If he has diarrhea, feed him the BRAT diet. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. That should slow down the diarrhea and maybe give his bottom time to heal.
My baby is almost 14 months. He is teething really bad right now, and has the worst diaper rash ever. My Mom has him during the day, while i'm at work. He has at least 6-8 poopy diapers a day. Most are small, but recently have been watery and more like diarihea. I use desitin and A&D (is that what its called) and neither are working. My Mom tried corn startch because she said thats what they use to do. Any other idea's. The only other time he has gotten like this is when he was using Huggies, when he was like 8 or 9 months. We switched him to Pampers and he has been fine. Nothing else has changed. Most people say its the teething, i just want to take his pain away! its driving me nuts.. so i turn to you Mama's of Mamapedia- what do i do?
Thank you very much.
** also, my baby has a tendency to be constipated. So we feed him prunes, but not recently since he started teething bad he has had the runs! so i'm worried about trying to change his diet (he is already off the prunes)**
Oh THANK YOU so much to all the answers we got. We have been doing naked time (crossing our fingers he doesn't do a #2, I did get pee'd on a few times over the weekend, but its all worth it!) We also, got the butt paste- this helped so much! The rash was almost completely gone by the next day. He hasn't had many watery poopy diapers so he must be past the teething stage for the time being! I am looking into cloth diapers because we have tried so many types of diapers and he gets some kind of rash with all of them except the Pampers. So i am thinking i will start doing the cloth diapers, just don't know where to get any :)
Once again, thank you very much!!

Boudreaux's butt paste http://www.buttpaste.com/BLButtPaste.php - When my son had a diaper rash that was raw and almost bleeding, Boudreaux's butt paste would have it almost better within a day and all better within two days. Desitin is good for minor rashes and everyday use, but Boudreaux's butt paste will take care of the bad rashes.
Take him to the doctor and ask for Nystatin. My little guy broke out horribly a few weeks ago and I took him to the doctor and she gave us that in a cream.
It worked overnight.
If the diaper rash isn't responding to cream, it might be a yeast infection. This can happen in babies - boys or girls. This happened to my daughter and it wasn't going away because I wasn't treating it properly. You can either get a prescription from your pediatrician (Nystatin) or even use something over the counter - ask your doc.
Make sure he does not have a yeast infection.
That is common in boys and girls.
Take him to the Doctor.
Diaper creams, will not help a yeast infection.
Is he eating anything acidic? This can also cause bad rashes.
Take him to the Doctor. That is the only way to find out for sure if he has a yeast infection or not.
Or maybe he is sick.
you can try an oatmeal bath. Aveeno makes one specifically for diaper rash, I bought them at Walgreens. then let him run around naked and air dry. Good luck!!
NAKED TIME!!! lol. Every time my DD starts looking R., I give her as much naked time as possible. At 14 months, your best bet would probably be to find something fun to do in the kitchen (or any un-carpeted room), maybe pot and pan drums, so that if he has an accident you don't have a stain to clean out... A hair dryer set on low (or no heat, if you have that setting) or a fan aimed at his bottom during each diaper change to dry his bum off before putting on a new diaper will help too. If I can't give my DD naked time, I make sure to dry her with a fan, then I cover her bum in a layer of petroleum jelly to keep the wet off her butt. I haven't had to use a diaper cream yet! (she is teething too...)
~for the constipation, my MIL suggests diluted apple juice and oatmeal... :)
I agree with the idea of the boudreaux's butt cream...it is fantastic stuff!! Also...try getting some of the natural diapers ( sorry I can't remember, maybe by huggies...they are in a green and white package)..it is supposed to be fragrance free and not as like to cause issues. I would also 2nd the naked time...wash his little bottom...get him nice and dry and then just let him go au natural for a while!! Push water if you can get him to drink it...to make his urine less concentrated.
Good luck!!
Cloth diapers are the bomb :) Join a yahoo group, baby center group, or www.diaperswappers.com
There are few brick and mortar cloth diaper stores, but there are a plethora of them online! Some stores even do a cloth diaper trial so you can try different brands with little commitment, like jilliansdrawers.com
Enjoy!
Man did you get lots of answers! If you are trying the purple desitin and not relief I would definitely see your doctor - yeast/fungal infection could really be the culprit and you want to make sure you get the right disgnosis so you can use the right stuff - Purple desitin is stronger than butt paste and A&D, and mary kay night cream/eucerin/aquaphor is more of a preventative or for slight diaper rashes. Don't waste your money trying everything, just see your Doc. You'll get a prescription and then you'll have it for next time it happens (cuz it's likely he'll get it a handful more times in his diaper life).
I've found that a product called Boudreaux's Butt Paste works quite well. Also, if you think changing diaper brands may be a good idea, I've found that the Kirkland brand from Costco seems to be good. I'm basing these recommendations on my experience working with children in childcare for a few years. These two products have seemed to give the overall best results with the children I've cared for.
My daughter gets a diaper rash when she is teething. In fact she's two and half and still getting one right now. So that could be the cause.
She did get a really, really bad (blistering, peeling) rash that wouldn't go away when she was around 6 months old. The rotavirus vaccine gave her runny poop, which gave her a bad rash. I did EVERYTHING to try to get it to go away. It lasted months. What finally did it was to use paper towels and water to wipe her bottom. I've never gone back to "wipes".
I havent read all of these but my daughter had a rash similar to his.
Also try to keep him Coated thick with Vasaline that way when he does poop or pee it wont stick to him and sting him. Also if it doesnt clear up with over the counter creams then its probably a yeast rash and he will need presciption cream and antibiotics. My daughter had one one time and it was horrible she got like blisters and it was a yeast rash because no over the counter creams would work so she got prescibed cream and antibiotics and it helped alot. And we did naked time as well and when she would nap i would buy those big pads you lay down under neath her in her crib so her butt could air out good.
I would go to doctor and see what she/he would be willing to give you for it.

Try Butt Paste, heard its good. And I think there is an old school method with cornstarch, you can look it up. Good Luck
Boudreaux's Butt Paste works great and stays on for a very long time.
first and foremost make sure hes not sick by a dr call them and say u want his stoll sample checked. there was an epidemic of sorts with eggs and ecoli o something recently and as fa as the rash its self. if it is yeast (which u can get fom even being sweaty) u need a special cream frm dr. otherwise for just normal rash. dnt wipe him too much. rinse clean in lukewarm bathwater everytime and pat and air dry. then form a baie between the skin and excriment be it vasaline etc it may b the acidity of the poopies. lol.
Weleda Calendula Diaper Cream has worked miracles for us when nothing else did. We slathered my son's little bum with it before bed and the rash was gone in the morning.
It is probally a yeast rash. You can try hydrocotortisone cream 1% and lotrimin af (the kind you put on feet, not the vag kind) mixed together. First rince the affected area in water (no soap just water), then pat the area dry with a towel, next set the blow dryer on low-cold and dry the area, let area air out for 10 to 15 mins without a diaper, last mix a dab of both creams and apply to rash. Put on diaper. Due this 3-4 times a day until rash is gone. If no improvement within 2-3 days then take your baby to the doctor.
Desitin has always worked really well for my kids. Just put a LOT on, and change your son's diapers frequently to keep the area dry. The rash will go away in a couple days.
Another thing my pedi said to do was give my son oatmeal baths with the Aveeno or drug store brand oatmeal powder (it's usually by the bubble bath & Epsom salts). It draws the acid away from the skin, soothes it and you don't need to use soap since the oatmeal cleanses the skin naturally. Pat him dry then let him have some naked time and then a nice layer of Aquaphor and then diaper cream. Also, make sure he doesn't have blisters because if he does, it's a yeast infection and you need a cream to treat the yeast infection. Don't use commercial wipes, just wet cloths or even wet paper towels.
When this has happened to our kids, we use Aquaphor. It heals gently without the harsh chemicals and provides an awesome barrier for the next time he has a BM. You wipe it off and you are wiping the vasaline off not rubbing the skin. This prevents the next loose stool from intensifying the already bad rash too. I've used this for 4 years and swear by it.
Poor thing, I hope it gets better soon.
Triple Paste diaper rash cream has always worked well for us. We use it with my 13 month old and it sounds like she is dealing with a lot of the same issues as yours - teething, constipation. I also try to let her run around without a diaper at changing time for 10-15 minutes - so she can air out as much as possible. We have also changed diapers a few times - trying different brands to see if that's the problem. We recently went to the organic blend huggies - so far so good. Good Luck!

I am also a big proprietor of naked time on the wood/tile/linoleum floor. For a long time a couple times a day.
Also, after a poop or pee, use water instead of wipes. Air dry before replacing a diaper.
Whether or not it's yeast, the bum needs air and a dry environment.
I would look at what else your baby has been eating because a lot of the time my daughter would get diarrhea and diaper rash from too much citrus, etc.
The best diaper rash treatment in my opinion is to let your baby go diaper free as much as possible to let him air out and heal.
We just got over a bad one-- used Burts Bees diaper cream when he had a diaper on, a LOT of diaper free time, arrowroot powder to keep things dry and healing in there overnight, and a quarter cup of raw, unfiltered apple vinegar cider (Braggs brand) in his bath to get rid of any yeast. Cornstarch can lead to a yeasty diaper rash getting worse because the yeast likes to eat the cornstarch-- so it is likely that your child has a yeast rash. The vinegar in the bath will work (do not put it directly on baby--owie!)-- do one bath a day until you see it start to heal (should see improvement by the second bath if yeast is the problem).
My 13 month old just went through this last week. I almost cried when I saw these sores on his bum. Took him to the doctors and they recommended the following:
1) 5-6 baths a day - mix the water with baking soda. Let him soak for 5-10 minutes while playing with toys. I was lucky if I could get 2-3 baths in but it helpedt.
2) Pat dry and let him air dry for as long as you can. He pooped and pee'd during these times but keep him in an area that did not have rugs.
3) Put A&D or Butt Paste on before the diaper.
After 3 days, the rash was 100% better. I really think the baths and being naked was the best remedy.
RyansProudMama,
You have received a lot of great responses. I wanted to add that my boys were allergic to an ingredient in Desitin and the white A&D. I had to use the old-fashioned yellow-orange A&D. Their rash actually got worse with the white stuff.
Good luck.

Sounds like he has a yeast infection going on on his behind! So, if it was my child, I would get some Shaklee Basic-H and put 1/4 of a teaspoon into a bathtub full of water and get in and have fun playing with the bubbles with my child (this always helped with the softening of the water and the healing process, and you should be able to find a Shaklee dealer close to you, or you can call Shaklee directly - their website: www.shaklee.com) - then, dry the child all over with a clean towel and let him run around for a little while with NO diaper on (if you are worried he will pee or poop on the carpet - keep him in the kitchen or bathroom with some toys to play with and supervise (about 10 minutes). Then, after you are sure he's dry on his bottom and he hasn't gotten anymore poop on his bottom rub Zinc Oxide ointment all over his entire bottom until it is completely white! He will need to be bathed like that between each diaper and reslathered - but, it shouldn't take more than a couple of days before he's healed or has made good progress in his healing. Keep his sugar intake to a very minimum. Corn and ham can also give some pretty nasty burns to a butt too! Good luck!
I'd go to the doc first off. My ped recommended a mix of Lotrimin (for yeast), bacitracin, and polysporin plus naked time. Would you consider cloth diapers? I've been doing this with my 3rd and NO rashes!!!
I use GroVia hybrid diapers, you'd need a "shell set" (ie. cloth at home, biodegradable disposable insert when out and about which are cheapest through Amazon Mom which offers 30% off). BumGenius Flips (which are a bit less expensive and have different cloth insert options, ie. organic cotton, stay-dry microfleece) are another popular hybrid. Both are available through www.nappyshoppe.com.
Poor little guy. For the diaper rash:
*Okay I say change his brand of diapers again.
*Have your mom change his diaper more often...every hour at least....have her feel his diaper more often too. My boy peed often and a lot so I was changing diapers every hour and sometimes every 30 mins if he had a full diaper.
*Try another brand of rash medicine.
*Try a different band of diaper again (I changed 3 times)
For teething:
*Give him infant Motrin for his teething (at this age most likely will be molars?)
I say changing more often will help some. I had to try different brands.
Ended up with Kirkland Costco brand and that helped.
What else does he eat that might make him constipated so you can eliminate that?
Do you breastfeed or is on milk?
Bordouxes Butt Paste!!!! It is the only way that my sons diaper rash to go away when he is in disposables. In cloth we use Gro Magic Stick
http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=291
I use this with cloth and it's gone!
Its all ablout Balmex - no joke - improvement sin one diaper change, and you can get a big tub of like 12 oz in the store that last 5 times longer than the tubes.
And reduce fruit intake if poop is runnier . ..
Hydrocortisone mixed with tinactin- the foot cream. An old pharmacist told me this trick a long time ago with my first. You will see relief in less than a day.
My mother used Mary Kay night creme, and said it cleared our rashes right up when nothing else worked. poor lil` guy!! :(
I didn't see your request earlier, and didn't read all the responses, but I got the best tip from a friend a few years back for when you don't want your kid running around without a diaper or he has to wear one if you're out and about--it works especially well for diahhrea. Clean the diaper area with a cotton ball and warm water. Pat dry or air dry. Use a cotton ball to put on Maalox--that's right, Maalox. Then putt triple paste on top of that. The Maalox calms down the acidity of the watery poop, calms the skin, also helps to create a barrier between the skin and the next poop. It worked fast!
change him to unbleached diapers(7th Generation) and Whole Foods wipes--they are the most soft, sensitive ones on the market....saved my 2 kids butts from any rash permanently.............
My son used to get this all the time. I found that by putting plain corn starch on him, within a day or two, the rash is completely gone.
I know i'm answering this late, and I haven't read all the responses. My son had horrible, terrible diaper rashes consistently til he was 3!
Try Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment with Oatmeal. They make one for babies, but the one for adults is cheaper and I think they have the exact same ingredients! They come in a box of packets. Soak for 20 minutes. Really soothing and safe. Also, I loved Boudreaux's Butt Paste (the dr. suggested this one!)
Good luck - I know how you feel!
The only thing that worked for us was the Desitin in the purple box, not the creamy kind. I put it on really thick and reapplied after every change. I also changed them as soon as they went.
So sorry for your baby. That's got to be painful!!
May have already heard this one but I used a spray bottle with some Mylanta liquid in it. Instead of wiping I would lay him on the changing table with one of those mattress protector sheets that you can get for adults and spray him down lightly wiping with some thick tissues. It would help to neutralized the acid and coat to protect for the next bowel movement.
And of course, airing the bottom out would really help if you can do it.
Hoping for a rash free booty soon.

I haven't had a chance to read all the responses, but my daughter just went through the worse diaper rash. It was itchy and blistery. Desitin wasn't working, so I tried lotrimin, but that wasn't strong enough. I finally went to the doctor and he prescribed something from the lotrimin family and it finally worked. I had to apply it 4x's a day. I alternated it with Desitin/Vaseline (blend them to get the best results), and it finally went away after a few weeks. Only to come back with a strange one that looked like a sun burn that peeled like a sun burn, but cleared up in a day or so with the Desitin/Vaseline combo.
I'd say if it doesn't clear up in a day or so go to your son's peditrician. A side note, we use cloth diapers and Seventh Generation disposables, and she still ended up with this horrible rash. We used the same with my other daughter and she never had anything like it, so it just depends on the kid.
Good luck. So sorry your baby is going through this.
I haven't had time to read the other responses, so I'm sorry if this is a broken record... My son went through something similar around 9mos, where he had a rash that wouldn't go away. I tried all sorts of diapers and creams. Went to the Dr and they said use Lotrimin 2x a day, and then also Hydrocortisone 2x a day... that cleared it up.... but once I stopped using them, it came right back! The only thing that worked for me? Cloth diapers. Within using 3 cloth diapers his bottom was clear. Now he is fine to use paper diapers,(we use Huggies sometimes) but he was in cloth for over a year. Now our daughter uses cloth and she rarely if ever has a red bottom. (usually it is from eating something new). Hope this helps!
Diaper creams don't work on my son. We had to use hyrdocortisone or lotramin (anti fungal). When both my son and daughter have horrible diaper rash we use a thick layer of hydrocortisone and then we put another layer of vaseline over. That usually works, the vaseline acts like an extra barrier.
Best of luck, we just finished dealing with this with my son. Poor babies.
The best diaper cream I've ever used is Triple Paste. It's expensive but it works. You can't buy it at grocery stores; you find it at CVS or walgreens.
(My daughter has a food allergy and if she eats something accidentally, shecwould get the worst, angry red and painful rash ever. Triple Paste is the only product I found that treated the rash and gave her relief.)
Hope the rash clears up soon!
for cloth diapers you can look on http://pinstripesandpolkadots.com/ They have just about everything for the cloth diaper momma. There are usually a lot of diaper boutiques almost everywhere that have show rooms so that you can go in and feel and look at the diapers before ordering, and some even keep them in stock.
So sorry to hear that your little man is going through this.
We've tried just washing the baby's bottom with every diaper change---we've tried having our babies walk around w/o a diaper for as long as you can --(hoping they do not poop or pee). We've tried Desitin a couple of times..and it seems to work for us.
If it's really too painful for him, you may just want to see the Dr..they may have to prescribe a topical ointment for him. Good luck.
Best cream ever:
Burts Bees Diaper Ointment.
My 2nd son and my neice both had extreme rashes to the point of open sores and Burts Bees is the only cream that worked. It's totally worth the $8 per tube.
My daughter has a tendency to get these really running poops and afterwards it is bright red and burning and so painful. When I asked my pediatrician he said it was akin to an "acid burn." For her it is worse when she is teething because of the copious amounts of salivia. He told me to put Maalox or Mylanta on the diaper area with cotton balls and let it dry. Then use some neosporin for any open sores. Finally Flanders Buttocks Ointment (I get it on Amazon.) Though a triple paste should work fine. For my daughter it is a miracle. What would be a rash that lasted for weeks, would now be gone in a day or two. I put it on at every diaper change to protect her diaper area.
