Diaper Pail Recommendation

I need to replace my Diaper Champ (the rubber ring around one edge keeps coming off, making it impossible to use the pail). I'm deciding between the Diaper Dekor and the Diaper Genie. Does anyone have any opinion? Seems the drawback on both is that you need to buy special garbage bags for use for that specific pail (whereas with the Diaper Champ I could use any regular garbage bag)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I got a "standard" steel 13 gallon garbage can, with the step foot pedal. We'll see how that holds the smell. The practical side of me says it more "reusable" after the kids have grown than buying another diaper pail. Thanks for all the responses.

THe Diaper Dekor rates the highest with consumer reports, and I have been happy with mine.

Another thing to consider; if you breastfeed, their poop doesn't smell until you introduce solid food, so you can hold off on a pail until then if you so desire. :)

Oh, and one more thing; look into Elimination COmmunication (introduced to me here by Tara). My two month old pees and poops in a potty...I kid you not! :)

p.s I am really not as "crunchy" as I sound above..lol..not at all, actually..

Save your money!! I hated my diaper genie - not simple to use and you could smell the diapers... like another poster said, you could smell scented poop. Not so nice.

The simplest and easiest thing for me was to use a regular garbage can with a lid and put it outside. I kept mine right outside the door, so all I had to do was open the door and toss it in. I did place the dirty diapers in the little blue diaper sacks (or a grocery bag) and tied them up before tossing them in the garbage, and that was enough to keep the smell down. And with being outside, it didn't really matter as much. Nighttime diapers waited to go outside 'til the a.m.

Just my experience and humble opinion.

We use and always have used the diaper genie, with our first we were given an older model and it was ok but a pain to cut the plastic bags and empty however, with my second one we bought a newer one (think its the diaper genie II) and I absolutely am so happy with it as its so easy to use and really does keep the smell out of them room. They are really afforable, easy to install, and last a really long time and have no problems with it or finding the refils and they are very reasonable priced

I owned a Diaper Genie and quit using it. I found that all it did was mask the diaper odor so instead of smelling a dirty diaper you smelled a scented dirty diaper. I noticed the smell even more when the furnace would kick on in the winter. I ended up using the plastic sleeves my newspaper came in. I would tie it up and put it in my outside trash can.

If you still want a diaper pail, Diaper Genies can typically be found at thrift stores a dime a dozen.

I've never had a problem with the Diaper Genie II. I was told when I was pregnant that it was better than the original, but I don't remember why. Yes, it takes its own bags, and you have to keep an eye out for a good price. But I would say there is less waste than with a bigger bag. And one insert lasts a pretty long time.
There is a blade inside for cutting off the bag for disposal. It does work, but I keep scissors around to do the job (but I've always needed them in the nursery anyway--cutting tags, opening packages in plastic shells...)
Hope that helps.

I have a 6 year old and a 1 1/2 year old. I've always used the less expensive pail. They have them pretty much at most department stores. It's white and has a blue button and top that opens. You can use any bag with it which is what I like the most. You can even buy scented ones if you want. I think it's way more cost effective. Good luck and congrats!

I have two children. A two year old boy and a new born turning a month old this week. My opinion is based on how many times you discard diapers for two children and the capacity of diaper pails to hold a specific amount. That is, buy a big trash can- metal to avoid holding diapers' smell- with a pedal to lift the top lid. I have had the Dekor diaper pail for as long a my oldest son is and I do not like the fact that he likes picking inside it and does not keep soiled diapers' odor inside. Being a very picky person with cleanness I double bagged the soiled diapers in the Sassy diaper bags and I still smell the odor coming from the diaper pail. In addition, diaper pails use specific bags that are not sold every where. In short, if you want to make your life easier and be practical, purchase a big metal trash- strongly suggest two of them- can that can use standard bag purchasable in any grocery store. It is a matter of ease you life when having two not potty trained children and one of them is a new born that you will have to change a least 8 times before every meal. I am buying two metal big trash cans to have in the bathroom and in the room where I keep most of the time my two children. No more diaper pails that are a waist as the prior person said.
Good luck and congratulation on you second addition to your family.

Hi J.,
We have had our Diaper Genie II for over 2.5 years and we love it. Yes you have to buy the bags but they last a long time and even after the bag is printed black to indicate its getting short I keep using it until the bag is gone completely. I find them for $4.99 at BJ's. We now keep our pail outside off the kitchen but when it was inside I don't recall ever smelling diaper odors.

Good luck!

I do not like any of the diaper pails. I use good old fashioned plastic bags from the grocery store, target or walmart and throw the diapers out on a daily basis. I do not the smell of dirty diapers. Sorry I know i was no help it just seems those pails are more trouble than they are worth.

My only child is 6 now, so I'm not dealing with this right now, but I had to laugh when the other poster said that with the Diaper Genie, you smell scented dirty diapers! Sooooooo right. I did get it as a gift, but if you really stop and think about it, what's the point? Another piece of gear! Just drop solids in the toilet, flush and wrap the diapers in plastic store bags and put in your garbage. If your family is anything like mine, we empty our kitchen can at least every other day usually every day. Or better yet...designate a different, lidded can in the garage or outside.

We absolutely love the diaper dekor. I think I've ordered the refills at diapers.com as well as Babys R Us. Like the previous poster said, the refills can be hard to find so I tend to stock up when I buy them. But the pail really does a great job of killing any stink and is very easy to use, unlike the Diaper Genie.

Hi J.,

Go generic!! You can use any type of trash bag you want - even those plastic ones from the grocery store work fine. Plus, the clamp at the top closes so tightly that you do not even need to buy batteries for the fan that is supposed to help with any possible smell.

We had the trash can right next to our bed - easy changing at night - and never smelled a thing.

The Diaper Genie and Diaper Genie II are a pain to use - you have to flip over the can and pull the bag out of the bottom, and it only holds about 10 - 20 diapers depending on the size of the diaper. You end up changing the bag almost everyday and the bags are expensive, well, expensive because you go through them so fast.

Good luck,
L.

We use Diaper Dekor Plus and love it. You do have to buy the refills and they can be hard to find- Babies R Us and USA Baby carry them in the store. Target has the refills online only. However, the special bags make it super easy to use. Each refill lasts us about 2 months, though that amount is decreasing as the diapers get larger and they come 2 to a package. The refills are easy to put in and the pail comes with one already installed. I like that it is hands free (as long as the diaper is heavy enough to open the trap door inside).
