Diaper Rash - Washington, MO

My daughter has had a cold for almost a week now and has lost her appetite. The past two days shes had some troubles with her bowl movements which has caused a bad diaper rash. Ive tried vaseline and some buttox ointment; neither have really worked. Is there anything that will help the discomfort when she does go?

What can I do next?

From my experience, it can take some time for the diaper rash stuff to work. We have tried them all,and so far, the Buttpaste and the A&D original work the best. We use it on a regular basis now to prevent as well. Try to allow air time too. I use just a plain white cloth diaper for a few minutes at each changing. Also, be sue her bottom is completely dry before applying any ointment.
Good luck!

I have found that Resinol (http://www.resinol.com/index.htm) works really well. My sister told me about it and got me some for my daughter. You have to ask the pharmicist for it as it is not on the shelves.

J.,
When my daughter was that age, she had the same problem with her bowel movements. she would only go once every 5 days, which the doctor said was normal as long as her habits had not changed. But on the flip side, I took my grandmother's advice first. I boiled prunes to make natural prune juice. she loved it. apple juice works too. But the prune juice is natural and does not have all those chemicals that the products in the store do which can hurt a 16 month old's belly. Sometimes that did not work for my daughter, so I had to go to suppositories. her belly would empty faster than anything. I know it sounds horrible, but you can see your baby's face and know that she feels better, and you will too.

You have so many ideas so I will keep it short. Don't use wipes....all the chemicals will burn, instead use a warm wash cloth. I swear by Triple Paste which you can find at all stores. Lastly, keep her diaper loose so her skin can breath. Good luck.

Destin works the best out of all the products I have used, and trust me, I think I have tried most of them. My mother in law bought it while she was watching our daughter and the rash was gone almost overnight!

I used Paladin Ointment for my kids and now my grandson. It comes in a jar and can be purchased at any pharmacy, non-prescription, but you have to ask the pharmacist for it. It is very good and will clear it up in 1-2 days. Good luck and I hope she is feeling better soon.

I really like Diaperderm and have only found it at schnucks. But check with your doctor, when my son had "really bad diaper rash" it was a yeast infection and had to be treated with an antifungal ointment.

The best thing we were recommended was Lotramin, (antifungal cream)sounds strange, but it cleared it up in less than 24 hours. That's all I'll use now.

I have 3 children. My first never had any problems with diaper rash, but my other 2......they seemed to have more sensitive skin. It was pretty bad at times, sometimes it would crack and bleed and it seemed the more cream I put on it, the worse it got. I thought it would never go away. UNTIL......I was told about corn startch.......yes, the wonderful baking ingredient. It's cheap, you find it in your baking aisle at the store and I took that stuff and spread it on good....not just a sprinkle, I actually took a spoon and made sure I covered every area on their little butts and with-in a days time, after changing them often and pampering their bottoms with the corn startch, I could see a difference. Don't get the baby powder that has corn startch in it already, just get the baking stuff. When it's gone, then get the Johnson's brand if you want and sprinkle it on after every change. But for the really bad diaper rash, I swear by the corn startch. Try it! Good Luck!

My daughter has had the same thing off and on. I was told by our doctor to mix in equal parts- an antibiotic ointment (like neosporion) and a clortimazole cream (basically an antifungal cream). I used it and everything cleared up pretty quickly. I put it on about every other time I changed her diaper and used regular diaper resh cream the other times. It cleared up by the nest day.

just so you know...even though it is very unlikely your daughter has this...but it does happen...my daughter at about 16 months had a funky diaper rash...when i would change her diaper her rectum would be red and irritated looking plus there would be a sort of "cheesiness" around the area...anyways i finally took her to the dr. after this rash would not go away..thought maybe it was a yeast infection gone haywire or something...the nurse looked at me funny for bringing my daughter in for "diaper rash" but i told her that couldn't be what it was. anyways the dr. swabbed the hole and cultured it...turns out the little girl had a strep infection...yup same kind all the kids get in their throat...so my point was when all else fails and for some reason as a mom you always know when somethin' is up...get it checked even others think your "nuts" :P

What works for my baby when he gets a bad diaper rash, I sit him in a warm bath with baking soda, and dry pat his bottom and use a good amount of A&D ointment, within a couple of days of doing that the rash is gone, and once its gone and I see the least bit of redness appear I just put a thin layer of A&D ointment on his bottom at each diaper change and the redness is gone.

Not sure what you feed her but cut back on the acidic foods and drinks, my son was getting alot of diaper rashes and come to find out it was from the mandarian oranges I would give him.

Good Luck
Hope it helps

Hi J.
I was always searching for alternatives to the harsh chemicals in most diaper creams. We finally found "california baby's" calundula cream which always did the trick! Otherwise, do a google search for "natural remedies" diaper rash....you'll be surprised at how many options you come up with!

The best cream I've found (and I tried everything with one particularly bad rash) is Dr. ____'s (I can't remember the guy's name)- it comes in a tub with a screw-on lid, and I know they sell it at Walmart and probably walgreens, and Triple Paste is very similar. It's more expensive, but a little goes a long way (but I'd slather if the rash is bad), and works like magic (I think it's the lanolin in it). Make sure her bottom is good and dry after a diaper change (leave the diaper off a few minutes if at all possible), and then put tons of this on her. At night I even put Vaseline over it to keep it from rubbing off on the diaper. And don't wait a second to change poopy diapers- that's the real problem. Good luck, she'll get better!

I had the some problem with my 2 year old when she was an infant. I recommend calling the ped. Mine was able to prescribe something medicated that knocked the rash out in 2 days. I think most creams and ointment are preventative and do not do a great job clearing up really bad rashes

My pediatrician has always told me to use chlotromazole (not sure I spelled tht right), for my daughters diaper rashes. It works very well. Some diaper rashes are actually yeast infections. My daughter usually gets them after a bad poopy, even if I change her diaper right away. You can get it over the counter at walgreens or wherever and it is found in the foot fungi section. I think the name brand is lotrimin, but it is kind of expensive, so I get the off brand which is mentioned in the first sentence. It spreads thin so it lasts a long time. I highly recommend trying this. I noticed some ointments I used would burn my daughter - this one did not and I noticed her rash getting better right away. Good Luck and I hope your daughter feels better soon.

When my little one gets really bad diaper rashes, I rinse her with water after claeing her up with wipes...then use a hair dryer or just blow on her bottom until she is dry...I use baby powder with cornstarch, because desitin seemed to make it sting worse. I also would put her in the sink full of water and about a quarter cup of baking soda. Hope it gets better soon...but you may want to check with your doctor because it may be a yeast infection.

Try A&D ointment it works wonders and it's not expensive like some of the other creams. Hope she's feeling better soon.

Is she constipated? If so get that under control my daughter has hemroids from being constipated. The diaper rash may be yeast related from her being sick. Put a yeast cream on two times a day and still use your other creams the rest of the time. My doctor told me to use the same cream that I would use if I were to get a yeast infection. It clears up real quick. Call your doctor about the cream he/she would prefer you to try.
