My suggestion would be Triple Paste, but you said you've been trying that to no avail. Another suggestion from my baby sitter is to put some baking soda in the tub when she takes a bath. My son's diaper rash cleared up before I could try that, but she said it's a miracle. Maybe you could give that a whirl.

When my daughter had a diaper rash so bad that it blistered (ouch!), the pediatrician's office recommended mixing lotrimin AF with the Triple Paste. It worked great. Giving her some air time would probably help too. Good luck.

Hi K., It sounds like she is allergic to the antibiotic she was taking. The same thing happened to my son with a new antibiotic he was taking and his little bottom looked like the flesh became raw - well I think you know what I mean. We told the Pediatrician and we were told to stop the antibiotic immediately. Should contact your pediatrician and let him/her know about her rash. Hope she is much better now.

calendula ointment. works wonders. It is healing rather than barrier like most creams. Pharmicist at Edgewood reocommended it. really great. Got it at pharmacy over the counter or can try natural store.

It is most likely from the antibiotic. When you have to change her use cotton balls and warm water. Put on whatever rash cream you have. Also try to seeif she will eat yogurt.

K., my second and third boys had the same problem and it was hard with my seond son because I was trying alot of things and trying to get more information while he was crying in pain and so forth. Finally, got it under control and worked out for my third son. First of all, clean it good even if she cries in pain ,but try to do it quickly to get it down, let air at it and let it air dry.I put Desitin sinc e that was and is the only thing worked while other things did not work and did nothing to help them. Smother the back end with it. But make sure you clean her frequently because you want to keep it dry and cleared. Bath is good letting her get her back end clean and she may dhow it doesn't feel good but got to get it cleaned and let it air dry all the time and it will get under control. I heard from one woman whose children are adults now and she was told by a dr years ago to cook the yeast and apply it to her son's bottom and it worked like a charm. I have not tried it, but that is a home remedy. I feel for your child. I had a yeast infection my nipple because my one son had thrush and it hurts to have running water on them and I know the pain. have you introduce potty chair to her? Since it hurts she may like the idea to sit on potty and less rubbing from the diaper.

My son always gets a diaper rash when he takes an antibiotic. The doctor usually prescribes ointment for the rash. It clears the rash up quickly. Now whenever my son needs to take an antibiotic (which is rare). I ask for the perscription for the diaper rash cream right away.

My 18-month-old daughter recently experienced the same thing. She had been on antibiotics, developed diaper rash and her skin became so raw that it bled. It really helped to let her go without a diaper for an hour (or more if possible) so that her skin could stay really dry. I would usually bathe her, dry her off and let her sit on my lap on a towel.

My daughter's pediatrician recommended Balmex for diaper rash, which definitely did the trick. I applied it with every diaper change. I had been using Desitin, A&D and/or Boudreau's Butt Paste, but none of these seemed to help long term. I could see a difference with the Balmex almost immediately.

Mother of two amazing kids - a 9-year-old boy and 18-month-old girl. My husband and I have been married for almost 13 years.

Call your doctor to discuss it, but I'd try lotrimin because it could be a fungal infection - 2 or 3 times per day. Lotrimin can be a little irritating to the skin, so our doctor recommended we put it on in conjunction with hydrocortisone cream.

My 2 year old daughter has very sensitive skin. I try to change her frequently and use Balmex for her when a doaper rash does pop up. I have also given her a bath to help sooth her sore bottom. I also try not to make the diaper too tight so a little air can get in there. Keira loves being without a diaper but it is hard to keep a 2 year old in places where she won't make a mess with no diaper. :)

Antibiotics can cause yeast infections, even in babies. If the diaper rash is caused by yeast, you will need a prescription cream to clear it up, so please make an appointment with your doctor today. Over the counter diaper rash remedies will not clear up a yeast infection. I hope your little one will be healed up soon!

I am a mom of two boys. Ages 5 and 22 mos. This is what worked really well for me... Expose the bottom to air whenever possible. Apply petroleum jelly, like Vaseline (store name brand is also fine)to the area that has the diaper rash. Then liberally, shake on cornstarch. Many of the diaper rash ointments and creams have perfume/scent and that is what will cause the bottom to sting. The petroleum jelly acts as a barrier. The cornstarch will absorb the moisture. It is a little messy to clean up. Depending on how bad the rash is, I've had rashes clear up as quickly as a day. Hope this helps! : )

Some diaper rash needs their care, especially after antibiotics. If he needs to see you which I doubt make sure it can be seen.

My older daughter had the same thing at one time. Ask your ped for silvodene, it's used for burns and works wonders. Hope this helps.

Hi K., I've been in your shoes (3 year old twin boys and a 2 year old boy) and my doctor finally suggested I use athlete's foot creme - Lotrimin. It sounds really strange, I know, but it works! Use it twice a day, very little and rub it in and it will be gone in a day or two.

Now I keep it on hand and use it whenever we have a big issue like this! I tried EVERY other baby creme there was and nothing works! I actually find that vaseline is the best as it creates a buffer between the skin and the wet diaper - apply liberally!

Our pediatrician has a fail proof process with Diaper Rash:

Alternate each diaper change with the following 2 methods…

1. clean tush with Johnson's pink lotion and cotton rounds (wipes are too drying/irritating), then apply Lotrimin AF (yes, the jock itch cream) and then a layer of Balmex (not Desitin, since it contains CodLiverOil-you won't see that ingredient on the label, but it's in the physician's reference guide—and the bacteria thrive on that oil).

2. The next diaper change do the same EXCEPT for the Lotrimin AF substitute it with Hydrocortisone .5% (half a percent).
Then the next change go back to the Lotrimin AF, etc. You get the picture. It will clear up quickly and your daughter will feel much better.

This has worked beautifully on all 3 of my children!

You are right, this is definitely brought on by the antibiotics. Another great thing to help prevent it from happening or while she continues on the meds is Culturelle. It's a probiotic. When your daughter is prescribed antibiotics, get a box of Culturelle. It comes in a blister-pack so each capsule is individually sealed. Open up a capsule and dump the powder into her drink (sippy cup or bottle or cup). It is tasteless and it really helps regulate their system when they are taking the meds. If you are able to do this, you should most likely avoid the really bad painful type rash.

i myself love Balmex. When my daughter would have rashes I would slather it on and within a day it looked better if not totally gone. I even use it for myself if I get irritated

I have 4 kids and have gone through diaper rashes before. When my first was 1, and teething, she had a real bad rash that wouldn't go away after 2 weeks and trying everything I could buy. My mom swore by cornstarch. It did nothing, but keep it dry, it did not heal. Nothing worked but warm baths, air dry for at least 30 minutes, and plain old vaseline before diapering, and maybe a little baby powder to keep the vaseline from sticking to the diaper. It took about 2-3 days to see a difference, but she was no longer uncomfortable.
My third, my son, had minor rashes. After a warm bath, I tried Desitin and he screamed until I put him in for another bath and washed it off. I went immediately to vaseline and it worked again.
My last, now 2 1/2, had a rash when she was born, but this time I tried Aveeno Diaper Rash cream and I never had a problem with it at all. I do still keep vasaline on hand, just in case.

I agree with those who said it might be a yeast infection or fungal. It is worth a call into your ped. for advice.

I am so sorry for your troubles. My son gets a weird diaper rash about once a month during a time that his body simply says "enough-all bowels should be completely empty right away!!!" I have searched for a food that causes this, but my husband has a similar issue, of course no diaper rash for him (LOL) so I figure it is normal for him.
My sister in law swears by triple paste. I used it once and didn't see amazing results. But I have been using boudreaux's butt paste and it has been great. I only use it when he really has a diaper rash, and I don't hesitate to really slather it on. My son's rash gets so bad sometimes that he will get raised scaly patches and sometimes little pimples. I really dry them off with a dry towel and lather the cream on. Works best overnight sine there is so much "activity" during the day.

My son was lactose intolerant as an infant. He would get severe diaper rashes from 1 bowel movement. I used a 1% hydrocortisone cream with bacitracin over top and it gave him great comfort and helped get him through until finally diagnosed and changes in his diet. Might want to try it. Very inexpensive! Hope you are both feeling better soon. It worked with in a day to provide relief. Few days to clear it up!

If she was just on antibiotics and has that bad of a diaper rash, it is probably a yeast infection.

I ONLY use beaudreaux(spelling?) Butt Paste, I swear by it.

Call the Ped, and see if there is anything special if it is a yeast infection, if not, try the butt paste. You can get it anywhere now (drug store, grocery store, walmart/kmart).

Try a warm bath with baking soda. It dries out the rash and helps tremendously. Also, a good probiotic from the health food store will help straighten out her gut -- which is likely causing this after the antibiotic killed the good and bad bacteria. Good luck!

A friend gave me this trick, and it seemed to work really well...first, only clean the diaper area with water, no wipes. If it's sticky, you can use a soft cloth or some cotton balls, but other than that, I would just rinse in the bathroom sink. Pat dry lightly. It's definitely good to let her go without a diaper when you can. If you are going to diaper, once the area is dry, apply some Maalox (it's very runny, so you should use cotton balls for this). Once you have the area coated, put the triple paste ON TOP of the Maalox. The Maalox apparently provides a barrier between baby's skin and the poop. My friend got this advice from her pediatrician, and it has worked well anytime I've tried it--seemed to soothe the skin fast! Good luck.

If your daughter is on antibiotic it could be a yeast infection. My daughter and son both developed them at times. You can take her to the dr and they can give her a cream, otherwise we were told you could use the same medicine that they use on athletes foot. The other suggestions were mixing maalox with the diaper cream to soothe. Good luck!

It is probably yeast related as everyone has said. If you want something natural, as you requested, the brand "Motherlove" makes a diaper rash ointment. It can be found at most health food stores and online.

Also get a good children's probiotic and mix it with her milk. The probiotic can also be bought in the health food store....make sure it is refrigerated. The probiotics on the shelves at regular drug stores are useless.

You can also feed her plain, unsweetened yogurt. I like the idea of the smoothie with berries as suggested.

i would say it was most def the antibiotic, my daughter has gotton a horrible rash each time she has had one. Triple Paste is the best I have found so far, just make sure her skin is dry before applying it and keep it up every diaper change for awhile.

My niece has the same reaction to antibiotics. They give her diarrhea, which gives her a diaper rash. :-(

Here's what works for us: Just before bed, give your girl a warm bath. Wash her "nether regions" with a soap free cleanser (I use Cetaphil - the same thing I use on my face). The cleanser won't strip away any oils or moisture, but it cuts through the acid of anything that might be left on her.

After her bath, give her a generous dose of Desitin, topped with a little bit of cornstarch baby powder in her diaper.

We've never had a diaper rash that wasn't better in the morning after this routine. (Disclaimer - we've also never had a bleeding diaper rash...so if it's to that point, I'm not sure what to do.)

Wow I hate diaper rash! I have two ways that have worked for me. With my first I used cream that is made by badger that contains calendula a homeopathic remedy you can also give calendula pill that you can get at any where they homeopathic meds. I used baby powder to dry out the area with my second son because any ointment seemed to make it worse. hope one of them works for you.

Antibiotics? It's probably not diaper rash, but a yeast overgrowth. You need to get her on a diet to stop the yeast. NO SUGARS at all - they will only feed the yeast, and no white grains - they are digested like sugar by your body. NO fruit juice, either. Lots of probiotics - yogurt, kefir, even acidophilus pearls or tablets that you put in her drinks. But be sure the yogurt or kefir is unsweetened, you can make a sweet smoothie with plain yogurt and a low-glycemic fruit like berries. Finally, you can put grapfruit seed extract on the rash. Liquid is avialable, or you can mix a tablet with distilled water. It's a powerful anti-fungal, and totally non-toxic. Health food stores carry it, and acidophilus pearls. Good luck!

I'd say let her run without a diaper (even though that means lots of cleaning for you). Maybe you can have her in a somewhat confined area (play area) on a wood or tile floor, so it's easy to clean. I think that's the best thing so that nothing rubs against that area to irritate it even more. When my daughter got a really bad rash (she was very young then though), we put her to bed without a diaper. Under her, we placed a couple of those washable/fabric diapers (that our moms used to use on us), and then I'd change those through the night and wipe that area every couple of hours. It worked, she was a lot better on the next day. I'm sure that'd be harder to do with a 2 yr old since she probably moves a lot at night, but try it if nothing else works. Also, cornstarch does well, and I use Desitin and like it better than Triple Paste.

considering the antibiotics, its likely that its yeast. does the rash have defined edges, like you could draw a line around it? if so, thats probably what it is. and if not, it still could have yeast in it. try lotrimin af, its over the counter. use it a couple of times a day. the other times, use triple paste. and whether or not its yeast, dont use baby wipes at all, just plain water with a soft cloth or soft paper towel whenever possible. for the messy ones, you can use some mineral oil or vaseline or any other pure simple oil that you like, i like california baby calming diaper area spray. gently wipe it off as best you can, and dry very well. yeast thrives in moisture. bathe her with just a handful or 2 of baking soda in the water, no soaps or shampoos. dont rinse her butt, dry very very well before diapering. and if it is yeast, try to limit her sugar intake. yogurt with live cultures is good, but not with lots of sugar in it.

Give her a salt bath once or twice a day. Use 1/2 cup salt per 3 inches in the bathtub, or 1/2 cup epsom salts(soaking salts) per 4 inches (guesstimate it) and run the bath warm but not hot. Have her sit/play/lay/whatever in the tub for at least 10 minutes then pat dry with towel and let it air dry a bit.
I know it sounds a little home-remedy, but believe me, it works (and it great for her skin).

I think the best for girls is powder, Caldesence powder. It is either in a pink or blue bottle. You might have to ask for it at the pharmcy. It works really well because it keeps the area dry. Alot of the creams keep the area moist and just make it worse. Try it. It always works on my daughter.

I found that my son had his worst rashes in the 2- 2 1/2 year range, also. His doctor advised us to let him run around with the diaper off if we could(and yes, we had accidents) and was a huge fan of Desitin Creamy (the purple tube). I had all of the expensive creams--triple paste, boudreau's butt paste--and found that the Desitin Creamy (when slathered on) really worked! Good luck!

Hi K. - I would recommend any product with Calendula in it. I found one I really like at Whole Foods - it is put out by Welda. Any time I see even the slightest hint on a rash on my 2 year old, I put this on and it goes away instantly. It is also very soothing.

You might want to take her to the doctor to make sure she doesn't have a yeast infection. If she does, try a mixture of cortisone cream and antifungal (like Lotrimin)--apply a thin layer. Let that dry and then cover with a layer of Butt Paste. Once the yeast disappears, continue with the Butt Paste and it should hopefully clear up within a week or two. My daughter has been through this twice--when she teethes badly she gets diarrhea, which causes the rash. This is the course of action our doctor recommended, and it has worked both times.

This may sound a little strange but it really worked for my son when he had really horrible diaper rash and none of the creams were working; instead of using wipes try making a solution of skim milk (has to be skim) and warm water (about half and half) in a bowl and use a wash cloth to cleanse her after each diaper change. My son's pediatrician recommended this to me and even though it was a little annoying having to do this every time I changed him it actually worked and he was so relieved. Whatever you try I hope it works and your daughter can get some relief! Good luck...

It could be a yeast infection, which is common after taking antibiotics. Call your pediatrician and they can recommend an over-the counter lotion.

My daughter used to get teribble diaper rash, when we initially switched to milk her skin was allergic to the milk protiens that came out in her bowel movements and then she had the same reaction to certain foods. The rash was extremely irritated with open wounds we tried everything and nothig worked until my doctor prescribed Vusion ointment. It works almost immediatly and when an outbreak occurs with Vusion it is gone overnight. The ointment is not cheap and insurance does not cover, so ask your doctor for a co-pay card (as well as a few samples)and you will only be charged $10 per refill. Hope that helps.

She more than likely has a yeast fungal rash and needs a dr. Meanwhile give her yogurt and in the future always feed her yogurt when she has an antibiotic.

Have you tried probiotics , you can get some good ones for babies , i know whenever i take antibiotics i develop yeast infections if i dont take acidopholous .
also its not a bad thing to let her run free w/o a diaper , she will start to potty train herself , make sure you have the potty available for her and tell her she can use it .
sometimes food allergies can cause diaper rash also .

we used straight shea butter (with nothing else added -- you can get it at whole foods) on our daughter's diaper rash, it worked quickly. also fixed her excema.

Your baby girl might have a yeast infection since she was recently on antibiotics. Check with her doc again. Also letting her go without a diaper should help. Just be ready with the spot-bot ;-) to clean up any little mishaps. Hope this helps.

The best thing for diaper rash is simple - CORNSTARCH. It's cheap and natural. I had the same experience as you when my daughter was a baby; a horrible rash. It was my great-grandmother who suggested cornstarch and it worked like a charm. It's all I ever used on my 2 kids and neither ever experienced another bout with diaper rash.
The problem with pastes, as my pediatrician explained, is that a child's bottom must be completely dry when applied, or it can actually make the problem worse, as it seals in the miosture. Made sense to me.

Sounds like it is yeast related from the antibiotic. Try finding things that will treat that.

I also have a 2 yr girl that has the same problem. I have had great luck with Aquafor (made by eucerin). It is clear and just acts as a protectant. If I put it on her at night before bed the rash is usually 75% clear by the morning. I swear by it and a little goes a long way. It it doesnt clear up it is prob a yeast infection and her pediatrician can give a cream for it (I am blanking on the name of it but it starts with an "N"). Hope that helps!

Try Lotrimin (not sure of the spelling)...it's not for diaper rash, but my pediatrician has recommended it several times for all 4 of my kids when they had the same kind of rash following an antibiotic and it has worked in a day! Good luck.

I agree that letting as much fresh air on the rash as possible. As going without a diaper is not practical a lot of times, I have found that blowing warm air on the parts for five minutes with a hair dryer set on WARM (not hot) every time you change the diaper definitely helps a lot. Increase the number of diaper changes, wash the parts very gently if she can bear that, then blow dry, then put the cream/ointment on.
