughter was younger i mixed triple antiobiotic ointment and zinc oxide and it gave her a lot of relief. You have to coat the area really well but you should start to see improvement.
Just in case you haven't found remedy yet.

The best treatment I was ever told about by my daughter's ped was Bag Balm - it is found in the pet aisle at wal-mart - it is what they use on the cows utters when they crack & stuff - i was a little hesitant, but once i got that on her she was good to go in no time - it's in a green tin container & is kind of like vaseline but works great - good luck!

Not sure if this is is one of the creams you tried, but we swear by Triple Paste...it always clears up the bad rashes within hours. It used to be behind the counter at the pharmacies, but now at WalMart/Rite Aid, etc.. its out in the baby aisle. Its about $8-9 a small tube. Good luck.

It is amazing and my son has never had a problem -- when he began to have a problem, we were away for the weekend and had forgotten the baby butter -- we used other products, they didn't work -- we got home and he was better rapidly!!! Also, we ran out of the butter and we were in Costa Rica -- a woman there recommended Olive Oil -- it actually helped. I wouldn't do the olive oil all the time -- messy, runny, can end up smelling -- but it did work.

Order the baby bum butter. I really think you will be pleased.

A similar thing happened to my son recently also. I think soymilk was the culprit. Anyway, i would stay away from baby oil for now. It acts as saran wrap & the rash wont heal or may get worse. What kind of oil are u using? It should have NO mineral oil or fragrance..they are very irritating.

What helped my son was putting on a pair of training underwear (thick cotton undies) & no creams/oils for atleast a hour. If you can go longer then go for it! When he did pee the thick part soaked it up & i just changed him. I use Earths Best Diaper cream from Babies R Us. It has no fragrance, no parabens, no lanolin, no mineral oil, or petroleum. The main key is letting it all air out.

If the rash that he has is that nasty looking, and that painful for him, I think I would make an appointment with his pediatrician, and get his advice. A doctor may be able to presribe something that will not only help it to clear up, but may provide some relief from the pain that its giving him as well.

Also, its a little strange that he would get such severe rash after only one messy bowel movement....perhaps it isn't from that at all, but may be some sort of an allergic reaction to something. I think it would be a good idea to have his doctor check it out!

Even though your wipes are "homemade," they can still burn due to the ingredients in the baby oil and baby wash. Also, any kind of wash/oil has harsh additives, which dry skin out and make rashes worse.

I know you said this rash cleared up, but if it happens again, He may have a yeast infection, believe it or not. It is very common, and looks like diaper rash. Get to the pediatrician for an exam and possibly a prescription cream. My friend's son had an infection that became cellulitis because she let it go too long. You don't want that! Good luck.

it sounds weird but my doctor told me to use it so I could get the cream on is oragel (for teeth) rub it on before the cream and it will numb his tushy, however, if he has any open areas DO NOT DO THIS there is alcohol in it and it will sting, but if he is just red it works.

You could try calendula ointment or lotion. You can find it in whole foods or a naturalhealth store. it is what I used exclusively on my daughter. it's natural and can be iused for cuts, scrapes and diaper rash. dont use any chemical based ointments like desitin & butt creams & stay away from scented wipes. the best thing is a soft wash cloth, tepid water and a natural lotion like calendula.

TRIPLE PASTE! Expensive, but well worth it. Also, I found leaving the diaper off for a while helps immensely... Try and convince him to lay down on some towels and watch TV with a bare butt. I think air helps the most. GOOD LUCK! Poor little guy.. =(

try wiping gently with warm cotton balls to clean him up first and get Triple Paste Cream. It is expensive but if you put a good thick layer of the paste on it will clear him right up. I swear by the stuff as do all my friends! GOod luck.

It might be something he's eating that he's reacting to. My older son had a reaction to dairy, and the first place it showed up was in his diaper. It took some trial and error, but we tracked it down to milk, cheese and yogurt, and when I took those items out of his diet, his diaper rash cleared up. (And, at about 5, he outgrew the dairy reaction, too...)

My son had an AWFUL diaper rash when we were finding out he was allergic to diary. I tried all kinds of lotions & remedies but hands down the best was a mixture my peditrician told me about. (the rash went away 2 days later!)
Mix equal parts of Maalox, Lotrimin, A&D ointment and 1% hydrocortisone cream. (i used more of the A & D to thicken the consistency)

Oh man. I know how you feel. So horrible. When this happens to my daughter (11 mnths old) I use Viva cloth paper towels and wet them, i dont use anything else but water to clean up the mess...then I top it off with Butt Paste. I also have thoe HUGE lap pad things I put in her crib and put her in with no pants on for a nap and also use one in the high chair when she eats. I try to give it as much air as possible. She just had one 2 weeks agi, it took about 3 days but it was much better!

My son has this happen at least monthly (also 21 months). Right now I think it's a combination of something he ate (probably blueberries) and his diapers (we're at the tail end of a new kind we tried which we won't use again). He has sensitive skin and very few diaper brands keep him comfortable.

We actually put on nystatin cream (for yeast infections) and then a layer of the desitin ORIGINAL (it has way more zinc in it than other creams), with every diaper change. When we're home with him, we let him wear underwear so more air gets through. He's not potty training yet so we end up changing him when he pees, but this helps promote healing of the bottom too. When his bottom is red like this he won't sit down in the bath, so we let him into the shower with us. By the way, my daughter's doctor said that a rash in the crease of the legs, especially with open sores, is a good sign of a yeast infection. I think nystatin works better and is way cheaper than vusion. Good luck to the poor little guy.

I would give the MD a call. Sometimes rashes like the one you describe are the result of a fungal or bacteria that needs medical treatment. After talking with the MD, a product that I like is Bag Balm found in most pharmacies.

My little guys get a rash like that when they have had too much juice. It happens almost the instant they poo, so there is no preventing it other not giving much juice at all. I have been using bacitracin/Neosporin on diaper rash instead of any of the creams. It works well, and soothes almost instantly. My boys calm right down when they see me pick up that tube, and the rash is usually gone, or almost by the next diaper change.

My co-worker swears by Triple Paste it worked for a while but when my son a bad case of diaper rash my dr. recommended some kind of ointment because he had some kind of fungus along with Balmex. The Balmex cleared him up right away & he has never had another case of diaper rash again. He had it when he was about 12 months & now he is 20 months.

Oh my - I sounds like it could be a yeast infection. You need to get to doc right away and get a prescription cream! It will be better in 2 days.
