Anyone know of a good diaper pail that ACTUALLY helps with odor? Our pail didn't snell back during the early days of breastfed diapers and formula. Now that my son is eating baby food and real food ... look out!!
Or any good tips on how to help keep the pail smelling fresh(er).
thanks

I don't know of a diaper pail. But once I stumbled upon some Sassy brand bags for diapers at Target and they were really cheap and had a strong baby powder scent to them. They worked better than anything else ever has and we were able to put a diaper into one of those and throw them straight into the trash and not smell a thing. The only problem is that I can't find them anywhere anymore:(

Which diaper pail do you have? I like the Diaper Champ because you don't have to buy the pricey refills like the Genie. I dump baking soda in the bottom and haven't had any problems yet.

I have the NEAT diaper pail and love it. I don't think they sell it anymore because it is getting harder to find the refills. Safety first makes air freshner "coins" for diaper pails. You just drop one in when it starts to smell and it works great.

some people say diaper genies are good for odor control, but the refill bags are expensive. i have a diaper champ and it can get pretty stinky sometimes. so i make sure to empty it at least once a week and if it's a really gross poopy diaper, i just put it in a walmart bag and through it out. i put a car air freshener inside of the container to help mask the smell and when i change the bag i spray the inside of the container and all the surfaces that the diapers touch with lysol disinfectant spray...it really helps to keep the smell at bay.

I never did actually find one that worked, BUT I did find a solution. Walmart sells these little bage made for traveling. They are just big enough for one diaper. If you buy those and put your stinky ones in that bag before you put them in the pail, you will be AMAZED at how odor free your changing area is! You can find those bags in the baby section in with the pacifiers and such. They arent very expensive, I tink $3 for a package of 50.

We started putting poopy diapers in a plastic grocery bag or ziploc and throwing it away in the kitchen. The smell doesn't travel as fast as that garbage does! The kitchen trash always fills quick and gets put out. We only put peed diapers in the pail in Camo's room.

Once they start eating foods, those poops get pretty pungent!

We have the diaper champ and we just lyesol the whole thing at every change. We had one incident before we were doing this when it got really bad. We just washed it with bleach then started this routine and haven't had any issues since. It is in his room and never smells.

We throw the smelly diapers into a plastic bag as soon as we "get them" (haha) and put them into the garage. If that is not possible using lysol would be another option but be careful what you spray it on. Dont get it on toys....

In addition to this, when we did use a diaper pail, we DID NOT BUY THE REFILLS AS THEY ARE TOO EXPENSIVE but we did use plastic (cheap) garbage bags. It works just as well at such a lower cost!!

Diaper pails are a waste of money. You have to empty them every 2-3 days or they stink (it's in the directions of the ones we looked at). For the past 4 years, we've just used a normal trash can. Wet diapers go right in, wrap up in itself and close with tabs to help with the slight odor. For poopy ones, we just put it into a small plastic bag like a grocery bag, tie it shut, and put into trash can. We empty the trash can every 2-3 days and never have an odor issue. If we're changing diapers downstairs (which happens most often) instead of the toddler's room, we just put the diapers in the kitchen trash. That gets taken out almost everyday anyways.

Diaper Genie works GREAT for us. It does stink a little when you open it but only for a few seconds and we LOVE ours.

The pail gets stinky too quick (which if you think about it...if you had a load of poopy diapers in you, you'd smell after awhile!) Plus, buying the special bags for it gets expensive after awhile. Since I always had a ton of plastic grocery bags on hand, I'd tie up stinky diapers in one (or two) of those and toss it in the kitchen trash. Which ever mom said that the smell doesn't travel as fast as the kitchen trash does had it right on the nose!

Something like the diaper genie would be good. I've tried many diaper pails and that was the best as it seals each diaper...but it's kind of a pain in the but. The easiest way for me was just tie it up in a grocery bag (having kids and the number of times you have to go to the store, you should have an ample supply) and take it outside to the trash as soon as you get him changed.

My husband sprinkles some cat litter at the bottom of the pail and then sticks in the diaper bag ... you will need to change it periodically. Good luck!

Hello H.!

I swear by the Diaper Champ. The great thing about the Diaper Champ is it has been great with odor AND it uses regular trash bags. Our daycare provider (who has provided daycare for over 15 years) used it and our current preschool uses them too.

We use a regular small trash can with a snap shut lid. I use these little scented bags you can buy at wal-mart, and always pre-bag the poop. A newspaper bag is just the right size to drop in and tie it up. Also, always keep baking soda in the bottom of the can and change monthly. I take the bag out once a week, on trash day, and I never have an odor, the pail is actually in our living room and you would never know.
